I swear this is my last post of the day. Really. I just want to say, looks like we have Steph to kick around on Survivor for a while longer. She was nicer tonight, though, now that horrible Jud is gone. Isn’t it amazing to see the whole jury be men? I’d like Rafe or Lydia to win. Who do you want? Wait. If you answer that I’ll need to come back and read it and then I might comment again. . . .I’m leeeavving now.
Well, nothing to do with her directly. Boran was the dominant team in Survivor 3 (Africa) where Ethan became the ultimate survivor. Along with blogging, Survivor is something that I’m a little obsessed with. (I’ve applied twice)
You’ve applied twice! Oh, man, that would be sooo much fun, to have our very own Froggie Survivor contestant. What’s it like to apply? And are you going to keep trying?
You complete an application and a video. They recieve 50,000 to 80,000 of them so most people never hear a thing. That was so in my case, but making the video was fun. We did my last video in the style of a campain commercial.
Apparently there is a formula, a few good looking young people, a crazy guy and the token old guy/gal. I probably don’t fit well into any of those, me being a 48 year old sex god. 😉
Well, see, then here’s what you need to do. For your next video, get up on an altar, strike a pose, and have a few good looking young people, and a token old guy/gal worshiping you. Then they could put you in the “crazy guy” slot. I bet you’re wondering why you didn’t think of this before!
It’s still early out here…but actually may turn in early since I have to be showered and dressed by 8am in case the IKEA guys show up that early. (Actually would like it if they would show up that early, as that would give me an opportunity to go out and play for a bit.)
Spouse is also tired…had a busy day today. Tomorrow we hope to go out and see some holiday lights — there’s a display at a local county park that’s really cool, all sorts of animated displays. You drive through with the headlights off, and tune the radio to a low-power station that plays holiday music…definitely a great way to get in the spirit.
Okay, time for sign-off…hope everyone has a good night… 🙂
If any are around. S’posed to get down into the teens tonight. May not impress you northlands folks, but it is officially “colder than shit” for us Texans.
My cat Clarissa has the right idea.
Winter veggies are all tucked in with sheets and blankets out in the garden. They did OK last night (mid-twenties) but there was ice to keep them warm. Tonight is dry, clear, and colder so I’ve got my fingers crossed. Kale, chard, collards, broccoli, cabbage, snow peas. They can handle cold – but how cold? We’ll see, I guess.
we had a freakish cold front last weekend that fried my mom’s garden, who knew that we could go from a 70 degree day to a 28 degree night? damn wacky arizona weather.
The “old” Texas houses I grew up in, which go back to the 1920’s or so, never had fireplaces. I imagine before that, they did – how else would they heat them in the winter?
But, anyway, the houses of my grandparents’ time – no fireplaces, but designed for ventilation. Pier and beam, off the ground. No basements, of course. Sash windows – lots of them – that opened at the top and bottom and reached from about six inches above the baseboards almost to the ceiling.
I live in a 1980’s era suburban cookie-cutter mass developer house. Fireplaces seem to be standard issue now. But the windows are too high off the floor and just open on one side. Dumb, dumb, for any place that gets really hot. Off course, we’re just supposed to run the AC 24/7, so who needs ventilation? Bah.
Where Connecticut Dems Scratch That Progressive Itch
It is a Connecticut spinoff of My Left Wing. I figured with the ’06 elections coming up I would start dedicating a little more effort in paying attention to the local politics.
I have Nancy Johnson (R) as my congressional rep. Her signature legislation? Well, let’s just say that everyone should be pissed at her as they try and figure out which drug plan they need to choose now… And she was pinning her re-election hopes on that pile of manure?
At least I have Dodd in the senate, and not Lieberman! Not that I won’t actively campaign against Doh! 🙂
sorry, it’s late and my sarcasm meter is way off the chart
EYE-DEE-TEN-TEE = I D 10 T = IDIOT
We use it frequently at work when someone is having a computer problem that requires something simple to fix it like turning on the monitor or somethin’
Yeah, freezing and then some. Won’t be as cold today, thankfully. This morning got to wake up to just below zero (fahrenheit) temps. And with the dusting of snow we got, I swear the area reminded me of and felt like Gallup, NM.
I drive thru Albuquerque every December on the way to So.Cal. to visit family for the holiday season. The two areas I have to be most concerned with are around Albuquerque thru around the continental divide and around Flagstaff, AZ. Otherwise, it’s a pleasant drive. I love the mountains, and I’m a fan of deserts.
In a conversation last night, I mentioned that I’m thinking about starting a blog to discuss Food related issues: control, diets, food-related illnesses (like diabetes. In a non-medical way) and in particular my experiment with not eating between meals or taking seconds. It would be a place for people to touch base on a daily (or more often) basis with other people who are struggling with the same issues.
The problem is a name and a URL. I was thinking about justfortoday.com, but that is taken and so are all the other ways of spelling it. But, when you search on the phrase it is very closly linked to AA. And so, even if it was available, I think that might confuse people about the mission of the sight.
We had one suggestion last night. But, since I couldn’t type it twice in a row without misspelling it, I don’t think it would work.
I’m giving it a lot of thought, but if you think of the perfect title, I’d sure like to hear about it.
How about something like “DietsForToday”? That would pick up your just for today theme but also suggest other issues about food choices and food management. (Note: there is a http://www.dietfortoday.com but no http://www.dietsfortoday.com)
Diet or diet as a word isn’t a bad idea. But, it’s misleading for the audience I’m aiming at.
As commonly used, a diet is a temporary state (of course it isn’t really), when people are really referring to a “reduced calorie diet” or some other variation.
Which reminds me. My grandmother used the phrase reducing: “Have you been reducing?”. I think in discussing the weight-loss mission, I’ll use that term.
But, I’m thinking of more long-term management issues. Because at some point we will all have to stop reducing and start maintaining.
And that is the second mission of the blog — to support maintenance issues.
in the broader sense of the word (e.g., a healthy diet) rather than dieting. But probably more people take the way you are thinking.
But I kind of like the multiple meanings of some word plus “for today” — like “eating for today” (but that would probably attract epicures) — because you’ve got to be conscious of what you do every day but also today is always the day when you have to plan for every tomorrow. Or something like that. Or not.
I thought about it on the way to work and I’m liking the dietsfortoday name. Because:
1 – It leaves room for the evolving nature of diet through life.
2 – Just because common usage has shortend the phrase “weight-loss diet” or “reducing-diet” to simply “diet” doesn’t mean that it’s correct.
3 – I wouldn’t at all be trying to force any particular diet. So this is the place where we can talk about our “diets”, how they work or don’t work for us.
4 – I do like the “for today” thing being worked in.
well there’s always small dogs trying to function in the snow — especially if you go out and get a nice picture of the indignities being visited upon her.
Though I think it still would be good to get other ideas. We’ve got a lot of creative people hanging around.
A lot of controlled eating (since we’re avoiding the “d” word) involves planning, especially during times of year when there’s a lot of temptation (parties, goodies, etc.). Even with your “just for today” line, that involves planning to make sure you get enough nutrition during your meals so that you don’t send your blood sugar on the Giant Dipper roller coaster.
My basic goal for the holiday season is to not gain weight — I’ve been fluctuating but still hanging around the starting point — so that after the holidays, I can pick up where I left off. 🙂
I don’t know, it sounds more like your idea is a support for healthy living idea, with the exercise, the not snacking, (my own personal tip is to shop the perimeter of the grocery store, and avoid the aisles so you miss all the prepared foods), etc. But diabetes is an epidemic in this country, so I don’t think the shugga idea is such a bad thing. Most people have no idea what all the HF corn syrup they ingest is doing to them…

