Is there anything quite like ice cream when it’s hot? Right now, I’m eating Tillamook Marionberry with a bit of chocolate sauce. What’s your favorite flavor? What’s your favorite topping? POLL BELOW:

“Fossil Fuel”… try it, it’s freakin’ amazing…
plus, who doesn’t love Ben Cohen…?? 🙂
How could you forget the chocolate goodness mixed with almonds and marshmallows?!? It becomes staple food during the summer months for me.
I’m sorry … all of a sudden I couldn’t remember most flavors!
I do NOT like those cookie-doughie kinds…. that gushy soggy dough doesn’t do it.
I love Haagen Daus caramel ice cream bars but my trainer won’t let me have them. I am stuck right now with fat Free fudcicles but like them alot.
I was going to say rocky road, but cookies and cream and praline crunch are great too!
Oh, I can’t let this opportunity pass. Chico Marx (with faux Italian accent): Get your tutti fruity ice cream!
Mine is Starbuck’s anything, but especially Coffee Almond fudge, yummmmmmmm, java chip second
Ohhh … that does sound good. Anything with almonds in it!
I recently discovered Ben & Jerry’s Karamel Sutra, which is quite deliciously decadent. Vanilla, chocolate, and a gooey blop of caramel in the center.
But local is best. There’s an ice-cream maker in this area who makes ginger ice cream, with bits of fresh ginger in vanilla cream. And lemon ice, full of little chunks of lemon zest. And others. Expensive, and dangerously rich, but a wonderful treat.
Someone I knew once gave me some lavender ice cream. Divine. Alas, she has since died, and I think the recipe went with her.
i cant eat ice cream anymore
i tried last night and got violently ill
someone shoot me
my favorites were persian …one is a really rich custardy ice cream with saffron, rosewater, pistachios and lemon flavors…..and faloodeh…a rose water ice with a thin noodle in it that you pour sour cherry syrup and lemon juice over top.
philly has a lot of ice cream history (im working on founding the philadelphia food and agriculture museum)the first hand cranked ice cream freezer was invented by a woman who lived in philly..nancy johnson….and in the 19th century philly was filled with black chefs who fled france (revolution) and opened tons of catering businesses in philly…it was the place to go to eat and one of the main things people came to eat was ice cream.
Are you sure it wasn’t the steady diet of panties that made you ill?
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaat?
lol
have you ever had edible panties?
they are made of fruit rollups
No, I have never had occasion to eat “edible” panties, either new or used, thank god.
It’s nice to have you to do it so I don’t have to, however.
Heh.
My mom always made fresh peach ice cream in the summer … out in the garage … using a hand-cranked ice cream maker with rock salt and real fresh dairy cream and freshly picked peaches …
oh my god. Nothing like it ever.
Ohhh – my grandparents had one of those and there was nothing like fresh peach ice cream.
We all took turns…youngest kidlets first and then the grown-ups at the end…
Awwwwwww….store stuff just isn’t the same.
most especially Double Rainbow Ultra Chocolate. It’s the real San Francisco treat. Smooth, dark. The first “gourmet” ice cream I ever had lo these many years ago, and still the best. They sell retail, but I don’t know how widespread it is.
Another favorite also happens to be a San Francisco treat. The one and only It’s-It is an ice cream sandwich like no other, a scoop of ice cream between two big crunchy oatmeal cookies, all dipped in dark chocolate. The original flavor of ice cream is vanilla but now they make it with chocolate and coffee flavors too. Follow the link to find your it’s-it!
Chocolate is my favorite…
Scooped on top of sliced bananas and covered with chopped walnuts and almonds
~~ a mini banana split with only my favorite parts!
I will most heartily second the chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate. Plain dark or belgian chocolate-nothing to detract from the pure chocolate experience. And if I even have to distract myself with a second choice it would have to be Mocha, Mocha, Mocha-chocolate with a splash of coffee flavor symbiosing into Mocha…..heaven.
Speaking of which, Heaven will be paved with streets of chocolate due to a little known fact that yes, Jesus was a chocoholic. (he hadn’t had any chocolate in some time and thus caused his blood sugar to drop making him a bit cranky and setting off his little rampage against the money changers by the way.) Ah chocolate, it does a body good.
My first job as a teenager was at a Double Rainbow in Oakland. The Ultra Chocolate was hated among the staff for being so damn thick and rich that it’s near-impossible to scoop. Please, please, think of the children, and leave something in the tip jar if you must order the U.C.
(And there’s only one mention of Cherry Garcia in this thread? What kind of otherwise-decent liberals are you people? Geez.)
