[From the diaries by susanhu.]
Why does the press ignore conclusive hard evidence of widespread torture and murder? As we strive to keep the pressure on our governments and media we cannot allow them to do this, to ignore the obvious.
On October 25, 05 the American Civil Liberties Union released an analysis of new and previously released autopsies obtained under the freedom of information act and death reports of detainees held in U.S. facilities in Iraq and Afghanistan, many of whom died while being interrogated. The documents show that detainees were hooded, gagged, strangled, beaten with blunt objects, subjected to sleep deprivation and to hot and cold environmental conditions. *According to the documents, 21 of the 44 deaths were homicides. *
A CommonDreams.org article by Peter Phillips takes the corporate media to task for failing to cover this story, “at least 95percent of the daily papers in the US didn’t bother to pick up the story”.
More below
From the ACLU press release (which also links to the documents) :
While newspapers have recently reported deaths of detainees in CIA custody, today’s documents show that the problem is pervasive, involving Navy Seals and Military Intelligence too.
Below are the gory details:
· A 27-year-old Iraqi male died while being interrogated by Navy Seals on April 5, 2004, in Mosul, Iraq. During his confinement he was hooded, flex-cuffed, sleep deprived and subjected to hot and cold environmental conditions, including the use of cold water on his body and hood. The exact cause of death was “undetermined” although the autopsy stated that hypothermia may have contributed to his death. Notes say he “struggled/ interrogated/ died sleeping.” Some facts relating to this case have been previously reported. (In April 2003, Secretary Rumsfeld authorized the use of “environmental manipulation” as an interrogation technique in Guantánamo Bay. In September 2003, Lt. Gen. Sanchez also authorized this technique for use in Iraq. Although Lt. Gen. Sanchez later rescinded the September 2003 techniques, he authorized “changes in environmental quality” in October 2003.)
· An Iraqi detainee (also described as a white male) died on January 9, 2004, in Al Asad, Iraq, while being interrogated by “OGA.” * He was standing, shackled to the top of a door frame with a gag in his mouth at the time he died*. The cause of death was asphyxia and blunt force injuries. Notes summarizing the autopsies record the circumstances of death as “Q by OGA, gagged in standing restraint.” (Facts in the autopsy report appear to match the previously reported case of Abdul Jaleel.)
· A detainee was smothered to death during an interrogation by Military Intelligence on November 26, 2003, in Al Qaim, Iraq. A previously released autopsy report, that appears to be of General Mowhoush, lists “asphyxia due to smothering and chest compression” as the cause of death and cites bruises from the impact with a blunt object. New documents specifically record the circumstances of death as “Q by MI, died during interrogation.”
· A detainee at Abu Ghraib Prison, captured by Navy Seal Team number seven, died on November 4, 2003, during an interrogation by Navy Seals and “OGA.” A previously released autopsy report, that appears to be of Manadel Al Jamadi, shows that the cause of his death was “blunt force injury complicated by compromised respiration.” New documents specifically record the circumstances of death as “Q by OGA and NSWT died during interrogation.”
· An Afghan civilian died from “multiple blunt force injuries to head, torso and extremities” on November 6, 2003, at a Forward Operating Base in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. (Facts in the autopsy report appear to match the previously reported case of Abdul Wahid.)
· A 52-year-old male Iraqi was strangled to death at the Whitehorse detainment facility on June 6, 2003, in Nasiriyah, Iraq. His autopsy also revealed bone and rib fractures, and multiple bruises on his body. (Facts in the autopsy report appear to match the previously reported case of Nagm Sadoon Hatab.)
Almost as shocking is how the media ignored this. From CommonDreams.org :
Additionally, ACLU reports that in April 2003, Secretary Rumsfeld authorized the use of “environmental manipulation” as an interrogation technique in Guantánamo Bay. In September 2003, Lt. Gen. Sanchez also authorized this technique for use in Iraq. So responsibility for these human atrocities goes directly to the highest levels of power.
A press release on these deaths by torture was issued by the ACLU on October 25, 2005 and was immediately picked up by Associated Press and United Press International wire services, making the story available to US corporate media nationwide. A thorough check of Nexus-Lexus and Proquest electronic data bases, using the keywords ACLU and autopsy, showed that at least 95percent of the daily papers in the US didn’t bother to pick up the story. The Los Angeles Times covered the story on page A-4 with a 635-word report headlined “Autopsies Support Abuse Allegations.” Fewer than a dozen other daily newspapers including: Bangor Daily News, Maine, page 8; Telegraph-Herald, Dubuque Iowa, page 6; Charleston Gazette, page 5; Advocate, Baton Rouge, page 11; and a half dozen others actually covered the story. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Seattle Times buried the story inside general Iraq news articles. USA Today posted the story on their website. MSNBC posted the story to their website, but apparently did not consider it newsworthy enough to air on television.
