Hi, BooBookies.
A few days ago nominations were entered for the next book for us to read together and then discuss. I have listed those books below, along with Links to their spots at Powells’ bookstore so you may read about them. Or, you can go to our previous diary where there’s lots of info: LINK:
You’ll see that they’re all fiction this time. That’s because it was the sense of the group in the nominating diary that it would be nice to do fiction now and then. Therefore, voila!
Sorry to be a bit late putting this up, but since we’ve set the next meeting back to the first Saturday in Dec., I thought I could get away with it. 🙂
Please lobby for your pick!
The Constant Gardener by John Le Carre. . .InfoLINK:
Cry of the Peacock by Gina Nahai. . .InfoLINK:
The Eight by Katherine Neville. . .InfoLINK:
Oh, Pure and Radiant Heart by Lydia Millet. . .InfoLINK:
Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire. . .InfoLINK:
I voted for Pure and Radiant Heart partly because I’ve already read The Eight and Constant Gardener and I want to read something new, and also because it looks totally fascinating. But the others I haven’t read–Wicked and Peacock look really good, too.
coincidence that you put this up while I was out of town or was it fear of the almighty power of the Church of the Blue Dot?
Ha! We experimented with free will. But you see we waited for you to get back for the vote. What does god want us to read? (For those of you who missed the announcement, it was discovered that our very own AndiF is omniscient which, by definition, makes her god. What a relief.)
You’ve been promoted in your absence.
otherwise,I’d know the end of your books before I started them.
OTOH, if I accepted the position, you could hire me to be an omniscient narrator.
ou could hire me to be an omniscient narrator.
lol! I wish there were a contest so this could win it.
win any contest. The last contest of any kind that I won was a guess the beans in the jar contest when I was eight.
Some day I hope to write my book, The Cheesecake Diaries, and hope you’ll include it on your list of potential nominees.
🙂
We will devour it.
Did somebody say cheesecake? Hey, Cinci can’t be that bad. I was there to change planes once. Nice airport. Love cheesecake too.
It is a nice airport. A couple of times I’ve been able to fly Air Midwest through there and what with their superb service and that airport, compared to other airports, I thought I had landed in the airport of heaven. St. Peter’s International.
we really need to get you to cincinnati so my mom-in-law can make cheesecake for you. Problem is that once you’ve had hers, you will fall into complete Martha’s-cheesecake-lust and never want to leave and I would feel really bad if I trapped anyone in cincinnati.
Maybe MArtha could just share her recipe and save us all from Cincinnati?
We’re doing dessert recipes in the Friday cafe on 11/11, I think…nudge, nudge.
once before but I have a sneaky suspicion that she’s might be more of a buyer than a baker.
But for those of you who are more ambitious and have a springform pan, I’ll put it up.
I’ve actually been to Cincinatti – way back in the early 90s – the weekend before Clinton was first elected. I remember it well because he ended up staying in the same hotel as me that Saturday nite. 🙂
(no blue dress or cigar involved)
I suppose it would go well as a dessert to be eaten with chili? I’ve never seen so many chili places as in Cincin.
Will I get royalties?
I vote for the Constant Gardner, even though I still have to finish the last BooBook. :/
You’ll have to fight John Le Carre for them, but hey, he’s old.
I adored the Smiley series. LOVED it. Was addicted to it. But I haven’t been able to like any of his subsequent books nearly as well. Do want to see the movie though.
Hey, ManE, I looked at our new map and I see that you’re identical twins. How does your mother tell you apart?
One of us has a birthmark that only a mother would know its location 😉 LOL
Maybe for the next Photo Fair. . .
Web Filters across the world would ping with unity.
Will I get royalties?
Only if you don’t actually eat the book.
Slaps forehead. Knocks self over. Decides not to slap forehead ever again.
ManE meant the cheesecake book! Not the Le Carre book. You were very tactful, Manny!
I figured catnip would eventually start a flamewar in here and the truth would be revealed; but I guess I’m going to have to push a few more buttons before I get my daily tongue-lashing. 🙂
Oh…well, still…he has a bad habit of eating things that don’t belong to him.
🙂
All these books sound like great reading so it was hard to pick just one. I really like the sound of Wicked but ended up opting for The Constant Gardener. Mainly because I was thinking once the movie comes out on dvd we can revisit our ideas on the book and see how the movie stacked up to it. This could be sort of a two-fer diary. One for the book and one when dvd comes out.
That’s true! A Boofer?
‘Boofer’..the popcorn addition.
I voted for the constant gardener. However, I do want to know more about them all…I just adore all of you for this. I do not get much time to read, so thanks lots.
Please, Vote for OH PURE AND RADIANT HEART, I’d love to read this with you!!!
The only reason I didn’t vote for Wicked is that I’ve already read it two or three times. It’s a marvelous novel! Regardless of whether we read it for BooBooks, everyone should find a copy and read it anyway.
It sounds great. I’m just pushing for OH Pure because it’s calling me right now from the floor next to my bed (where I pile all the best books).
Can we use Diebold hacks to fix Booman polls?
can’t just stuff the ballot box? My family is from Chicago; I can consider it an absolute right of universal suffrage to get to vote in an election as many times as I went.
Ah, Chicago–where the voting rolls and the obituary column have been known to overlap!
I haven’t read the Constant Gardener yet, and I have heard that it is really good.
How does the voting work here? Do books carry over to the next vote if they have enough votes? A couple of those other books sound interesting too! lol