I’m sitting here waiting for IKEA to show up; the rest of the living room is still a mess but at least the area where they can put the bed stuff is clear! We’ll just have to step around/over the crap for about a week. Hope they show up relatively early (they’ve got a 4 hour window, 8 – noon); I’d like to spend sometime outdoors. Temperatures are supposed to be in the low to mid 60’s here, quite pleasant. (I’m trying not to gloat when I read about all your massive snow storms…)
ummm. Coffee. Just in time!
I swear this is my last post of the day. Really. I just want to say, looks like we have Steph to kick around on Survivor for a while longer. Rafe, Lydia, or Danni, the girl from Tongie — I’d be happy as hell if any of them won.
Danni should win, or…me. You do realize where the boran in boran2 comes from? The first to correctly answer wins immunity for the entire tribe.
A test, at 10:30pm?
Name, Boron, Symbol, B. Atomic number, 5, Atomic weight, 10.81. Density @ 293 K,

Well, nothing to do with her directly. Boran was the dominant team in Survivor 3 (Africa) where Ethan became the ultimate survivor. Along with blogging, Survivor is something that I’m a little obsessed with. (I’ve applied twice)

‘Night, all. Depending on your part of the world, of course.

I’m fading fast — just hanging to hear how boron2 could win survivor.
I can’t wait to find out how you like the sleep number bed. I just assumed they were hooey. And I’m happy to hear they aren’t.

