Bush’s butchering of Scalia’s first name reminds me of Nixon famously referring to William Rehnquist as “Renchburg” before appointing him to the Supreme Court. I think at one point Nixon called him “that clown Renchburg” because of Rehnquist’s poor taste in suits.
Now’s as good a time as any to mention an interesting article by Jeffrey Rosen, in which he deconstructs Rehnquist’s Supreme Court career and argues, “liberals may come to regard Rehnquist as one of the most successful chief justices of the century.” Not that I necessarily agree with all of it, but it’s a very thoughtful contrarian essay.
