After the Sept. 11th terrorist attacks, Mohammed Irshaid and many other people in this country were arrested and thrown into prison cells for no other reason than they were of Arab descent.
Irshaid is a middle-aged man with a wife and three young children.
After the attacks, bumper stickers appeared on many vehicles with the phrase “We stand united.”
And for the briefest moment of time after the attacks, the entire world stood as one.
I know. I took it upon myself to email the embassies and consulates of more than 100 countries to thank them for their support for the United States. Call it personal diplomacy. Call it quixotic. Call it what you will. To me it seemed like the right thing to do, like writing thank you notes to those who signed the guest book at a family member’s funeral. And almost all of the people in the United States seemed united for the briefest of time too. (With the exception of the American haters like Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, and their ilk.)
I traveled to NYC two weeks after the attack. The New York Times had written an editorial saying if people wanted to help, what New York needed was tourists. That the city’s waiters, hotel housekeepers, retailers, etc. were facing layoffs because of the dearth of the city’s tourist trade.
So I went. I’ve mentioned before how much I loved New York City from afar and how Ms. Carnacki and I had spent our honeymoon there.
I looked up an old friend to see her for myself even though I knew she was OK. I went to the Jekyll & Hyde Club and tipped too much and bought T-shirts for the kids and spent more than I could afford because when something bad happened to one of us, it happened to all of us.
United we stand.
And you saw it with the regular New Yorkers. I walked every where and New Yorkers were friendlier than ever, people on a crowded Chinatown street corner applauded the police arresting a man and people opened doors for one another.
Of course, some of that fades naturally with time after any event.
And the government began locking up innocent people like Mohammed Irshaid.
And we saw how George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Karl Rove and others saw the event as an opportunity for partisan political gain.
We saw their use of the fear felt by many to push their agenda that had nothing to do with making America safer, but everything to do with enriching themselves, their friends and their consolidation of power.
We saw how they played up the irrational fears of terrorists so that a nation that once knew the only thing it had to fear was fear itself was told to fear everything.
And we saw “We stand united” bumper stickers appear on vehicles every where and we heard if we didn’t stand by the president we stood with the terrorists.
And although I had tried to enlist in the military after Sept. 11th only to be told I was too old, I shook my head at this line of thinking in disgust.
We were still America, but we were being told to watch what we say. I had tried to enlist because it seemed like the right thing to do not because I ever thought al-Quaeda could defeat our nation. But the thinking and words I saw coming from the White House back then, that worried me. The only nation that could defeat America was America.
The “We stand united” stickers now make sense to me.
And it’s a litmus test that separates the right from the left in this country.
To those on the left, “United we stand” means when something terrible happens to one of us, it happens to all of us be it the illegal detention of an Arab, an unjust invasion of Iraq, or a failure to help those trapped by the floodwaters from Hurricane Katrina.
To the Bush supporters, “We stand united” is a requirement for everyone. They want us all to march in lockstep with them. And they want to be part of a united crowd because they are fearful of those on the outside — be they Arabs, Mexicans, gays, people of different cultural values. They fear the future.
They are frightened children willing to surrender all that America once claimed to stand for in order to save themselves from threats that exist only in their imaginations.
The Bush supporters want us to stand behind an imperial presidency. They want us to stand aside to allow the trampling of the Constitution. They want us to stand silent at the illegal detention of Mohammed Irshaid and others.
I don’t stand for that and I never will.
Cross posted.
Just read it ‘over there’ with all the comments.
Thank you.
We stand united, against fascism.

My disgust for Governor George Bush came about when I heard him speak on Justice, the death penalty and unpardoned execution before Election 2000.
Q: Are you proud of the fact that Texas is number one in executions?
BUSH: No, I’m not proud of that. The death penalty is very serious business. It’s an issue that good people obviously disagree on. I take my job seriously, and if you think I was proud of it, I think you misread me, I do.
I was sworn to uphold the laws of my state. I do believe that if the death penalty is administered swiftly, justly and fairly, it saves lives. My job is to ask two questions. Is the person guilty of the crime? And did the person have full access to the courts of law? And I can tell you, in all cases those answers were affirmative. I’m not proud of any record. I’m proud of the fact that violent crime is down in the state of Texas. I’m proud of the fact that we hold people accountable. But I’m not proud of any record, no.
Fear for Muslim extremism has never been part of my thinking, even after the 911 attacks. Justice combined with Human Rights is a beacon of hope for freedom loving people around the globe.
Under leadership of our disaster President, our nation and American Democracy were shipwrecked in all aspects of the U.S. Constitution.
All our allies have been rebuked, insulted and in turn have reciprocated by turning their backs on this administration. The U.S. financial debt and the poor image in the world, will be desastrous for American corporations to participate in economies outside North America.

How different America was viewed 100 years ago, as immigrants traveled through Ellis Island and U.S. Immigration.
“Treason doth never prosper: what’s the reason?
For if it prosper, none dare call it treason.”

