I’m sure many of you got this email. John Bolton is an enemy of all that is good, decent, and just. His nomination to be Ambassador to the United Nations is an insult to the entire world.
It is another clear example that Bush is a divider and not an uniter. He simply refuses to nominate anyone to any high-profile office that is not hated by the left, and feared by our allies.
I join Senator Kerry, in opposing Bolton for anything other than jailtime. Tell Lincoln Chafee what you think.
The Senate Committee on Foreign Relations – and, in particular, Senator Lincoln Chafee – have a big decision to make this week.
I’ve made my decision. I will vigorously oppose the nomination of John Bolton as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.
Have you ever noticed that in the Bush Administration, the only way to get a job promotion is to bungle our national security? As under secretary of state for arms control and international security for the past four years, Mr. Bolton has achieved little. In fact, we secured more nuclear materials in the two years before September 11th than in the two years after. North Korea and Iran are now burgeoning nuclear states. This record earned John Bolton a nomination to the UN?
How can we believe this nomination makes any sense at all?
We can’t believe it.
But, unless Senator Lincoln Chafee puts principle over party, the inexplicable John Bolton nomination will squeak through the Foreign Relations Committee on a party line vote.
We have to do everything we can to make sure that doesn’t happen.
That’s why, in addition to being vocal about my own opposition to Senator Bolton, I am organizing johnkerry.com activists in Rhode Island to contact Senator Chafee, and I am running online ads in the Rhode Island media.
See the ad for yourself.

…Sincerely,
John Kerry
I didn’t get it. Here’s the link to sign the petition to be displayed in USAToday.
Duh. You had the link up there. I missed it.
BTW, CNN is focusing on some hostage situation with a gunman and the vote for the new pope. That’s far more important than Bolton.
Hah. At first I read that as: “There is a lunatic holding the council of cardinals hostage and demanding they pick his choice for pope.”
But I doubt that is what you meant. Should I turn on CNN?
That’s funny … i deserve that for typing excitedly. You might turn it on now. They’re talking about Tom Delay. But hopefully, they’ll be back to the hostage story (the hostages are a woman and a baby) or the man with the suspicious suitcases near the Capitol building. Let’s see if they cover Bolton.
.
In an unusual blunt remark on topic, Dutch FM Bernard Bot [translates to “blunt”] in interview by Dutch NRC newspaper, remarked that for US Congress to go ahead and confirm John Bolton as US ambassador to UN would be “unwise”. FM Bot made his remark to reporter on his last day of his visit to Japan on his travel to China. The question put to him was whether FM Bot would welcome the confirmation of Undersecretary of State and “hawk” Bolton.
FM Bot said: “No. I regard it as an unwise appointment, one I do not understand.”
Bot considers the nomination of Bolton, a criticus of the UN for many years, as a sign that is not positive. “Surely during a phase of reform at the UN, the support from America is necessary to get the UN proposals confirmed,” according to Bernard Bot.

The very end of Kerry’s e-mail message was left off in this post, but I think it bears a great deal of attention:
Perhaps I’m missing some nuance in Senate language, but to me that sure sounds like he’s preparing for a filibuster. I suspect that no one here would raise an objection to that prospect.
