White House Webcast. And it was on C-SPAN.
Scott’s talking about the Supreme Court nomination process.
1st Q: President raised bar on if anyone would be dismissed re Plame …
If someone commits a crime won’t be working at WH. Important to learn all facts. No prejudge outcome.
HELEN! The president can’t call ROVE in and find out what in the hell is going on? It’s costing time and millions of dollars ….
She’s a spitfire.
rocks. Scott McClellan is a putz.
A pusillanimous putz.
That doesn’t look quite right. Obviously, I meant that as applying to McClellan, not to Helen Thomas, who is a national treasure.
That’ll larn me to be more careful with headlines, comment titles.
The dKos live thread is here, if anyone is interested. I’m at work and can’t watch the streaming stuff, so I have to get it where I can (Thanks Susan!!).
Can’t wait for the transcript…sounds like they’re still in full attack mode.
you call “full attack mode”. When McClellan refuses to answer questions about his own past statements the entire press corps should get up and walk out of the room.
at least they’re asking the questions now. That’s a first step.
Once they start getting the answers, then we’ll really be in business.
Also, remember that I’m getting the ‘biased’ retelling of the press briefing, since I can’t watch it 🙂
And haven’t we all seen that repeating something negative over and over is very effective? Even if there are no answers forthcoming, the constat replay of negatively connotated questions sinks in, doesn’t it? And it doesn’t give the R’s much to work with interms of positive spin sound bites either.
They need to keep Scotty’s feet to the fire. They need to keep asking questions until they start getting some honest-to-$DEITY answers.
They walk out, Scotty’s off the hook. Keep the pressure on and eventually something will break.
Why do they even bother holding these things? No questions get answered (and they usually don’t even get asked).
I’m beginning to feel that way too.
It wasn’t newsworthy, really. And it was very brief.
Keep the “stonewalling” in the public eye. It is often the repeated denial that finally shakes public confidence.
Oh, okay, Debra.
P.S. I’m always excited when I look at the clock and realize I haven’t missed the stupid thing.
I especially enjoyed the Stealer’s Wheel reference. Plenty of snark, but right on target. Read the whole piece at Ad Age:
You could see McClellan kind of losing it — emotionally falling down, unable to get up, thinking, “I hate this job more than life itself,” as his lips and tongue shaped and slithered themselves around sentences like “I appreciate the question” and “I think I’ve responded” and “I’m not going to get into commenting based on reports or anything of that nature.” Not to mention “You’ve heard my response” and “I already responded to these questions.”
For … an … interminable … mind-numbing … 30 … minutes.
C’mon! When the White House is engaging in a coverup, the press secretary’s supposed to put out more than that — engage in a little verbal jujitsu, kick up a breeze with the old bob-and-weave. Show a pulse, fat boy!
Of course, there’s a particular kind of tragic beauty to the spectacle of a guy like McClellan lying down on the job for all to see. A great American theatrical beauty of the Death of a Salesman sort. When a guy can no longer sell — worse, can’t even give away — exactly what he’s devoted his life to selling, it’s illuminating. All this time, the White House fog machine has been humming along nicely and journalists have mostly been wandering around aimlessly in the soupy air, bumping into one another and saying, “Oh, excuse me.” But then, one day, the mighty fog machine suddenly … stops. Grinds to a halt. Because of its own stripped gears. Somebody forgot to renew the service contract. (D’oh! Damn you, Rummy!) Voila: accidental transparency.
the story goes away. And that is EXACTLY what the Misadministration wants.
They have to keep the pressure on until they start getting some answers, one way or another.
I watched earlier today when once again Bush lied. His newest ‘twist” of saying anyone involved in “criminal” acts on his staff will be fired. Raising the bar for his buddy. The original statement was anyone proven to be a “leaker’. The typical change the story routine. And Scottie with his “I know what was previously stated, but that is being taken out of context’ crap. How can anyone in their right mind possibly believe the crap coming out of these lying sacks of you know what! UGH!
On the WhiteHouse site here.
[Posted to his website, thanks for the link!]
Please ask Matt Cooper if he sees any difference between 1) the way he was used by government officials such as Karl Rove to publish information that would discredit a critic of the Bush administration and 2) a reporter who is used by a whistleblower to expose corporate or government malfeasance.
Charlie never says, that I’ve heard, “And here’s a question from a viewer.” Maybe he incorporates them into his Qs.
I’ll be sure to watch. Last week, I wrote to them and asked if there’s a way I could receive their transcripts without having to pay. Hoping. No reply yet.
I doubt he reads his website, let alone asks the questions posted by viewers, it was just therapy LOL. But let me know, I will try to catch it, too! 🙂
