Oh god. My head hurts. “Republican Rep. Katherine Harris, who as Florida’s secretary of state was both praised and vilified for her part in the 2000 presidential recount, said Tuesday she will run for the Senate next year against Democratic incumbent Bill Nelson [campaign site!] …
“‘Humbled by the task ahead but knowing in my heart that one of the greatest honors in life is having a chance to make a difference in the lives of others, I am confident I can accomplish more for the people of Florida, and experience reminds me I’ve always done best when I’ve started out as the underdog,’ Harris said.” (W)Retch. but knowing in my heart that one of the greatest honors in life is having a chance to make a difference in the lives of others
Just think of the “difference” she’s made in people’s lives! All those dead soldiers, dead Iraqis, dead trees, dead women in Africa. The mind boggles. Ms. Harris, you don’t need to run for anything else. Your impact in Bush debacle 2000 will leave behind a lifetime legacy. You go, girl! That’s right, you just go now. Away. Permanently.
If she wins, we have proof of election fraud.
Computers should come with barf bags.
But Nelson’s pretty strong in Fla., isn’t he?
I hope he’s strong enough to mop up the floor with her…
Where is that video of her canoodling with another GOP rep., the good-looking one who is married and has a million children?
UGH! I think it was Flake from here in Az. I could be wrong though.
My mistake, it was Rick Renzi.
That was my first thought, too! Someone ought to get that clip and put it in a tv ad with a simple voice-over describing who the guy is, how long he’s been married, how many children he has. The implications don’t even need to be stated. Well, maybe, a black screen at the end with the words in white bold-face, “Does Katherine Harris share your values?”
He WAS strong in Fla, but that was before they started filling out the punchcards and writing the touchscreen code already.
I’d say she’s made PLENTY of difference for others with her role in the Florida vote theft of 2000, and rather than setting out to “accomplish more for the people of Florida”, she should atone for her past transgressions by retiring from public office. Immediately.
You only left one link out of your story:

THANK YOU! I will correct that error immediately!
Way to go, Florida. Why is it that Republicans run the worst members of their party? First, Alan Keyes in IL and now Harris?
I wouldn’t mind a little vacation in Florida next year–maybe it’s time to book a Nelson campaign vacation?
Everyone, if you haven’t realized it, this is a gift from heaven! Thank you, state GOP!!!
Do you know how everyone keeps worrying that a Hilary Clinton candidacy will energize the wingnuts to vote en masse against her? How Clinton supposedly revulses Republicans so much that turnout will increase by [whatever] percent?
Well, in Harris’ case, it’s actually TRUE. She is like Satan incarnate among Florida Democrats. But let’s look beyond that. First, she’s been a congresscritter for a whopping 2 terms. She has no record of achievement. Sure, she may be beloved by the hardcore wingnuts, but I would imagine the moderates don’t really feel much for her one way or the other. If anything, she’s something of a joke in this state.
Now compare this to Sen. Nelson, who though not spectacular, is extremely solid. He has a moderate record that will appeal to folks if the other choice is Harris. (He’s also well ahead of her in a recent Strategic Vision poll–46 to 39%.)
So this is a GREAT day for Bill Nelson! Okay, maybe not as great as running unopposed, but considering the GOP owns the state, they’re rolling out one of their worst candidates for this vital race.
If it truly ends up the way the Obama/Keyes race did in IL, then I will be happy. I suppose it’s a little too early to tell.
Whether or not Rove has anything to do with her campaign will also condition her success (or lack thereof) as a candidate.
well, I wouldn’t go so far as to compare her to Keyes, who may go down as one of the worst major-party candidates ever. But considering that Nelson was vulnerable and the Republican bench deep, this is a pretty good outcome. Most of the state’s big guns are aiming for the ’06 governor’s race.
I think I am going to puke now—get outta the way ,friends.
it probably means either touchscreens or barcode readers.
I can see it now…
“It looks like we’ve had a delay in the count. Flordia officals are saying that the vote counting may not be done until the morning…”
Of course she’s running.
Jeb’s gonna run in ’08. They’ll let McCain think he’s got a chance, just to string him along but it’s going to be a Rove-Jeb job. The targets are probably FL, PA, MI and OH.
Well several posters have alluded to nausea.

P.S. Many thanks for the spell check feature…
But her announcing for the Senate is good news.
First of all, it makes FL-13 an open seat–and we have two good candidates on the D side already: Jan Schneider, who ran against the Princess in 2002 and 2004, and Christine Jennings, who finished a close second to Schneider in the 2004 primary. The Sarasota Herald-Tribune even encouraged Schneider to try again if Harris opted to run for Senate, and that paper has backed her in the past. Provided next year’s primary doesn’t turn into a circular firing squad, I think the D’s can field a very good candidate next year for FL-13, and–just possibly–win the seat this time.
The Princess already has another Congressman, Mark Foley (another Florida west coaster), working on a Senate run, so it looks like she will have a contested primary. Watch it turn into who can go the farthest right the fastest, and who can go negative the fastest. Nelson, on the other hand, is uncontested on the D side, so he can sit and watch the fun–and save his campaign money.
Nelson should do well in the traditional strongholds of Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties. His political base is in Brevard County, very close to the all-important I-4 corridor, so he should do well there. I think north Florida is a lost cause, but he will get some votes in Jacksonville, where he was instrumental in keeping a carrier battle group at nearby NS Mayport, thus preserving a number of jobs.
It will be a fight, though, however the R side comes out, but we can win!

I certainly hope that one of her first official campaign acts will be to hire a new speech writer. This
is just about the most cringe-inducing, sanctimonious bit of twaddle it’s been my misfortune to read recently, from any politician.
I will refrain from the easy zap of equating her self-proclaimed underdog status with the dog description applied by others.
She’s nothing if not eloquent.
In late 2000, I wrote her an angry e-mail, telling her to get ready to put on Susan McDougal’s orange jumpsuit.
And she sent me an auto-reply thanking me for my support of her.
