We’ve got fresh coffee and I might even serve it myself!
I got the results of my latest blood tests back — and not one line was “out of range”. For a girl with diabetes, that was great news!
Now, I just have to keep doing the same things (which might be harder than it sounds).
That is great news! It must be all that walking you do, and it’s worth the effort!
Yeh, I think it is (and I’ve lost quite a bit of weight — with a long way to go still).
One interesting thing is that while I have low cholestrol and that’s considered good, my HDLs have always been “dangerously low”. This time all the bad stuff went down by a fair amount more, but the HDL went up by enough that it is in range for the first time ever!
And I think that’s because of the walking also.
It’s a pretty finicky process. I keep track of everything I eat and all exercise in a computer program (fitday). And monitor my blood sugar compulsively. And drink 3 liters of water a day.
And go to work?
Well, I don’t have to tell you that all of that effort puts you in with the only 25-35% of people with diabetes who are able to achieve good glycemic control. It is an incredible achievement you’ve made!
You’re right, CabinGirl. But the scary fact is that I’ve obtained this kind of control before, only to let it slip away (for way, way too long).
The thing that haunts me is that I know I have the focus to maintain this level of control for some (unknown) period of time. But, do I have the focus to do it forever?
I tend to be very good at succeeding in the tasks that have my full attention. But what happens when life moves into a different phase and I can’t focus on myself with this intensity? In the past, the answer has been that the control slips away.
The answer might me, that I can’t give up this focus, no matter what else life is throwing out. But, I just don’t know how that’s going to work out in the long run.
Anyway, that’s my project for next year, not this.
Dang! I knew I was forgetting to use something!
No, you’re not. You’ve that incredible ability to focus and organize working for you. I’ve had to family members “give in” to their diabetes and what they didn’t have is the determination that I see in you. I realize that I don’t exactly “know” you but so much people do reveal so much of themselves that I do believe we get to understand people in deeper ways than we often do with people IRL.

I can only speak about the folks I met in DC, but it is amazing how much ourselves we are online.
I actually think that I am more willing to reveal myself online than I am in most social situations. For one thing, people online don’t have the distractions (attractiveness, style, status, etc.) and so pay closer attention to what you are actually saying. And for people like me who are uncomfortable in social situations, this kind of interaction is very relaxing and freeing.
OTOH, as I look at what you quoted, the online world does expose my lousy proofreading skills.
His docs think he, too, can get it under control without going on lifetime insulin, but he’s struggling so much that I suggested they take a look at food sensitivity.
I had “low blood sugar” for many years till the penetration of sensibly diverse food into Ohio allowed me to discover that it was really a wheat sensitivity. A quick google of the subject revealed that food sensitivities can cause a wide variety of symptoms. A number of sites recommened checking for food sensitivity if you are having trouble getting control of some other condition.
It’s easy and cost-free to check, but depending on the food you’re considering, it might be tricky because foods like wheat or corn can be ingredients listed under other names (modified food starch = wheat) or not listed (white vinegar I believe comes from wheat).
is often wheat but not always, so it’s worth double checking. Usually you can check with the product manufacturer. And some, like Kraft or Kemp will always label if it’s wheat starch. My wife’s got celiac sprue so we’ve spent tons of time on this. If you haven’t been to celiac.com, glutenfreemall.com, or glutensolutions.com you should try them. Are you wheat sensitive only or does the whole gluten family cause you problems? For those not in the gluten info loop that’s wheat, rye, barley, spelt, kamut, hops, malt.
Thanks for the link, Kelly.
Seems to be very specific to wheat. I enjoy rye crackers and of course my nightly carbonated liquid cereal!
We’d discovered this trigger over a friend’s spelt-pasta dinner, after which I felt distinctly nonbad for the first time in almost 20 years. Thank God that for some reason I’d skipped bread that night. I had a hunch by morning so I had the leftovers for breakfast. That’s par for me–I had raw oysters this morning. Anyways by mid day we knew what the problem was.
This past spring I had spelt bread regularly for a couple of months and then gradually began to get symptoms back. So either I’ve sensitized myself to it, or at best I can only have it occasionally.
Never had the least reaction from beer, so far as I can tell, other than the reactions everyone gets.
I’m glad to hear that you don’t have a broader spectrum problem. Avoiding wheat is a little easier than gluten. But the gluten free stuff should all be pretty good for you, so it’s worth looking into. There have been huge advances in just the past five years both in terms of labeling and more varieties of food.
There are some fabulous pastas made mostly with potato, soy, corn, and rice flours. Bionatura in particular has great wheat free stuff. I have a hard time distinguishing their pasta from durham wheat pasta. In the bread department we’ve had mixed luck. Whole Foods now has a gluten free bakery that supplies products to all their outlets. We’ve been really pleased with them. Also, Nature’s Hilights makes a fabulous brown rice pizza crust. I actually prefer it to most wheat crusts. I think we’ve got a list of resources around somewhere if you want it. You can email me via the form at my webpage if you’re interested. The link’s under my sig.
