- This administration is in the deep throes of a scandal the size not seen since Nixon, in regards to Rove/Plame
- Bush is at his lowest ebb in trustworthy polls since taking office
- 75% of Americans don’t believe that the President and his admistratrion is cooperation with the Plame investigation of the 50% of Republicans don’t believe him
- Not only is the Rove affair bringing to light that Rove leaked the name of a CIA agent, it is also bring to light unsavory facts about the run up to war and the internal disputes of its legitimacy.
- The war that was suppose to be fought over there just hopped on the underground in London…
- let’s not forget that the majority of all Americans (Dems and Rep) want to keep Roe…
And with all of this going on the Democrats have decided that it would be more opportune to not throw Bush an anvil on his nominee for SCOTUS… (btw, I have this great piece of land I’d like to sell and some newly minted wooden nickles.)
Let me repeat this…at the lowest point of the entire Bush administration the Democratic leadership is pondering whether or not they should go great guns to protect Roe…
If Democrats can’t even decide on whether or not to protect Roe at the weakest moment ever of this administration… then there is no need to go any further… close the doors and turn off the lights.
I hereby announce that the Democratic Party is dead.
I doubt that it can be resusitated after not protecting the rights of over 50% of it’s base.
Women are kind of funny like that… what does the bible say… hell hath no fury…
To paraphrase Huey Lewis and the News:
I want a new party,
One that won’t make me sick…
I am so gawddamned tired of appeasement, of “selecting our battles,” of “waitng and seeing.” If anyone needs to know more about Roberts than the fact that Bush picked him, before opposing his nomination, then, they just haven’t been paying attention. But, we’re fucked because Reid has already declared him a “nice guy.” Anyone who offers criticism now is a meany picking on a “nice guy.” Debate has been stifled before it even begins — by our own party leadership!
They are purposely making the issue of pro-choice moot. What does it matter if Casey or Langevin is anti-choice… it will all be illegal now.
Makes me want to open up my wallet and give….. to any opposing party…
I think people are resigned to failure, and not without reason. Roberts seems to be your typical solidly right Republican, which makes him appear less extreme. There is no simple way to beat the Republicans on this, any course of action will require getting public opinion against Roberts, not merely the President. An all out assault right now would have an immunising affect, the public has to be awoken and convinced gradually. The chances of success are dismal, so the Dems must fight. Even a loss will make the party stronger, and there will be nothing to regret. Otherwise it is true, the party is dead, because quite literally there is no fight left in it.
What the Dems have to do is mentally link Roberts with all the fears that already exist surrounding the Bush admin. Or more specifically:
Characterise him as a slick lawyer, just another politician. Put every connection Roberts has to the Whitehouse and the GOP under a microscope. Emphasise Bush’s cronyism and partisanship, show how it is far above anything done before. Make this nominee seem to be nothing more than an arm of the Republican party. Demonstrate how this has caused problems before, how Bush is blind to his pal’s flaws. Play up anything against civil liberties, state rights; focus on support for government interference & corporations. (Do not conflate Roe with this, leave it as a separate, additional and distinct issue.) Get people to realise that Roberts isn’t there for reasons of suitability but as a calculated political move, towards a specific purpose. Market it as a breach of judicial independence, connect it with Rove.
And then women’s rights can be brought to the fore, to a greater effect. Have it happen leading up to the confirmation hearings, pointed but calm questions first and then emotional ones. The filibuster will be in the news constantly, so the fact that the Republicans have to break the rules in order to go nuclear needs to become a big issue.
There are only two realistic ways to win this, maintain the deal or destroy the nuclear option. If the public thinks Roberts is extreme or a merely another politician then the deal can hold, if the public thinks the Republicans are power mad then they will lose the resolve to use the nuclear option. But the problem is that it isn’t likely to work.
Just as Lieberman SAVED Frist’s butt from being fried with his filibuster bluff, he is throwing Bush a life saver…
The only person who wins is Bush…
Lieberman made the deal before he was even announce which is why the confusion and last minute changes…
Lieberman publically offered three names of who he thought would be acceptable one was Roberts. Then Lieberman squashed any debate by again by publically announcing that there was no need for a filibuster.
Lieberman has hikacked the Democratic PArty with his seven Senators..
ONCE AGAIN LIEBERMAN RUNS TO BUSH’S RESCUE
