The Diameter of the Bomb
by Yehuda Amichai
The diameter of the bomb was thirty centimeters
and the diameter of its effective range about seven meters,
with four dead and eleven wounded.
And around these, in a larger circle
of pain and time, two hospitals are scattered
and one graveyard. But the young woman
who was buried in the city she came from,
at a distance of more than a hundred kilometers,
enlarges the circle considerably,
and the solitary man mourning her death
at the distant shores of a country far across the sea
includes the entire world in the circle.
And I won’t even mention the crying of orphans
that reaches up to the throne of God and
beyond, making
a circle with no end and no God.
The news didn’t show any of your pictures again today. All I noticed was yet again another story about the “runaway bride” (some radio station has offered her a job) lovely…
You know… this weekend – what with Mother’s Day and all of us really considering that it was a day of anti-war and PEACE (not Hallmark) we all here at my house are getting fed up with this BS administration and the BS mentality of it’s citizens.
We even, as a family, talked of moving to Costa Rica for a few years. I shouldn’t feel embarrassed to be an American, but I am. I’m embarrassed and angry and frustrated.
My brother asked if I was “running away” – No. I just would like for my children to actually live how they actually believe. Equality, Environment and Education. In Costa Rica they call it “Pura Vida” the Pure Life. I dunno’ – just some more food for thought for my confused mind.
“Gots” some thinking to do I guess. We’re moving anyways… our choices just expanded.
I again want to thank you so much for your work. It’s been a cause of much conversation and critical thinking around my house.
They speak English and are industrialized – I don’t know how much more change I could handle than moving to the exact opposite side of the world.
Yes, it’s sad when it gets to this point.
Costa Rica is beautiful. Evironmentally aware, too. As is NZ.
Get this… we just learned that Intel (the type of work my husband does and one of the companies he’s been sending resumes too) has a manufacturing plant there. This could get eeentureeesting.
My daughter got very mad when she caught Bush shaking his butt in Georgia this morning.
