I just happened to see the number 967 User Id and realized we are climbing up the ladder to 1000 users rather fast now and looks like we could reach that number by this weekend. Thanks to the ACLU diaries by susanhu, I think a lot of new members are coming this way.
To new members we like to hear about “you” so please tell us. Here is the link to the most recent diary, in this series. Welcome to this site and hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – They fed them well. The Pakistani tribesmen slaughtered a sheep in honor of their guests, Arabs and Chinese Muslims famished from fleeing U.S. bombing in the Afghan mountains. But their hosts had ulterior motives: to sell them to the Americans, said the men who are now prisoners at Guantanamo Bay.
Bounties ranged from $3,000 to $25,000, the detainees testified during military tribunals, according to transcripts the U.S. government gave The Associated Press to comply with a Freedom of Information lawsuit.
A former
CIAintelligence officer who helped lead the search for
Osama bin Laden told AP the accounts sounded legitimate because U.S. allies regularly got money to help catch Taliban and al-Qaida fighters. Gary Schroen said he took a suitcase of $3 million in cash into
Afghanistan himself to help supply and win over warlords to fight for U.S. Special Forces.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if we paid rewards,” said Schroen, who retired after 32 years in the CIA soon after the fall of Kabul in late 2001. He recently published the book “First In: An Insider’s Account of How the CIA Spearheaded the War on Terror in Afghanistan.”
Schroen said Afghan warlords like Gen. Rashid Dostum were among those who received bundles of notes. “It may be that we were giving rewards to people like Dostum because his guys were capturing a lot of Taliban and al-Qaida,” he said.
Pakistan has handed hundreds of suspects to the Americans, but Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed told the AP, “No one has taken any money.”
I just received this info from google alert for John Bolton.

U.S. firms said to be named in withheld Bolton documents
By Douglas Jehl The New York Times
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 1, 2005
WASHINGTON Some of the information that the White House has refused to provide to Congress for its review of the nomination of John Bolton includes the names of American companies mentioned in intelligence reports on commerce with China and other countries covered by export restrictions, say government officials who have been briefed on the documents.
It had previously been reported only that the White House was refusing to hand over the names of 19 American persons mentioned in 10 intelligence reports by the National Security Agency.
The fact that the documents also included the names of American companies, and that the subject had to do with possible violations of American export restrictions, provides a new clue as to why the White House might be rebuffing the congressional requests.
The names of the Americans and the companies remain highly classified, but they were provided to Bolton by the National Security Agency in response to special requests he made as under secretary of state for arms control. The Democrats who forced the postponement last week of a vote on Bolton’s nomination as ambassador to the United Nations argued that the Senate should insist on access to the same information that was provided to Bolton.
But the White House has said that Congress has “all the information it needs” to decide on Bolton’s nomination, and at his news conference on Tuesday, President George W. Bush dismissed the document request as “just another stall tactic by his opponents in Congress.”
The administration has allowed the top Republican and Democrat on the Senate intelligence committee to review copies of the 10 intelligence reports, based on conversations intercepted by the National Security Agency, about which Bolton requested the additional information. But the names of American people and companies had been deleted from those reports, and the administration has refused to provide Senate leaders with the names, even though they were obtained by Bolton.
The government officials who described the intelligence reports declined to speak for the record, citing the classified nature of the documents and the extraordinary political sensitivity surrounding them. They would not say what countries other than China might have been the subject of the reports, but noted that Bolton’s responsibilities also included monitoring efforts to prevent Iran, Libya and other countries from acquiring dangerous weapons.

i’ve been hanging at dKos for a while now (only recently registered, though). I saw the diary there about SusanHu’ burden and came over for a look.
Unfortunately, i’m pretty stacked up with my own work but i did some poking around for the abbreviations. I hope to grab a share of the docs themselves shortly.
I noticed that SusanHu and Oui were discussing the abbreviations work and suggesting it be gathered together as a diary. I’d be happy to sort that out. I don’t know if someone else has started on that but i’ll proceed anyway.
Oh yeah – about me: programmer, researcher, graphic ‘technician’, map illustrator, lover, dreamer, smartass.
I live in lovely Old Montreal, missing the trees cut down last year for a condo across the way. But my windows are nicer than theirs (they open).
linux, database, map, website questions welcomed.

Glad to see you here on this site and finally someone besides me made a comment on this diary.
I think you will like this site, we are very friendly and all feel very much a part of Booman Trib.
We love our international friends here, which you would be since you are from Montreal. It would be nice if you would post some pics. from your area.
I live in Socal, Orange Country to be exact.
I am sure Susan will be very happy with your help on the ACLU project she is working on.
hi yourself.
I’m currently between digital cameras ATM but will post something sometime. Its lame that i’ve got very decent SLR and scanner within 5 ft of me and i’m dragging my feet on getting some film. What would my photog prof think?
I’ve got some abbreviation notes to diary; i’m just wandering around to see if someone else has already started one.
To be exact – Orange County, or Orange Country? Whichever; sounds sunshiney.
That would be Orange County, Ca. or the OC as in the TV show. It used to be orange country, when the county was filled with orange groves which are now mostly all gone. In their place homes……Used to be a lot of farms, they are gone also.
Landslides today near here in Laguna Beach, 18 homes gone, 35 danger, 350 evacuated. Result of record rainfall and building homes on cliffs in slide area.

As you might infer from my username, I live in Kansas. I am a student of political science at the University of Kansas located in Lawrence. While Kansas is solidly republican, Lawrence is solidly democratic. We voted 60-40 for John Kerry and were the only county in the state to vote against the gay marriage amendment.
I run The Anti Sam Brownback Blog in my spare time. For my real job I work as a photographer at an art museum and volunteer for various progressive causes and campaigns.
I came over to Booman Tribune for the Gitmo information. I have been a member of DailyKos for a while… I guess sometime in March 2004. I participate at the Next Hurrah every once in a while, and I enjoy the less hectic pace of smaller blogs such as this one.
Glad to see you on this site. I recall I checked out your blog when you made a comment on my previous diary and I liked it very much.. We don’t have too many midwesterners here, but I do believe ‘ghostdancer’ lives in Kansas and he is a frequent poster.
It’s good to hear there is a Dem. county in a red state and that must make it easier for you. I live in a red county myself in Cal. and have Republicans in my family. So far only two of us are Dems.
Yes we are less hectic than DK and much more like a big family that seems to get along pretty darn good.
I hope you will become a frequent poster, we need more commenting.
