SurveyUSA asked 548 registered voters in the 22nd congressional district several questions about the embattled republican’s performance.
In general, do you approve or disapprove of the job Tom DeLay is doing as Congressman?
51 percent disapproved
42 percent approved
7 percent were not sure
What letter grade would you give Tom DeLay for his job as congressman? An A, B, C, D, or an F?
A: 23 percent
B: 19 percent
C: 18 percent
D: 16 percent
F: 22 percent
Not Sure: 1 percent
Based on what you know right now, do you think Tom DeLay should remain in his position as House Majority Leader, he should resign as House Majority Leader but remain a member of Congress, or do you think he should completely resign from Congress?
39 percent: Remain House Majority Leader
21 percent: Resign Leadership
36 percent: Resign From Congress
4 percent: Not Sure
The poll had a margin of error of 4.3 percent, pollsters said.
“What I see is the people who have always been opposed to him, democrats and those that have been opposed to him, they are still opposed to him and they are more vocal,” said Eric Thode, with the Fort Bend County Republican Party.
Thode said DeLay still has strong support from republicans in his district, but believes the Local 2 poll did not represent enough Republicans.
Democrats said the Local 2 poll showed DeLay is vulnerable at the ballot box.
DeLay has faced ethics questions about money used to pay for some foreign trips, political fundraising for Texas elections and his ties to a lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
DeLay has denied wrongdoing and has not been charged with violating any law.
39% of DeLay’s district think he should stay as Majority Leader, maintaining a leadership position in what one would have to assume is their party. (How many are Democrats, one wonders….)
42% give Tammany Tom an A or a B grade as their representative in Congress.
This shows the depth of the Democrats’ problem in winning elections. It’s that same 40% of the population we’ve seen excuse Abu Ghraib, believe that Saddam was behind 9/11, and aver that Bush’s tax cuts will–like the tooth fairy–leave presents under their pillows. They believe that good ole boy Tom is really a fine sorta fella, and we should leave him in up there in Washington. Them mean old liberals are beatin’ up on our boy Tom, and we can’t abandon him in his hour of need. Why, it wouldn’t be the Christian thing to do….
Words fail. Where is Mark Twain when we need him most?
Hey Double Dee! His polls should be at zero. But those numbers are not pretty if you’re a wingnut.
Just like Bush, who doesn’t govern based on polls, they don’t pay attention to the bad news. Bush would apparently rather govern based on the greed and self-interest of the robber baron class than consult the will of the people (surprise….). And DeLay similarly has his faith to keep him sanctimonious.
Faith, in his case, being not only the evidence of things unseen, but the evidence of things untrue.
um, yeah, I felt that way, too. Sorry to rain on the happy frog parade, BooMan. This moron still has a plurality in the most favorable categories after being battered around for the last month. What does he have to do, get caught raping babies??
… Who famously opined (pre-incarceration) that the good people of Louisiana would never turn him out of office unless he were “caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy.”
Tammany Tom probably feels the same way. That charming mix of hubris and sociopathy tends to produce similar delusions in similar minds.
He does not have a plurality in the most favorable categories. He is maxed at 42%. He is maxed at 42% in both categories. Bigger pluralities think he sucks.
And a majority think he should either resign from Congress or from the leadership.
oh BooMan, BooMan, BooMan…ever the optimist.
A: 23 percent <—Plurality
B: 19 percent
C: 18 percent
D: 16 percent
F: 22 percent
Not Sure: 1 percent
The highest rating, “A” is a plurality among the choices. The two highest ratings combined, “A” and “B,” are a plurality over “D” and “F.” (C can go either way, as it’s right in the middle.)
39 percent: Remain House Majority Leader <—Plurality
21 percent: Resign Leadership
36 percent: Resign From Congress
4 percent: Not Sure
Again, “Remain House Majority Leader” has a plurality among the choices. The only bright spot here is that, combined, a majority want him to resign something.
You are such a glass half empty man.
You and I both know that a ‘C’ grade is a lousy grade. People don’t reelect people they give a ‘C’ too.
And 57% of the people think he should resign ‘something’.
C’mon. Look at the bright side.
Texas has killer bees.
and these Killer Bees were my political heroes. Lloyd still is one. I even used to have a T-shirt that said, “I’d rather be a killer bee than a hobby horse.” (You’ll have to read the link to get it.)
Note that the article (May 2003) says:
Well, guess what? DeLay did succeed in dismantling Doggett’s district (oh, the righteous woe that he is no longer my rep – instead I’m stuck with the reprehensible, vile, evil scumbag Lamar Smith).
Now if you’re not from around here, you may not appreciate that Lloyd is a diehard socially liberal, progressive, honest, honest-to-god public servant. We liberals call him “Saint Lloyd.” And what he has most of is courage, grit, and spine. DeLay hates his guts. He was the Rep. the bugman most wanted to get rid of with his criminal redistricting.
And here are the vote totals as of Nov 4 2004:
Texas Congressional District 25
Percent Reporting: 100
Last Update:11/4/2004 11:37:56 AM
Lloyd Doggett (D) - Winner 67%
Rebecca Klein (R) 31%
Never, ever say that liberals can’t win in red states. Never, ever say that Democrats have to wimp out, tone down their liberalism, and kowtow to fundies to win. DeLay split Austin into three pieces specifically to destroy Lloyd’s liberal base here. His district is now much more conservative than it was. But look at those vote totals. Spine doesn’t just get sainthood. Spine wins elections.
