Britain rebels against our hired asshole at the UN John Bolton. As documented in yesterdays diary he also intends to derail the nuclear non proliferation treaty and work to stop global warming.
Guardian Unlimited | The Guardian | Britain heads for clash with US: “A draft of that plan had included a review of progress on the UN’s millennium development goals – poverty eradication targets set in 2000 for completion by 2015 – and the introduction of reforms aimed at repairing the damage done to the UN’s reputation by Iraq, Rwanda and the Balkans.
But it was revealed this week that Mr Bush’s new ambassador to the UN, John Bolton, was seeking 750 changes to the 36-page draft plan to be presented to a special summit in New York on September 14 to 16. Mr Bolton’s amendments, if successful, would leave the plan in tatter……
The concern in British and other international circles is that the American objections, if adopted, would severely undermine the UN summit, the biggest-ever gathering of world leaders……
A source close to the UN secretary-general, Kofi Annan said it was too early to declare the UN plan dead. “Bolton wants to knock down the plan and start from scratch,” the source said. “He will find that his opinions are not shared by most of the rest of the world.”
The president of the UN general assembly, Jean Ping from the Gambia, has been working on the draft, covering issues of poverty, climate change, genocide, small arms, the creation of a permanent UN peacekeeping capability and reform of the UN management structure, for the past year………
It is ironic he would have the gall to do this, since he is undoubtedly one of the cast of characters that lied us into the war.
A declaration of ‘cold’ war on the world – except it will result in heated atmosphere in every respect.
Good that UK stands with the rest of the EU on this.
If Britain does remain steadfast with the rest of Europe in opposition to Bolton/Bush and in support of the original proposed UN reforms, does this mean that Tony Blair has abandoned any hopes or plans he might have had to get rich with the Carlyle Group? Link here.
From the UN Plenary Rules of Procedure, it looks like it only requires a two-thirds vote of the members to approve any item. The U.S. delegation may find itself very lonely out on that limb.

Filling in for Josh at TPM, Steve Clemons has received the leaked draft document [PDF] containing Bolton’s personal requested edits. The short version: Bolton is requesting the removal of various large areas of proposed reforms.
What an assho**
John R. Bolton, U.S. undersecretary of state for arms control gestures during a news conference after his address to the Biological Weapons Convention in Geneva, Switzerland on Monday Nov. 19, 2001. The United States identified Iraq and five other countries, as states that are developing germ warfare programs but refused to say whether any may have assisted Osama bin Laden in his quest for biological weapons.

Where’s the surprise?
The “ambassador” is a pure political hack, who was appointed by his friend George to do George’s bidding.
He is not America’s Ambassador to the UN
He’s Bush’s ambassador.
Bush didn’t have the stomach to even try to get him that title. Not even in a Congress he owns along party lines.
Why don’t some prominent Democrats get out there and say as much? A simple full-page ad in the NYT stating clearly that America believes in honoring its past treaties, and on working with the many countries of the world to tackle poverty, climate change, reform of the UN, and prevent genocide — and that the actions of Mr Bush’s private designate to the UN do not represent the will of the American people.
Heck, why not go all out and just declare “Until the Constitution is followed and the Senate confirms a candidate to become the US ambassador to the UN to represent America’s interests, the partisan political activist currently occupying America’s seat should be ignored.”
