I have been unable to get to dailykos on either of two Macintosh computers using either Safari or Explorer. I can here using Explorer, but not Safari – the page will not fully load. I am having a similar pattern with myleftwing. And in going to Juan Cole, or TPM, the page fully loads in explorer, but in Safari on either machine, the page never fully loads until I click the X to stop loading.
I have powered off both machines and restarted. I have reset Safari. I have cleared histroy and cookies. No luck.
I am wondering the following
- is there a problem with dkos?
- are there problems with other sites?
- how might I have corrupted Safari and if I have how dow I fix the problem? Advice greatly welcomed
and that’s affecting Street Prophets as well since they’re on the same server AFAIK. Haven’t tried any of my other bookmarks, either on Firefox or Safari. BooTrib seems to be working fine, at least.
How’ve you been? Haven’t seen your handle lately — though I remember you saying you were going to be swamped with work. (I think of you every time I talk to my niece about the education wars — she’s a 4th grade teacher who just got to transfer to her neighborhood school.)
Wishing you and yours a happy and healthy holiday season… 🙂
at the latter on the front page
since I post my stuff at my own blog as well, crossposting on a 4th blog just seemed a bit “greedy”
Still busy. Soccer season over, but now into Musical Theater (we finished casting yesterday) for which I am now musical director (I have the background, no other teacher really does, and the one who used to is now in her 2nd year of retirement).
I passed my national board certification.
I am also doing some political things on the side.
And I am about to get started with a huge stack of essay tests and miniprojects that I need to get through by Monday.
Seems like Sitemeter is hanging up; that’s happened before.
I think it’s an Internets problem, not Safari or anything on your end.
Haven’t had the time to check MLW for your stuff; too much Real Life in my neck of the woods. Will have to remember to add that into the rotation somewhere (heck, sleeping’s overrated anyway…).
now seems to be hanging up on BooTrib as well; at least the rest of the page loads while Sitemeter lags behind.
Not sure how a DoS attack works (or doesn’t); any way to track it back if it is happening? Most of my other bookmarks seem to be working okay…
I’ve been looking for someone else having problems getting on dk/sp… Glad it’s not just me/my mac. But I hope dkos is ok. Hopefully Markos shut it down to avert the virus attack.
I had the same problems. Not sure what’s going on. MyDD is doing the same thing too.
I wonder if there is a concerted attack on servers hosting progressive/liberal sites?
But I am wondering why I am now having different functioning between safari and explorer. I am having no trouble on explorer with booman, but cannot get full functionality on safari?
Booman took forever to load, but other than Kos, the others are working.
Teacherken, a less paranoid explanation might be that a lot of people are shopping online, tying up communications networks of all sorts. ‘Tis the Season of Spendmas and Debtmukkah, after all, is it not?
Yup I can’t get to Dkos or Crooks & Liars.
at http://www.washingtonmonthly.com was up this morning (10:00am GMT), and now it’s down.
maybe the virus is being taken care of.
dkos is still hosed though.
now able to get full page on both booman and myleftwing on safari
still no dkos
I’ll check on it later
FWIW, the machine seems to be up, but the web server isn’t responding.

Notice that it’s EXACTLY the same. Except for one change in the first line. A lovely piece of Turkish Delight to the first child in class who can spot the change!
Then we’ll play “Where’s Waldo?”
i’m having a hard time getting good porn on the net these days…anyone else?
Yes – there is an overall Sober attack going on, pretty intense. Yesterday on dkos, a person working for one of the big ISP’s warned about it. Traffic is not quite at a standstilll, but close. Emails are being held up. There’s also a noted glitch going on with MSN and Comcast.net.
Depending on where the webservers are housed, it’s affecting quite a few sites including ePMedia, Dkos, etc.
I’m getting all kinds of emails from earthlink telling me about blocked Sober emails.
Do I need to worry?????
please see the diary i posted at dkos, mydd, and MLW yesterday. please take appropriate action to ensure you are protected.
Thanks so much.
When a virus is let loose and expands thru the internet it increases traffic exponentionally and that slows everything down. Some routing hubs are more affected than others and packets of data get jammed up waiting to be transferred. The safest thing a business can do is to shut their servers down and wait for the attack to subside.
