I’m glad to be back and I know Susan needs a break. Of course, one side effect of being off-line for so long is that I have no idea what is going on, ergo, I have nothing especially interesting to say. I also have a gazillion emails and a bunch of meta issues to contemplate, and nowhere near enough energy to tackle any of it.
For now I have only one thought on the donnybrook. I fully support Susan’s decision making. And I hope she can get a few stress free days in a row now.
Welcome back.
I’ve been here off and on the entire time and I have no idea what happened. I tend to be oblivious in those matters. I trust everyone to work out situations without me when they’re none of my business.
Good to see you posting again. We need help fixing this broken world.
Yep.
I had to look up donnybrook …
n. An uproar; a free-for-all. See Synonyms at brawl.
[After Donnybrook fair, held annually in Donnybrook, a suburb of Dublin, Ireland, and noted for its brawls.]
Nice word choice, Boo!! I love learning new ones and playing around with the old ones as well! 😉
And some synonyms:
affray, altercation, argument, altercation, battle, battle royal, beef, bickering, blowup, bone, brannigan, brawl, broil, brush, clash, controversy, crusher, debate, disorder, disagreement, dispute, donnybrook, dustup, exchange, face-off, falling-out, feud, fight, flap, fracas, fray, free-for-all, fuss, gin, go, hassle, hoedown, knockdown, melee, out, quarrel, rhubarb, riot, romp, row, ruckus, ruction, rumble, rumpus, run-in, scene, scrap, scuffle, shindy, spat, squabble, static, stew, tiff, tumult, uproar, words, wrangle
And a few more….
break, bump, collision, concussion, conflict, confrontation, crash, discord, discordance, disharmony, embroilment, encounter, engagement, fracas, fray, impact, jam, jar, jolt, jump, melee, misunderstanding, mix up, opposition, rift, row, rumpus, run-in, rupture, scrap, scrimmage, set-to, shock, showdown, skirmish, smash, wallop
What are your favorite(s)??
Myself, I’m going with shindy (though I may have to go look that up too!!) and RUMPUS! — I have loved that word since I was 4….as in:
Let the wild rumpus begin!!
I knew there was pie involved.
Aren’t some of those delightfully strange?
Anyone know the origins of “branigan”?
One who is looking up words to use in his/her dissertation.
-BC
Hey now! Oh, wait, I asked for this, didn’t I?
😉
Ok, now, becuase I am an eccentric of the completely words-smithy sort, I will have to find a way to work braingan in there somewhere — hell with 300+ pages, I think I should be able to, right? Or, maybe I will concetrate on rumpus!
BRAIN-gan — lololol!
Ok, I’m going to stop now — thanks, BC, I will be sure to get right back to the diss writing….tomorrow!
Once upon a time, houses sometimes had rumpus rooms, which later morphed into rec rooms, into family rooms, and are now, I think, so-called great rooms.
PS:
Here is the definition, btw:
bran·ni·gan
n.
A noisy or confused quarrel.
A drinking spree; a binge.
It’s an Irish surname.
And there are very few Scots or Irish surnames which have not been utterly synonymous with “all comers duke-out” at one time or another.
LOL…I was thinking it must mean something like brouhaha, but I see that is not even on the list! 🙂
I think the difference between a brouhaha and a brannigan is, a brannigan is a brouhaha with fisticuffs involved.
It’d be a good question to send to the people at Says You!, where they use “What’s the difference . . . ” questions on a regular basis — like, “What’s the difference between a goombah and a palooka?”
tells me that the newspaper account of a proper Irish wedding (or funeral, or bar Mitzvah, or — well, you get the idea) begins, “Among the injured were . . . “
I do not come over here very often, so I have no idea what’s going on, either.
I’m chewing on David Sirota and the consequence of American immorality equaling toughness. In my mind it’s not the interpretation if immorality as being being tough, it’s the willingness to be labelled evil and bloodthirsty and yet still keep up with the policy.
That Bush, he heard ten Marines got killed and then went right out and got all sunny on the economy. He knew ten families had just been blown apart and ten lives directly ended because of his actions, but the tough guy doesn’t care.
Perhaps that’s it. I dunno–the tough guys, stony dipensers of death and cruelty. It’s not tough to me, of course, so I guess I’m a weak liberal.
ñ <–doesn’t work in the subject field.
At least it does for me . . .
However it works, it doesn’t fucking work well enough.
There are actually three ways to do it. Probably more, but these three come immediately to mind.
First, most operating systems have an application called something like “Character Map” that lets you choose non-English characters of all kinds and paste them into your text.
Second, you can install a Spanish keyboard. One of the keys in the layout maps to “ñ” but I couldn’t tell you which one.
Or you could do it the lazy way, which is what I did. You copy the “ñ” from the text of your message and paste it into the title. (Actually, I guess you could preview a message with the HTML character code, and paste the ñ from that preview into your title. That ought to work, but I haven’t tried it yet.)
Here’s a cold one for ya
Careful when you open it tho…he sometimes shakes them up
Hey Boo, be sure and send your new address to the White House so you can be sure and get your “Happy Holiday Season” card. Betcha didn’t know the Bushes hate Christmas did ya?
Welcome Home!
Hey Booman…there are some great diaries here that you missed that I am sure you will catch up on…I also recommend reading Hunters letters to a young blogger dairy that he posted yesterday as he prepares to pass the torch. Others might want to check it out to..he is a terrific writer and full of great advice.
Hunter will be the dKos FPer I miss the most. He’s an awesome writer.
his writing, his mind and demeaner, not to mention he is a good guy. What a great diary he posted. Totally Classy.
Thanks for pointing that out.
MSNBC.com has an interesting poll under Hardblogger today. The question is If the 2004 election were to be reheld today who would you vote for?
So far Bush 25% Kerry 75%…where were these people a year ago?
Standing in front of a Diebold machine in Ohio.
Isn’t that the truth! If it wasn’t so sad it would be funny!
Yup.
See? It just did it again! Don’t tell me I’m crazy, I saw it with my own eyes. I saw it change back to Bush after I selected Kerry on the touchscreen. That’s 5 times in a row and now….hey, the screen went blank. I didn’t get to change it back.
Well, ok, but what’s a provisional ballot?
Welcome back BooMan! Glad you’re here. I hope that your move was okay. Nothing much has been going on here. Nothing at all. Really.
