Apparently militant antiabortion activist Jim Sedlak thinks refugees from Katrina who have lost everything should have to pay for reproductive health services — even if they are raped — or (heaven forbid), happen to be so fortunate as to have consensual sex.
Antiabortion leader Sedlak is outraged that Planned Parenthood of Houston is providing a free month of birth control pills and free emergency contraception to refugees from Katrina and issued a national press release to say so:
“While Planned Parenthood’s latest stunt is disgusting and utterly inappropriate, it is not surprising,” said Sedlak of STOPP International, a subsidiary of the American Life League. “The bottom line is that Planned Parenthood is out to promote its own agenda and will stop at nothing to take advantage of an opportunity to do so… the organization is exploiting one of the worst natural disasters in American history for cheap publicity by offering one month’s supply of free birth control and so-called emergency contraception to victims of Katrina.
Here is the real story:
Planned Parenthood of Houston and Southeast Texas has announced that it “is working closely with Planned Parenthood of Louisiana and the Mississippi Delta (PPLAMD) to ensure that individuals from Louisiana can continue to get birth control and other reproductive health services during the current crisis. PPLAMD provides services in Baton Rouge and New Orleans. As of August 30th, the Baton Rouge clinic has re-opened, New Orleans has not. Planned Parenthood of Houston and Southeast Texas has offered to those fleeing Hurricane Katrina one free cycle (one month) of birth control or one free Emergency Contraception kit to women presenting to a PPHSET clinic with a valid Louisiana or Mississippi driver’s license.”
Donations to help Louisiana Planned Parenthood can be made here.
some states may try to ban birth control pills and EC if Roe is overturned, since they are viewed by many as abortifacients.
Refugees will be denied right along with everyone else.
With the complicity of the administration, of course. The US gov’t put up 4parents.gov, and it did have pregnancy defined as when the sperm and egg join, although it looks like they changed that to the medically correct implantation because of the outcry.
They do give a pregnancy description month-by-month that appears tailored to an antiabortion agenda, and their condom information tries to make condoms look unreliable.
these women should have remembered to retrieve thier supply of birth control pills before they grabbed their children and ran to the attic or were swept out of their houses by raging floodwaters.
If the accounts of rapes inside the convention center, the superdome, and in the city streets in the darkness of night are true, these women will need planned parenthood to stand up for them and come through with the reproductive help they need. Certainly this assbag “pro-lifer” would prefer they carry out “God’s plan” and go through with a traumatic pregnancy while they are homeless and under unimaginable stress.
these women need right now, while they are homeless and don’t know how they’re going to care for the children they already have — one more unexpected natural disaster.
Just remember… When Democrats for Life and their supporting bloggers are prattling on, this is the kind of thing they’re implicitly supporting.
That’s why these people are the enemy as much as any Republican.
In many cases there’s nothing implicit about it. Plenty of them are happy to come right out and say so.
Exactly. The Pro (fetal) life crowd is despicable. With them it isn’t about life, its about hatred of women. And if you scratch any of the democratic representatives who profess these same beliefs you’ll oft find the same hidden agenda underlying their artful, carefully crafted patina of progressivism.
I congratulate Planned Parenthood of Houston and Southeast Texas for doing what everyday Americans do in a tragedy, they willingly lend a hand. What’s STOPP International doing for the women and men of the newly destroyed south today other than showing us that patented right wing republican virtue, hatred for fellow americans who are different from them?
Oh, yeah, we shouldn’t politicizing the disaster, no, we should just sit quietly by while assholes like this take to the airwaves — that mofo better not get anywhere NEAR Texas any time soon.
Exposing incompetence is not politicizing the situation.
Their failures are not political as much as they are just flat stupid. Stupidity and incompetence should be exposed and publicized immediately and widely.
There have been reports of rape and this fool has the nerve to spout off some bullshit at a press conference?
You can’t blame Bush for a hurricane, but you can damn sure blame abortion clinics and gays and lesbians for it, right?
Wouldn’t it be nice if Sedlak gave a damn about the people already in this world?
I am SO sick of these people. Why don’t they just crawl back into their 17th century hole where they belong and leave the rest of us the hell alone?
I’m sorry. I’ve avoided a lot of the hurricane news until today. I’m so angry I could just scream. As far as I’m concerned Sedlak and his ilk can go drown themselves in the flood waters since they can’t seem to do anything useful.
