I am not terribly talented but I do get a lot of pleasure fron it. I got to the idea to do this diary because I didn’t want to just insert my photography into a painting thread. I have taken lots of different kinds of pictures but the only ones I ever tried to make money on were the head shots.
This is a friend of mine who was/is an actor/singer/dancer. One of the nicest people I have ever worked with. We met when his SO was directing a production of NINE that I was in. Jeff noticed I had two left feet and he helped me out. (Sometime I will tell you about how I utterly f’ed up on stage and became Michael and Jeff’s favorite party story.)
This next shot is the statue that faces the Viet Nam war memorial. I found it very moving.
This last was supposed to look like an old water color of some fruit. I didn’t quite get what I was looking for. But it is still one of my favorites.
And I can paint too. 😉
But as I’m about to hop in my bath, I’ll have to get back to this in a bit.
who’s the photographer – she just forgot to log me out & log in before posting.
I’ll make sure she fixes it after she’s back from her bath. 😉
Looking forward to seeing her work.
About two years ago I did some photos of the “Human/Nature” interface variety.
This is one of my favorites.
with? Camera and film?
A hanging glacier in Banff National Park, Canada.
Oops, stuffed that. Trying again.
This one is of Cradle Mountain, Tasmania, Australia.
I particularly like the glacier. Where was that taken? Are you traveling a lot to get all these shots?
The other two categories of pics I have concentrated on (besides my kids) are stage (cast pictures, publicity and lighting portfolio) and I have a thing for waterfalls.
I have not been doing much at all lately because it is so expensive. So I think, should I start up again it will be with specific shots in mind, with time of day and year taken into consideration and the whold shot planned down to the f-stop.
I often just shoot away and get nothing good at all.
Based on near 20 years of experience chasing wild photos all over the Americas… don’t plan too hard. The real world snickers at you when you do that because it really doesn’t CARE what you plan. Sure, have an Idea what you’re going after, but realize that you probably won’t come home with THAT shot. The natural perversity of the universe doth not allow for such.
Unless, like Weston or Adams, you’ve a lifestyle which allows you to sit and wait for three days for the wind to stop…
And you gotta look around, sometimes. Shots hide from you and they can get away unless you’re just right on the top of your game.
Teresa, to answer a few of your questions:
Most of my photos have been taken with a Nikon N2020, and Kodak 400asa film (I’ll use 200, or even 100 in harsh light conditions, but I find 400asa a good overall choice – for B&W, I prefer Tri-X).
Earlier this year I got a Nikon D70 (digital SLR), and have been using it almost exclusively since. I like it so much that I recently sold my Mamiya C33 medium format.
As for traveling, I’ve done a lot of road trips in the US and Canada over the last 20 years. I moved two years ago to Tasmania, after having fallen in love with a Tasmanian. Other places, like Bosque del Apache (below), NM, were reasonably close to one of the many places I lived in the US.
I have a Mamiya C3 TLR. It has great lenses, but it is not dependable obviously and I don’t have a flash for it. What I really need to do is have someone repair it.
The thing I hate about the idea of getting rid of it is the quality of the lenses.
I also have a Bronica s2 which occasionally screws up the exposure. I inherited these cameras and I love them. Again the lenses I have for this camera are superior to anything I have seen in the newer cameras. But I sure would love to know what it was like to use a medium format with dependable works.
PS, your landscapes are beautiful
That some of the best nature photography is the result of serendipity, but having the patience to wait for it is usually necessary as well.
Here’s a shot of Artic Terns, taken in Alaska (boy were they pissed – if I remember correctly, I got skratched on the neck for my troubles).
Nice shots… I’m definitely not a photographer, and actually began messing with digital imaging in part to compensate for my serious lack of talent with a camera, so I can’t offer any of the commentary you were hoping for – but I did want to say that they look good.
I took some fall pictures about 5 years ago that I fooled around with and made very bright and graphic.
It is fun – but not the same as having the ability to capture those things with an SLR and a darkroom. My bro-in-law is a photographer who fought against going digital for a long time – it seemed like an insult to the years of skill-building in technique and lighting to be able to just ‘monkey’ with an image later. He does do a lot of work with a digital camera now, and appreciates the convenience, but doesn’t mess with the images much – he doesn’t need to, as he can ‘get it right’ the first time.
And despite having access to a great teacher all these years – I’m still ‘there’s my thumb’ hopeless…. but at least I can edit out my thumb…
my first digital in the next couple of months — if I really get into the hobby I may upgrade to a digital SLR next year. I totally fell in love with an Olympus digital SLR at last year’s MacWorld SF, but can’t really justify the $$$$ for body and lenses until I know I’ll really use the stuff. Plus I might take a general photography class or two…I want to take a few more classes anyway, just to get academic pricing on the software I want for the new computer. 😉
I am having a hard time figuring out how to use a thumbnail.

Nice picture! Not that it needs any story, but what is the context? Where did you take it?
I just paint and draw..
= )
there’s me…
Mostly I do newswork after several years of nature and wildlife and landscape…
But unfortunately just at the moment I don’t have anything of mine under this name on the web and I’m not about to give out my secret identity since it’s more than my job and my contract are worth…
Lemme try to remember where I’ve got webspace lying around and I might be able to put a few things up…
= )
Hi Teresa, great thread. There are some great pics posted. I love photography and have dabbled for a long time. I used to paint but now focus on drawing ( I taught High School Art for 16 years. ) I love nature photography… usually come home from vacation with 30 scenery/nature pics to every “person” shot. I dabble in political cartooning and am still working on my caricatures. I’m still working on uploading images in a way that you can actually see the cartoons. I have some tree frog photos that I’m particularly proud of, will try to upload some to post.
PS.. In my last diary, I noticed that you know more about my local politics than I do… are you located in NE PA? Just curious.
It’s a beautiful part of the country though maybe not as beautiful as some other places.
Where did you teach?
I enjoy taking pictures of people as a hobby. The first one is from the MA State Convention back in May. The second one is from a pro-equality rally earlier this month.
Fingers crossed that my links work. 😛
is a good picture! = )
Yes, I do a lot of photographic stuff as part of my living. I have a D-60 digital SLR, a few filters, an old shoe flash and a lot of scenery to work from. This was taken looking out across my back yard. 🙂
Great compsition asterlil.
My horses were not usually as accommodating (or as clean).
I’m envy you having that view out your back yard.
I’m proud to say that I took my own cat pics, the ones that I presented in cheers and jeers. 🙂
But yes, having mountains in your back yard is definitely a creative stimulation. And they are my dues for living in Florida for 15 years.
Teresa, this is a great idea, to have a diary for pics. By the power invested in me as Justanotherblogger, I move that you should do this weekly or thereabouts.
