This is unbelievable. I saw these images in the LA Times:
First, a picture with a caption reading, “Hospital patient James Anderson of New Orleans spent two days sleeping on a piece of thin cardboard on the floor of New Orleans International Airport.”
And then this image of dogs — DOGS! — being bussed out of the city. Caption reads: “Over 150 dogs and other animals were evacuated from an animal hospital after their owners had left town without them.”
Is this really a country that would take better care of dogs than we do people?! This is beyond disgraceful.
My mouth is literally hanging open at this.
Shit, even the lucky dogs are blond!
Racism. And classism. It couldn’t be more stark.
Completely Fucked.
A lot of animals have been abandoned, though. In fact, I saw interviews with people who stayed in NO, because the evacuation systems refused to board them with pets. My guess is this is part of an animal rescue system. We are NOT treating dogs better than people. These dogs got lucky, just as some people got lucky with rescue efforts. Many more will suffer and die.
No doubt a lot of animals have been abandoned. In fact, I read that the people being bussed to the Astrodome couldn’t take dogs on the buses and had to leave family pets behind. But when there are people literally dying in the streets and there’s a working bus in the city, does it really make sense for it to be used to transport animals to safety?
If the government had it’s act together, buses and trucks would have been commandeered to get people out and get supplies in.
Yes, the animals got lucky. But the people should’ve known better.
I guess I should clarify that when I say, “the people should have known better,” I meant the people driving the bus with the dogs.
Just goes to show, always proof read before posting!
Of course it makes sense, if that’s what you are accepting donations to do. There are animal protection agencies that mobilized immediately to do this and took donations. Some of us care about animals and don’t think that they are lesser beings than people. If you don’t, don’t donate to those organizations. If you want to begrudge those of us who think animals also matter, be my guest.
“There are animal protection agencies that mobilized immediately to do this”
Well then, I guess one thing we can agree on is that the animal protection agencies should be giving FEMA some advice right now.
