I lived for 7 years just south of Albuquerque, and we had the most amazing night skys. More Stars than space between them.
One evening I could see four of Jupiter’s moons with only my binoculars. And one Lunar eclipse in particular, the moon looked so three-dimensional, and so huge, it was to hard not to believe that it wouldn’t fall out of the sky at just that moment.
Oh, and for almost two weeks I watched the Hale-Bopp comet just over my back yard, with it’s tail visably thrashing behind it.
Rats – I ran outside after seeing your post, only to remember that it is overcast here in Canberra. Has been raining on and off since Saturday after a near-record period of around 60 days with no rainfall. How high in the sky were the moon and Jupiter at 4.30pm? I guess Jupiter will stay visible for some time.
Were you around in about 1979 or 1980 when several of the planets where close together in the sky? Jupiter, Saturn and one other, if my memory still works.
Moonrise was about 3:00 yesterday, so it and Jupiter were aprox. an hour and a half above the horizon.
Our house is in a bit of a valley, so I had to wait both the Moon and Jupiter to get above the nearby hills and some low-lying clouds before I could see them.
Jupiter is, of course, frequently in the daytime sky – it was having the moon as a marker yesterday that made it so easy to spot. Plus, nice photo op.
AWESOME! I love to stargaze, Tucson is one of the few metropolitan areas that can still boast a full night sky of stars and planets. Thx for sharing.

Now that’s a view of the heavens!
Oh . . . Australia . . . right.
Beautiful shot.
Gaianne, if you stopped standing on your head in front of the computer, it would look the right way up… 🙂

What a great shot.
What equipment did you use? My scope is still in Montana and this makes me miss it very much.
Beautiful! Thanks.