Individuals should not open any emails from unknown sources; delete them. Even known sources with attachments should be deleted unopened. After all Aunt Suzie can always send you those jpg’s of her new puppy another day when you expect them. Make a note to email Aunt Suzie tomorrow or the day after and ask if she sent you an attachment and if so, would she please send it again.
Thank you for the CLEAR explanation in ordinary everyday English.
This makes sense–hackers would logically launch an attack on networks as email and commercial traffic on the Net increase dramatically due to the holiday shopping season.
What’s a Sober attack?
Sober is a virus spreading via e-mail. There are many slightly different Sobers, the newest one is Sober.Y and seems to be already the year’s biggest virus attack.
….now the largest virus outbreak in internet history. please take appropriate precautions to ensure you are protected.
Anna – Thanks for the incredibly detailed article on MyDD – very interesting and much appreciated. (And something that should be read by all – especially considering the number of opportunities we’ve been granted through the many links in this thread.) I particularly appreciated your suggestion to turn off “system restore” prior to running scans – that advice was completely new to me.
Since you seem to be quite knowledgeable about the subject (assuming you’re still out there and are willing/able to help a fellow blogger) I was wondering if this virus created the unbelievable system scan results I encountered last night.
As a bit of background, I have three anti-virus programs enabled/running at all times, and I run full-system scans two to three times a day because my home-officed business requires a great deal of Internet research. I never open e-mails from unknown sources, and I’m damn cautious in general – because I can ill afford not to be.
Well, last night I sat in horror as my system scan revealed ever-increasing tallies of virus after virus – for a grand total of 57 viruses in all. And if memory serves me, I only stopped by a few sites yesterday. (And had run a full system scan only hours earlier).
Also . . . over the last several months, I’ve encountered the most peculiar problem with many of my stored e-mails. The e-mails show up as being there – with the sender’s name, date, subject, message size, etc. However, when I open the stored e-mail – the content is blank. No text whatsoever. Last but not least, during a few days last week, every e-mail I received displayed zero KBs – no matter how large the e-mail.
Oh my – I really had no intention of turning this post into a tech-support inquiry/thread derailing. But as long as there are knowledgeable folks out there, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to give it a shot. Having said that – I’d greatly appreciate any thoughts you might have.
And with that – I can’t support you enough in your call to arms for everyone to purchase anti-virus software and scan their systems. Frequently.
Thanks again, and good day!
…what Bush says he did to Iraq.
(sorry… couldn’t resist)
thanks for mentioning that. the threat is ongoing, although MSN/Hotmail finally got their a/v farm back up yesterday afternoon.
if yall want to know what’s going on, my diary is posted here. it deals specifically with the email issue that’s ongoing, but with the amount of traffic this damned virus is generating, i’m not suprised that we are starting to see lag time on other services. in fact, i’m supposed to be off work today but i’m still online monitoring our email farm.
ug, what a week.
Thanks for posting, good info. I’m on leave from my e-mail admin job and I feel your pain.
Still no dkos.
Yup–takes forever, but get page not available.
No announced “upkeep”?
Mac using Firefox
Cannot get dkos for hours now. Booman would not come up ealier but no problems now. I am tech illiterate so will be of no other help. Sorry.
By the way….good morning all. Hope you all have a pleasant weekend. Go UCLA Bruins. Kick some Trojan butt today!!!!
Yup, I can’t get into dK and SP at all. Haven’t tried MLW yet. BT is REALLY slow… At least I can get my email. Thanks for the heads-up!
I am running IE on a PC.
My theory as to why BT is so slow is that thousands of Kossacks are coming over here to find out what’s going on. It’s what I did.
Probably not. Just checked the site meter, and traffic seems only a little higher than a normal Saturday morning. The site has handled considerable higher volume without noticably slow-down.
Another beautiful theory slain by ugly fact…
oddly, I checked the dkos sitemeter and it is recording traffic right now. That puzzled me, cuz I was assuming the server was down, and obviously it’s not. My pings came back with an average of 279ms, which is faster than my pings to eurotrib or BT.