But I am so excited. I finally received my Booman teeshirt today in the mail. It is the white gal’s one and I love it, love it, love it. I have dinner every friday night with the kids in red country and will wear it then for the first time. Can’t wait for someone to ask me what it means…bwwwwwwaaaaaahahaha.
Dulce de Leche, the only non-B&J ice cream I ever buy.
Mint Chocolate Chip.
Karamel Sutra, Gobfather, Fudge Central….do I only get one if any of these will do?
just not loyal to any one kind!
Mad Martha’s Peppermint or Bubblegum
We always enjoyed Graeters (sp?) in Columbus & possibly the Cinci area. I prefer French vanilla alone or in hot fudge sundaes; Mrs. Gooserock likes the coffee.
Black Raspberry Chip for me, Coconut Chip for dear husband. We try to pick some up every time we visit my folks in Columbus. If you go to the Graeter’s old-timey shops, you can get the ice cream served with fresh whipped cream. It needs nothing more. The ice cream is just light enough, the chocolate very strong and dark yet a little soft in texture, not crunchy, and the chocolate pieces vary in size, some of them so big they take more than one bite. There are pieces that big in just about every pint.
Oh yes, I miss Graeter’s. Happy memories.
.
Makes daily fresh Italian specialties –
My favorite combination between waffles: stracciatella. – pistachio – malaga – with just a touch of fresh whipped cream!
Eh, but I do like some raspberry, and … make it easy for me, do an additional liter to take away, with hazelnut, pecan, lemon, tropical passion, banana …

Back in the sixties and seventies there was a chain of ice cream stores/restaurants in the Western US called Farrell’s Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor. The decor was strictly out of the Gay Nineties with candy-striped wallpaper, wainscoatting and a player piano, and they had pretty darn good ice cream. You could spend an hour trying to get to a table.
Their big specialty was called the Mount Rainier up here. In Portland it was the Mount Hood, in California the Mount Shasta, and so forth. You get the idea. It was basically one scoop of every kind of ice cream they had, topped with whipped cream and a cherry (and they had about 30 flavors).
They also had a concoction called a Pig Trough which was basically a banana split on steroids. If you ate one they brought out the bass drum and made a little presentation and gave you a ribbon that said I MADE A PIG OF MYSELF AT FARRELL’S. Get ten ribbons and you got a free Pig Trough.
They seem to have gone out of the franchise business (although I understand there are a still a few stores here and there), and the Seattle location has been a Korean restaurant and is now a fifties diner-themed eatery. But it still brings back memories of youth.
When I was little, I used to ask my grandma for the “dirty” ice cream. It was vanilla with the specs of vanilla beans. Nowdays, I love anything chocolate with nuts in it. All the better if it is paired with bananas and a little whipped cream.
Gotta be chocolate #1.
Raspberry sorbet a close second.
Mint chocolate chip third, tied with a good lemon Italian water-ice (Granita) with bits of lemon peel in it.
Can’t remember the brand, starts off chocolate, then swirls of fudge and raspberry throughout. Heaven.
I’ve been on an orange sherbet push-up kick lately though, just the right amount for an evening snack.
is Quarterback Crunch at Baskin-Robbins; it’s vanilla ice cream with chocolate covered Rice Krispies (the “crunch”) and a caramel ribbon. It’s great when I want something with a little bit of chocolate but not overly chocolatey. It’s only available during the football season, which means that it should be in the stores in about a month!
Rick’s Ice Cream (a Palo Alto institution) makes a great Mocha Chip ice cream, which I love whenever the spouse and I have a chance to get up there.
Commercially available ice creams: I love Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food, though it’s usually too rich for me; a good lighter choice is Cherry Garcia. (Both come in frozen yogurt as well, a little lighter in the fat department.)
Ice cream is almost as good as sex…and easier to get. 😉
Well, while it was available, I had an ongoing addiction to Haagan Daas “Creme Brulee”….
Otherwise, chocolate mint chip all the way.
Damn, now I have a CRAVING…. and it’s nearly one am there’s no ice cream in the house! Arrrrghhh!
Tomorrow I am going to see my periodontist for a checkup. I made the mistake of scheduling this appointment several months ago without realizing that I chose the day that Mariners’ pitching phenomenon Felix Hernandez will be making his major-league debut.
And because I will be out on a bus for 45 minutes each ways in 85 degree weather, I will most likely miss his entire performance and be hot, miserable and going to the dentist besides.
So I am going to console myself with the fact that in the building next to the one my periodontist has his office in, there is a Coldstone Creamery, and I am going to have an amaretto ice cream with black cherries and toffee bits in a waffle cone, and the hell with my diabetes and my diet for about two hours.
You are all allowed to be envious of me.
