“History will deal with George W. Bush and the neoconservatives who misled a mighty nation into a flawed war that is draining the finest military in the world, diverting Guard and reserve forces that should be on the front line of homeland defense, shredding international alliances that prevailed in two world wars and the Cold War, accumulating staggering deficits, misdirecting revenue from education to rebuilding Iraqi buildings we’ve blown up, and weakening America’s national security.
“But what will history say about an opposition party that stands silent while all this goes on? … ” (Who Will Say ‘No More’?, Washington Post, August 24, 2005)
If any Democratic leaders (or one from their staff) read this, they have to understand that the ball is in their court now. In my view what Cindy Sheehan, Paul Hackett, Joe Wilson, and John Conyers have done in the last four months, has set the table for the would-be presidents to take center stage and run with the ball. Is anyone out their listening?
By the way, is anybody going to jump on the Pat Robertson thing, or are we going to give them a free pass on this too??
When the middle class is gone, who will be left to support the Republicans in the manner to which they have grown accustomed?
Nice.
And a damned good question, too.
AuntiePeachy:
Thanks.
Today’s democratic party headlines. Your job is to find the positive message to counter the administration’s policies – ANY of them:
Th-th-th-th-at’s all folks! Your party’s positive message in action. Brilliant.
is one of my personal heroes.
If you haven’t read The Fourth Power, you absolutely must. One of the best jobs (if not the best) I’ve read of putting together a coherent strategy of moving forward, and recognizing how our national values, foreign policy, and domestic policy are all intertwined.
from the 2000 Hart-Rudman report which warned against terrorists’ attacking the USA. A report which GWB and Condi forgot to read.
As for the opposition, is Howard Dean, quietly saying to himself, “I told them so?” I can’t figure out why he stopped speaking out against the US occupation of Iraq. Or maybe I have not been listening.
I can’t figure out why he stopped speaking out against the US occupation of Iraq.
Because it’s not his job to do so — which is why the Dem establishment finally relented and let him have the DNC chairmanship: they knew they couldn’t shut him up completely, but they could keep him too busy with other stuff to talk quite as much.
I wouldn’t worry about it, though. The people Dean is encouraging to become active in the party will not be quiet. 😉
The people have been saying ‘No More!’ for a long time, but we have a strong enemy. Just by getting this wonderful piece published and into the conversation, Gary has moved the wheel quite a distance up the hill. We are not prisoners under torture praying for a savior, we are free people who have the power to act.
Everyone has a part to play. I cannot think about who will be my next leader, I’ve got plenty of leaders – some dead and some living. I need to focus on what I can do to support my sisters and brothers.
I diaried it on DKos, and it got Zero comments and recommendations. But here in the BooMan village it gets respect. 🙂
