What has always fascinated me is the process…seeing the image in situ, and trying to capture it on film in an expressive way. It is a difficult and time consuming process requiring patience and a good deal of luck sometimes. Because these were all done with a traditional “film” camera, you never know what you’ve got until it’s developed. I have had a digital SLR for @ a month now and have pretty much set it up to function manually…my favorite, still, is the camera I’ve used for the past 30 + years, it’s like an old friend and lover to me, very familiar, comfortable and accommodating.
NOTE: (for those interested in such things) All of these images were captured with a conventional camera, using existing light; Canon FTb, manual SLR, with a variety of lenses, 50mm, 28mm, 85-205mm zoom, using Ektachrome 200 slide film. No photoshopping was used in their presentation.
Great photos. When I’m looking for art on the net I am drawn to paintings of doorways/windows-either looking in or out so these photos of yours are particularly compelling to me.
I’m very pleased that you have found something in my work that speaks to you personally.
It’s very difficult to guess what the reactions will be when one puts up art for public display. It is always my hope to be able to make beauty a part of the discussion / perception of the work.
great work there dada, and of you, I would expect no less ; )
I still use an FTb, and the QL version as well on occasion, and the slide film is the excellent selection of film. I have to admit, I have collected camera’s for many years, and have a storage building full…LOL…it’s my vice….well one of the stronger ones anyway ; )
I’m on the road bro, everything is packed away in storage, only have one Cannon with me, it’s all I had room for :~(
I would have loved to bring the usual field trip equipment, but not enough room, and then have to pack in and out of motel rooms….sucks
I’m anxious to get settled here soon I hope, and then I’ll have all my babies back with me ; ) (all 400+ of them ; ) from 1883…..on I still use the oldest, a wooden one, 8×10, what a hoot…LOL
as for the pics, geeesh, I have boxes full, and some cd’s, but none with me…I’m enjoying all the others posted at the photog fair..waaaaayyy coool
Hello Dada. I especially like your observance of Light and Shape and Dark in contrast to light. Excellent eye. Even if it’s there for all to see, you have to have noted it in order to capture it. Lovely.
It means a lot coming from you and Mr. Puget4, AKA Gooserock. :{) It was he, with his postings in the cafe, who was instrumental in my desire to learn how to post pix.
Also, I am of the school that light is the magicof photography. What I try to do is capture the light and ‘paint’ with it on the film to accentuate the forms of the subject and create a ‘mood’, if you will. The direction, source, intensity and quality of it and the contrasts between the densities of black and white and colors it what take a picture beyond the realm of ‘snap shot’ imagery into the realm of ‘photography’.
Obviously, selection of subject, views, framing and many other things go into the creation of a photograph of any kind. Plus a healthy dose of patience and oft times just plain old luck. I have on occasion sat for hours waiting for the light to be what I wanted and at other times just pointed and shot because it was already there. Not to mention the immense amount of film spent with bracketing exposures and shooting different views.
Probably TMI, but it is an avocation that I truly love and enjoy. The realization that others find it appealing is very satisfying.

Oh…Oh…this photo takes my breath away!
The swirls please my eye so much and the details to study and return to again and again.
Almost monochromatic – shades and tones with hints of other colors in the painting and windows.
Just beautiful – thanks.

It looks like the details in the archway are glowing!
Thanks. Part of that is that the decorative elements are painted over gold leaf, and the reflected light accentuated the effect.

And your photos are spectacular. In fact, I was thinking of blaming them for my mistake — I was so dazzled I lost where I was in the email list 😉
Really, though, you photos are wonderful. (My husband drooled all over my monitor screen just looking at them.

Thank you.
