   Is Reid consciously trying to drive a wedge between moderate and radical Republicans?

     he mentioned that he found out that she had donated $1,000 to Al Gore’s presidential campaign.

     What would be the purpose of mentioning that besides to inflame wingers?

       …when Gore was the standard bearer for the right wing of the party.  Miers was a conservative, anti-choice Democrat in the ’80s, who has, by all accounts, since moved further to the right. She’s apparently only become a born-again Christian in the last several years.

       Being a Democrat in the past is no sign of political grace, unless you’re a big Strom Thurmond, Phil Gramm, Norm Coleman, George Wallace, or David Duke fan.

   Reports on Miers donations to Gore forget Gore chair became Republican Texas governor

   While the conservative Drudge Report and the rest of the mainstream media trumpet revelations that Bush Supreme Court nominee Hariet Miers gave $1,000 to Al Gore’s 1988 presidential campaign — there’s something they’re not revealing, RAW STORY has found.

   Gore’s Texas campaign chair in the 1988 primaries was none other than the now-Republican governor of Texas and Bush ally Rick Perry. Perry’s record reveals he is no Al Gore.

   The $1,000 Miers gave — was for the primary.

   In 2005, Perry signed a bill limiting late term abortions and requiring women under 18 to obtain parental permission for an abortion. He signed the bill in the gymnasium of the evangelical Calvary Christian Academy, which spawned criticism from pro-choice advocates and supporters for the separation of church and state.

   He told the 1992 Republican National Convention: “Folks, I joined the Republican Party because I learned that the Democratic Party could not be trusted to run the state of Texas, much less the United States. That time, I was dead right.”

   Perry, a onetime Democrat, became a Republican in 1989.

     not that Mier is a RINO with liberal sympathies, but rather that Reid is trying to stir up the radical conservative branch of the Republican party (which makes up, what? about 85% of it so it seems…)

       I’ve never been a big fan of Harry Reid, but I loved his “approval” of Ms. Miers, couched in terms sure to dive the wingnuts crazy.  Even before innocently dropping the Gore contribution bomb, he used the terrible L word…., no the terrible TL words.

       “Harriet Miers has served with distinction as a trial lawyer. That’s what I am. I’m a trial lawyer,” said Reid, standing next to Miers outside the Senate chamber. “So anyone with that background makes me feel good.”

       I visualized the fundies clutching their heads and moaning, “Oh, no, not a TRIAL LAWYER !”