The ACLU continues the fight against torture. From the BBC :
It is acting for a man allegedly flown to a secret CIA prison in Afghanistan. <snip>
“The lawsuit will charge that CIA officials at the highest level violated US and universal human rights laws when they authorised agents to abduct an innocent man, detain him incommunicado, beat him, drug and transport him to a secret CIA prison in Afghanistan,” the ACLU said in a news release.
The release identified the jail as the “Salt Pit”.
Bravo for the ACLU. Let’s support them and keep the pressure on our media and political leaders. We cannot allow Bush and the rest of his neo-con bastards to get away with this.
The DNC has a handy form so you can write letters to the editors of your local and regional papers. This might be a good time to give it a try. (thanks TeresaInPa). Here’s the link.
Update: I have an idea; many journalists and Hill-staffers read blogs. Suppose everybody who reads this writes at least one torture related diary this week? A lot of folks in the press and on the Hill would see the attention the issue gets in the blogosphere. Lets make it Stop Torture Week. What do you think?
Note: All bold is mine.
Please write a letter, make a call, or donate to the ACLU.

Also cross posted on European Tribune.
Excellent post, Chris. It still shocks me to the core to know that my country has become so craven as to use torture as a commonplace policy.
I also bopped on over to Dkos and recommended you over there. We can’t write and scream enough about this.
It hasn’t become craven….that would be an improvement.
It has become fascist. This is a fascist nation. These “soldiers” are just like the Gestapo…no different.

Is this Whitehorse detainment the same as the South Korea Whitehorse? If so, it is no wonder that the prisoner died….During the VN era the So. Koreans were very bad critters to have to deal with the prisoners. They did infact torture the prisoners for the Americans.
Great article and thanks for posting.
and Everyone Else have Always Ignored what is Really going on, just ask any Very Active Activist or NGO Activist Group!
The Majority have always Poo Pooed any Activist Group trying to be heard!
They use Words, and Actually believe them, to Describe themselves and country, Words Alone!
Todays Reality is Bringing to the Front that which has been taking place in the Shadows and Expanding on That to Great Length’s, becoming that which We’ve Alway’s Condemned!!
And in a War/Conflict the Laws of War are known but roken with a Wink and a Nod, with only the Few being Prosecuted when Caught, covering up the majority of the Atrosities!!
a person insane. If all of Gitmo prisoners would be released tomorrow, they will all be insane. So in a sense they can never never be free again.
The same goes for the population of all US military secret prisons and all their detention centres in Iraq.
What a legacy of atrocity that GWB is leaving!
If they were all released tommorrow they would be very thankful, go back to their lives and because they are mostly not involved in the insurgency would return to their life as before.
Don’t Bet On That!!!!!
will they be able to resume their lives as before? Torture and solitary confinement are known to drive people mad. By what magic will they be grateful and not bitter?
Even a family or tribal support system will not ease their nightmares.
They would be grateful. Not grateful to the Americans just grateful I would guess.
I don’t think these people would be dangerous. That’s all I’m saying let them go, get out of Iraq. The world will not come apart.
I agree that these broken people will not be dangerous. I missed your point. Yes, let them be free to salvage what’s left of their lives.
I always have to circle the diaries on torture a bit before being able to read them as I know it’s going to cause problems for me. These stories and diaries always make me literally sick to my stomach on the heels of a almost overpowering anger at what is being done in our name by bushco. The ramifications of this in the immediate sense is that some people are dying, some may be permanently physically maimed, then there is the mental states where this can only linger for years maybe a lifetime to have to remember and try to either forget or rise above and I haven’t even begin to mention what it will do to our troops who are either participating or bystanders in this whole mindset where torture is being seen as ok. How this will effect them once they are home and supposed to be ordinary civilians again. To say nothing of our standing on the world stage(although I don’t think we have much of a standing anymore on the world stage) where all countries seem to know what is happening except people here in the US.
It’s certainly no surprise that the MSM continues to ignore torture/murder while it’s happening right under their noses and ours..and certainly by this time everyone with half a brain would realize this is NOT a ‘few bad apples’-god I hated that phrase/excuse.
Like the whole merc contractors in Iraq the torture and murder being done by our own troops is just the tip of the iceberg of what is now considered normal operating procedure apparently..not only normal but sanctioned and allowed to flourish under bushco.
The only way these stories are going to be told is through the investigative bloggers and the internet community who will hopefully make sure this is not swept under the rug and hidden away as if it hasn’t or isn’t happening. That and with the help of organizations like the ACLU and HumanRights watch groups we have an obligation to make sure these stories see the light of day.