All best,
Good morning all.
Katie, I’ve been saving this week’s walking song for you for days – from Pete Seeger –
Well I’ve got a hammer
And I’ve got a bell
And I’ve got a song to sing
All over this land
It’s the hammer of justice
It’s the bell of freedom
It’s the song about love between my brothers and my
sisters
All over this land
Cabin – sorry I had to walk away from you and Pete, I just don’t have the patience to argue with college boys. They’ve got too much to prove.
Ahh, Alice that’s perfect! Thank you, thank you — I will be singing that song as I walk today!
(And I don’t have the patience to argue with anyone, anymore. I’ve invented a new phrase: “OK.” It stops an argument cold.)
That’s brilliant – I hope I can use it sometime, but I have a genetic predisposition to fight back. I like to think it’s the Irish in me rather than a personality flaw.
Also congratulations on your health achievement, I could use a personal trainer like you. Have fun on the walk – will you bring back a photo?
My mom’s a fighting Portugese: It almost makes her eyes cross when I use that OK line!
Just to make her happy, I’ll argue with her once in a while.
every now and then because my mother says no one every wins an argument with me (I might be just a little bit stubborn).
Hey, thanks for helping me the way you did. Was that guy the infamous Petey over at dkos?

and of course a fine cup of Douwe Egberts coffee!
▼ ▼ ▼ MY DIARY
Oui,
If that is you drinking your coffee – You are VERY flexible!
Is the Douwe Egberts coffee site made for IE? I use firefox and it looked a little weird.
Tea, lots and lots of tea. That’s what I’m looking for this morning. Perhaps a 2nd flush Darjeeling. Hope everybody is having a pleasant beginning to their weekend.
If anyone’s interested, I’ve got a snarky “Dear Wingers” diary getting ready to scroll off the bottom of the recent list, Here.
It’s the the LTE I can’t send to the local paper.
Here’s your tea:
— I’ve recommended your diary, given my 4’s and now, I’m off for my morning walk.
Can you-all help yourselves for a while?
I just realised something: I won’t be around for the photo fair! The 8th and 9th are Thanksgiving w/e in Canada, and we always go up to the family cottage where there’s no internet access at all.
I didn’t clue in until just this minute. Oh no. Now I’m totally bummed.
🙁
Olivia!!
I would never have set that date if I’d known, How horrible! I can’t believe I messed up like that.
It’s way to late to change it, now….
I am so, very sorry.
It’s not your fault. I’m the dummie that didn’t clue in until ONE WEEK BEFORE! I’m so sad about it. Oh crap. Well… Make sure you save all the links somewhere, because I sure as hell don’t want to miss ONE single photo diary. Shoot.
let Olivia do her diaries on Friday? I don’t want to miss her best flower pictures.
And we can leave the diaries around for a day or two so people who were gone for the weekend can still seem them.
BTW, did you get my email about the notecards?
Andi, I’ve sent you an email.
And Olivia, if you want to send me photos for the fair (as soon as we get the standards finalized, slapping self) with title, captions and text for each one: I’ll make sure they are included in the fair.
And I’m sure we will still have access to the fair photos for most of the week afterwards.
Yes! – No rules. Friday is Saturday. Freedom is on the march! Olivia starts first. Unless she leaves on the 7th. We’ll all click like mad on Saturday for Boo’s sake.
So sorry guys, to mess up like this. My only excuse is that I have been putting off thinking about Thanksgiving b/c I just started this new job and it’s taking all my energies. I know that the holiday is coming, but it was always in the future … didn’t connect the dates. Didn’t want to think about the things I’d have to do. And now it’s next week! (And I’ve been assigned to make the bread and the pie and some cookies … Busy, busy week.)
I’m so sorry again. I can get my stuff ready, and that way I can always send it to katiebird, or post a diary early that can be linked to the main fair diary or something…
I’m most upset about missing everyone else’s diaries, and the interaction though. (That’s why I want to make sure to find all the links!)
I hate the idea of missing live conversation with you through the fair — since that will be a large part of the experience.
But, I’m sure we won’t let the links disappear quickly. They will still be there when you get back.
My brother-in-law, is a film editor and his latest movie, Capote, opened yesterday in LA & NY. I’m stuck in Kansas City, so I haven’t seen it yet. But, the reviews are mostly good: Rotten Tomatoes.
It’s a film about the years Capote spent researching and writing In Cold Blood.
Has anyone seen it yet?
What a beutiful day here… Gonna have to get out in the sun!
Finished with the papers? Wiped the crumbs of your treat from you mouth? Ready to head on over to the diary section for while before getting back on the road to the TV and college football or BoSox baseball? Tnen. . .
While we all enjoy a good Dean Scream rant of a diary on occasion, I’ve written an essay on the Senator Obama “discussions” that I’d appreciate your reactions to. Unashamed and unabashed (dangerous combo) advertisement to read my diary.
Ummm, that tea by the window, is it sun tea by any chance?