I’m on the front page of My Left Nutmeg… with my Anne Coulter diary!
WTF were they thinking? lol
I love the site motto over there, I think I woke up my roommate from laughing.
Yeah… It is pretty funny.

I really like that it is being pointed out that there are differing opinions and then there is simply the spreading of hate.
It was a little odd seeing an AP reporter actually picking up on that theme and, in that way, bashing Coulter.

Anywho, carry on. I am sleeeeeepy.
All right, all right, I changed the wording ever so slightly. I still liked the original thought. 😉
let’s play “Would you rather?”
Would you rather…
-members debate the jacked up comments made by the Heritage Foundation
or
-the other option that involves the possibility of flaming fire
while the latter could provide for fresh smores, I would rather wake up tomorrow reading about people’s take on Hummer-driving fascists
🙂
I’ll play. Quite obviously the first option. Please send all flames to Hummer-driving fascists. My treat.
Before I forget: “happy holidays”
or a couple of my favorites: “Bah Christmas” “Merry Humbug”
and a “Flying Spaghetti Monster bless us, everyone” to you
is it freezing in the panhandle? we’re pretty chilly here in tucson, surprisingly
Yeah, freezing and then some. Won’t be as cold today, thankfully. This morning got to wake up to just below zero (fahrenheit) temps. And with the dusting of snow we got, I swear the area reminded me of and felt like Gallup, NM.
I remember getting caught in a snowstorm off I-40 in the Sandia Mountains by Albuquerque, I couldn’t believe NM had such crazy weather.
I drive thru Albuquerque every December on the way to So.Cal. to visit family for the holiday season. that’s why I live here and not in Norman anymore 🙂
It’s time for sleep now, have a good night and I’ll see you around tomorrow. Paz
When it’s pitch dark outside?
Jim has a snow day. We got 8 inches but the big problem isn’t the amount of snow but that it’s very windy and the snow is making big drifts.
He’s a teacher, right? They shut down the schools here, but because of the cold, not the snow. The roads are pretty clear now. (1.0 at 6:20)
But, the library is open today and I’ve got to leave in a 1/2 hour.
Lucky Jim (!!)

Should it be that closely linked to the diabetes issue? Should it be two blogs?

It looks like we’ve got the makings of a poll?
How horrible is it that I could have a knot around my heart at all with such wonderful and generous friends? Thank you so much.
Yes! I like the recipe idea. Could I have multiple front-pagers? Or would it have to be just me?
And It would be wonderful if we got enough ideas that we could post a poll.
I’ll ask for ideas in today’s cafe…it’s a snow day here! I have the better part of 6 inches of fresh powder outside…time for a cabin picture, I think…
I’ve got a teacher at home (we got 8″) — I take it you’ve got the students. Maybe we could make them go in a room together and do lessons so they won’t bother us.
Ha! I sent mine out into the snow to play…can’t you do that with Jim? 🙂
The snow is so deep we have to shovel a path and bathroom for the shih-tzu, or she’ll get hypothermia from walking 10 yards…
We send the malamutt out first — she loves the snow and goes bounding all over the place, leaving nice paths for the other two dogs.
You’re lucky! My Aussies are hoppers, so they don’t leave enough of a path for little miss four-inch legs…
last year we got 24 inches (a once in lifetime event I hope) — she went out and started trying to plow through and after about 5 feet there was so much snow in front of her and behind her that she was basically stuck and we had to go dig her out.

Yes, that’s what awaits those who don’t abide by the Pond’s rules…
That could be one ‘gig’ that none here would want

Seriously, they look delicious.
Proof that a really good food porn photgrapher can make almost anything look really delicious.
Yeah. It’s leaving me thoroughly conflicted between hunger and conscience.
Oh, right, like that’s a real choice. 🙂

My relaxed sister called!! We’re going to meet at Nordstrom’s for lunch and buy makeup (I don’t have any makeup & she needs some also).
That knot around my heart totally loosened when she called!
Now the only issue is finding the time to frame the photo — but I’m sure we can do that either later this afternoon or in the morning!
so you’re going to emulate sis and relax, right?
Probably, Yes — yes!

today or is it time to open up the morning Cafe?
I’m sitting here waiting for IKEA to show up; the rest of the living room is still a mess but at least the area where they can put the bed stuff is clear! We’ll just have to step around/over the crap for about a week. Hope they show up relatively early (they’ve got a 4 hour window, 8 – noon); I’d like to spend sometime outdoors. Temperatures are supposed to be in the low to mid 60’s here, quite pleasant. (I’m trying not to gloat when I read about all your massive snow storms…)
I’m lazy, waitin’ till we hit 100…
well then here’s 93, or close to it.
if we bust 100 I’ll reward you with a photo