11:22am:trecko:/home/riotgrrl> telnet http://www.dailykos.com 80
Trying 69.9.161.200…
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused
That’s a long time to effect a fix. What’s causing it?
Perhaps all the wacky communication and transit problems will resolve themselves now.
What does that mean?
….it’s direct, not retrograde right? because my understanding is that when it’s retrograde, mechanical things go boom. and believe me, things have definitely been going boom over the past few days.
The planet is currently in transition & won’t have changed direction completely until after 9 pm tonight. Iirc, the greatest potentiality for Merc-influenced screw-ups is actually in the transitional period.
PS: also, iirc, the Mercury influence — named for the celestial messenger with winged feet — has more impact on communications/travel than on the mechanical.
Since about midnite. No Kos, no SP. LSF, MLW, BMT & ET- no prob, on Mac, tried w/IE & Mozilla.
I thought they might be down for upgrade, but read something about a major virus attack. I hope they’re okay.
Can anyone contact Markos or PD & get the real story?
Daily Kos site that I am unable to access today. I think that it’s Daily Kos problem. It’s been down or at least 3 hours now.
How many daily log-ins does dKos have?
Tens of thousands? Hundreds of thousands?
Now imagine the media uproar if a newspaper with similar distribution suddenly ceased to be delivered. Or to be printed. For well over 12 hours and counting.
As of 10:45 EST…not a WORD on Google News.
Not a peep.
A “Sober” attack upon the internet?
My own e-mail delivery is down about 60% from usual.
How many millions of e-mails are sent every day now?
If the US Postal Service were to suddenly shut down 60% (although as bad as it is already, how one would tell might be a question), can you imagine the fuss?
Further…
I AM HAVING ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM ACCESSING ANY WEBSITES OTHER THAN LEFT WING ONES.
Including Booman, which has hung up about 40% of the time that I have tried to access it since about 11PM yesterday.
The execrable Drudge Report…right there, sliming my monitor.
DKos…???
Nope.
Atrios…???
Sloooow.
European Tribune…???
Nope.
Interesting…

“We must neutralize and gain control of the internets.”
BINGO!
They are already busily about their task.
Bet on it.
In overt AND covert manners. Including subtly altering the direction of the most influential left wing blogs by the use of moles. These people have TRILLIONS of dollars to spend, and an equal amount stands to be made in profit if they are successful. They are not going to go away easily, and they will use the same tactics that have gotten them into power in the first place.
Covert actions.
In a REAL crisis here, say an attempt to stampede what is left of the American sleeple (what is left after all of the bad press of the past year or so) into acceptance of a shutdown of the Constitution due to emergency conditions…a terrorist attack, a natural disaster, a natural disaster that has been helped along, Katrina style (“It’s only temporary, folks.”)… whatever parts of the internet that they considered threatening to their efforts would disappear so fast our monitors would probably implode from the cyber-vacuum that was created. They would take the WHOLE net down if they considered it profitable to do so in order to remain in power, and face the consequences later.
Badly.
JUST as they have done in Iraq.
BET on it.
Do not get too comfortably settled in here with how things are.
SOMEONE in the intel system has his hand on the switch 24/7.
Bet on it.
The only thing that is stopping them from further consolidating their power is us right now. We are shining light after light after light down their nasty little ratholes.
Us and the opposition within the PermaGov. Including Jack Murtha’s generals who think that the neo-con tactics are simply unusable and will eventually destroy us.
They say that politics makes strange bedfellows.
So does sheer survival.
Bet on it.
AG
It seems only DKos is down right now. I was able to get into MLW, DU, Americablog and Raw Story. I also checked to see if FR and RS were experiencing any problems. They are not.
BTW, my first post ever! :^>
Hey, welcome to BooTrib! You picked a nice place to join in.
Welcome, sunqueen!
You mean first post at BT?
Welcome, sunqueen212. Good to have you here with us. post more…would love to hear what you have to say.
I make the outage as having begun sometime between 10:38 and 10:51 PST Dec 2.
My traceroute takes a big dive in latency when it gets into the att.net network, dropping from 12 ms to 75-247 ms along the way. I can ping http://www.dailykos.com with a latency of 115 ms, so they are not off line, just off the air. For comparison, pinging apple.com, boomantribune.com, and google.com give 15 ms, 73 ms, and 92 ms respectively.
