Attention: Displaced College Students

I got a mass email at my university (Oklahoma Panhandle State University) regarding accomodating students displaced by Hurricane Katrina:

All Facutly & Staff –

This is an announcement that OPSU is offering late enrollment over-ride, tuition-only waivers and campus housing waivers to any college students that have been displaced by Hurricane Katrina for the Fall 2005 semester.

If you know of any students that could benefit from this, please have these students contact Dr. Manning (800-664-6778, Ext. 1402/1400) so that we can begin to accommodate these students.

Thank you so much for your attention to this.

We’re a small rural state university and (of course I’m biased, since I’m on faculty at OPSU) it’s a good place be.

George Washington University link

We have received several inquiries from persons at universities that have been directly affected by Katrina. GW’s enrollment for the fall semester was largely complete before Katrina hit and our housing was set for the fall semester. With that said, GW will welcome students from these universities as nondegree students on a space-available basis and in anticipation of their return to their home institutions. These students would need to register for classes that are not yet full and would be responsible for their own housing. GW will waive the late registration fee for these students.

My husband just got home and he says he was working on getting a number of Tulane students into UT’s database — he says it’s all kind of a big mess right now (go figure) but it always is this time of year (UT just started back in session on Wed.)….

Has anyone heard anything at all about the students at Xavier U? There were reports that there were 400 students trapped there…

Students can enroll for fall term without being charged tuition. The Knox academic calendar features three ten-week terms, the first of which is scheduled to begin on Thursday, September 8. The deadline for affected students to enroll will be extended to Wednesday, September 14. This makes it possible for students to enroll for a full course load.

“We recognize that this disaster has affected millions of people living along the Gulf Coast, along with college students around the country,” explains Paul Steenis, Dean of Admission. “We hope this will enable some of those young people to continue their educations while their own colleges clean up and prepare for their return.”

For students who choose to live on campus, room and board will be assessed at regular rates.

Interested students should contact Paul Steenis, Dean of Admission, at 800-678-KNOX.
