I didn’t want this week to pass without a jazz jam, so I’m going to temporarily fill in for Knoxville Progressive this week. I finally got McCoy Tyner’s excellent Extensions album, which is noteworthy for also including Alice Coltrane – Tyner’s replacement when he left John Coltrane’s group in 1965.
More below:
“Message from the Nile” is reminiscent of the sorts of tunes found on Asante and Sahara – slow-moving, majestic in sound; imagine floating down a major river, just taking in the sights, smells, sounds, and so on. “The Wanderer” is an up-tempo hardbop rave-up that fits in with his earlier work. He taps into the blues for “Survival Blues” opening up plenty of space for his and Alice’s improvisations. “His Blessings” opens with a harp solo by Alice Coltrane, that in combo with the other instrumentation make the piece fit in very nicely with the sorts of albums Ms. Coltrane was doing at the time. Gorgeous album. Whatcha listening to?
in the tradition of the music. Peace.
You can listen to both their albums on their website.
Wow. Thanks for the tip. There truly is so much interesting music out there if one digs around. π
Wow! What a pleasant surprise! Thanks a lot for covering for me, J.B.! π
Since you asked, I’m listening to the following, courtesy of the Knoxville Public Library:
At least some of the above will show up next week, so consider this a coming attraction. π
I’ll have to keep my eyes open for the McCoy Tyner CD; he’s yet another favorite (I should profile him for Boston Joe). Two of the first jazz albums I ever got were his “Atlantis” album (1974) and “Fly With The Wind” (1976), almost 25 years ago, at a used record store while I was in grad school at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Was more than happy to cover for ya! Figured from one of your comments earlier this week that a jazz jam wouldn’t be in the cards, and I just gotta have that Friday Nite Jam!
I’ll be interested in what you have in store for us next Friday, given the coming attractions. π
Greg Osby is one of those cats I’ve thought about picking up an album from, but just haven’t. What would be your suggestions for primo albums by him?
I only have a couple myself, so I’ll have to look into that before next week. π