I’m off to look around some more.
I just tried my son’s website and it won’t come up either. Like Markos, he lives in SF. hmmm…
And, as others have pointed out, the server is responding. It’s just httpd (the Apache web application) which is not running. It may be that the server was re-booted and httpd did not come up for some reason. Possibly just a config change that was made incorrectly.
BTW, Internet Traffic Report doesn’t show anything unusual, either.
that’s killing at&t’s bandwidth right now. basically, all the large bandwidth providers are affected right now and will be for the near future.
but my webpage for myt teaching is on earthlink and comes up without any problems. And earthlink is a rather lrge bandwith provider is it not?
I have an RSS news reader up, and the last entry from Daily Kos was as follows. Interesting, given past history, that it is from Armando recommending coming over here. Time of the last posting was 10:25 PM PST, last update 1:11 (but I can’t tell what time zone that is).
Very curious is all I can say.
The same thought occurred to me since Booman and EuroTrib also went down.
Yes, what about the discombobulator, the frazzleperceptor, and that’s fine for the pinging, but what about the dinging?
Ah, Nerdspeak. Or is that Newspeak?
and things of that sort. Sorry about the frazzled discombobulation you are experiencing.
You want to know about this – really!
ping – derives from the name for a single burst of sound emitted by the sonar operator on a submarine, to see if there is a reflective object close by. You’ve seen it in WW II movies, surely? The internet equivalent is to send a single packet (which is the smallest amount of information that can be sent) to an address and ask them to answer back. When nothing else at the destination machine works, ping often does. If your ping is answered, there is a machine up at that address. If not … either they don’t answer pings, or they are dark.
latency – ping’s travel time. If it is long, there are problems. Fast close by connections will be way less than a millisecond. Since a nanosecond is a light-foot, the maximum travel time around the earth the long way should be as follows.
24000 mile * 5280 ft/mile * 1E-9 sec/ft = 0.13 sec = 130 ms
But just cross country, say 3000 miles, you should get more like 15 ms.
traceroute – uses ping in a kind of “bread crumbs” approach to marking a path. Each internet packet has a number called “time to live”. Every time a router or machine passes along the packet, the “time to live” counter is decreased by one. When the time to live is zero, the packet is not passed along anymore, and the answer back is sent from wherever the packet died, instead of the final destination. So the traceroute program sends out pings with time to live set to 1,2,3,… and reports back the “route” so discovered.
Hi all.
So glad I checked here! Haven’t been able to get to dkos or SP all day, but no problem with eurotrib. I wasn’t sure if kos’s server was down or just being blocked here. (There are certain websites I can’t get to from my ISP, mainly US military ones, and I’ve never figured out whether it’s the Egyptian govt that blocks them, the ISP or the military itself….) Also couldn’t get past the intro page at MLW, all the links just reloaded the splash. Weird.
Anyway, at least BT is still here… my first post here, btw.
oh, wait… mlw is working now.
dKOs went down for me at approximately 1:45 a.m. EST. Hasnt’ been back up since. Booman, EuroTrib, and Street Prophets were down too.
Booman and EuroTrib are back online now. MLW was functional though. Atrios and MyDD were very slow to load, but functional too.
In diary here.
This is what martial law might look like. First they’ll take down the sites.
Thanks again Susan, for your updates.
E-MAIL ME or call me — 360 417 9478
I just took down the adv liberally ads … tell me now if it works okay.
Don’t talk among yourselves! I am reachable!
I think it’s the ads. It seems to be fine now?
And those ads are common to the above-mentioned sites.
Susan did you seriously just give out your phone number to the World…yikes. I personally think the NY Times should use it, call you and hire you.
And don’t post a reply here cuz I won’t be able to check … I’m writing e-mails to other site owners .. just e-mail me or call me!
THANK YOU!!!!!!!
(And say hello to our new advertiser, NETFLIX! THEY ARE A BLUE COMPANY!)
Had trouble logging on to Michigan Liberal, so I gave up on it!
At a public website/library. Seems to be running awfully slow. Assumed one of the local teenagers got bored…