Shouldn’t this standard be applied to Luis Posadas Carriles
and I stand with you Carnacki, proudly. I get very choked up thinking of that tragic day and how we all grieved for our country and the people we lost. It changed my perspective and I left an island I loved but knew it was time to come back to the mainland and be closer to family and comorades. Little did I realise how united we would really need to become to fight the enemy. Oh, not the enemy that took down the Twin Towers…the enemy within that allowed it to happen. The enemy within our very own Democracy that would tear away at all the Constitutional liberties we have taken for granted for far too long.
Now is the time to stand United to let the Fascists that took over our country and destroyed Iraq that we will NOT let them have their way any longer. We NEED each other more than ever if we are to truly stand United again, One Nation of the people, for the people, by the people.
Thank you for this most meaningful diary. Recommended here and over there.
Thanks. Save room in the foxhole for me. We’ll have a great bunch to share it with.
We’ll stand together…
Vote: Hell no…
Recommended here and there….
Thank you for your diary & excellent poll, Carnacki.
As I’ve shared elsewhere before: on the evening of 9/11, a small group of us sat in a Brooklyn kitchen & shared the perception that the Bush administration would take the events of the day as an utter carte blanche. ‘They’ll do whatever they want now,’ we said. The WTC site still burned, filling the air with foul, oily smoke; we’d located & comforted many of those we cared for throughout the day, though some were still unaccounted for; we were beginning to relax in confidence that the attack was over, but lingering doubts persisted. The city was in the process of lockdown: in the following days it would be difficult to move around the lower part of the island & exit or enter the city.
In the meantime, we were forced to withstand Giuliani’s continual reminders to spend money whenever we found ourselves near a television. Coupled with this were the absolutely infinite replays of the day’s most horrific events, which had begun broadcast almost immediately after the attacks.
In essence, in terms of our psychic and practical well being, we were actually quite on our own, functioning as best we could under acutely surreal circumstances, thrown from our moorings into an entirely unfamiliar place.
I’m now of the opinion that this particular state of being — the tension, the underlying fear, the adaptation to severe restriction in autonomy & the primary concentration on the most basic means of survival — is what the administration would like to see on a national basis, for every one of us, for the foreseeable future. To bring this particular dystopia into being, it seems apparent that they’ll go to any conceivable lengths.
This is something I simply will not forgive or forget.
WW, Thank you.
it seems apparent that they’ll go to any conceivable lengths
If I told the lengths I think they’re willing to go, I’d probably be seen as the biggest tin foiler on this board.
Tin foil or no (& I’m sure there’s plenty to go around), I think it’s absolutely crucial that we understand what it is we’re actually dealing with in the current administration. Personally, I consider them foreign occupiers: their conception of ‘governance’ is truly foreign to me.
Thank you as well, Carnacki, for allowing me to add another piece to the picture.
Thanks Carnacki for this.
What a strange trip it’s been through the last five years. Though I wasn’t ready to join the military after 911, I sure was good at playing the outraged, patriotic American. I was angry as hell. I flew a goddamn flag on my truck for weeks for crying out loud. Sucked into the nationalism like a dutiful citizen. But it didn’t take me long to see what was really happening. Shit, I could open a tinfoil hat factory for all the shiny foil I carry around. This is what bothers me most. To me it became obvious real quik how the country was being manipulated and I could see similarities to fascist nations of the past. But it seemed that the rest, or most of us were asleep with eyes closed. Turns out that most of us are ugly and ignorant, not asleep. The old right wing saying of “America, love it or leave it” comes to mind as I think of who the real patriots are. They are us, here. the ones who see what is really happening. We are under foriegn occupation as Wilderness Wench says.
All I can tell you is that I’m ready to enlist in the force that will drive these fucks out. My children and your children are counting on us to do something.
Consider me on the team Super! I will never stop fighting these Fascists, EVER! I am learning patience in all this mess. I know getting them out of power will not be easy or come quickly. I wrote a very long email to the woman, Francine Busby, that is running for congress here in CA-50 district. Long story short, it was asking why only house parties for big contributors where the suggested donation was over $200? I asked her where she stood on every issue I could think of. I told her I felt that she was ignoring the grassroots that sure she needed campaign money but those people will write checks but not go door to door, man the phones, set up rallies, shuttle voters needing a ride to the polls.
Well she actually called me. Not a staffer but she took the time to personally call me. We talked for over half an hour and we are setting up a meeting soon. She said she could sense my passion and frustration in that email and needed people like me to help. I liked what she had to say and now have a progressive candidate to support. This was Cunningham’s district and she ran against him last time. She said the DNC all but ignored her because they said she didn’t have a chance. Well. I am going to prove those idiots wrong. I hope that directing my energies to the elections of ’06 will make a difference because without the majority we will never get anywhere. I am not telling anyone to hold their nose but to find a true progressive dem to get behind. If there isn’t one then draft one.
This is so inspiring!
Please keep us updated on how this unfolds.
Thanks…I will keep you all posted. I am motivated after talking with her to do more. I feel it is my duty to be the change I want to see….even if it is only in some small way. I take responsibility for part of our state of affairs in this country because I was the lazy, apathetic couch potato that did little more than vote these past thirty years. 2000 changed all that.
Your poll is a bit dishonest in a way… 🙂
Since it is your liberties guarenteed in the Constitution that actually protects America in more ways than many Americans realize. (Perhaps some more are realizing this now?) You can’t really trade Liberty for security.
You can trade your Liberty for a policed state. But that certainly doesn’t provide more security from the enemies that are terrorists OR the enemies of the Constitution from within the government.
The Constitution of the United States of America may not be perfect, but it is comes as close to perfect as any of the free nation’s laws when it comes to protecting our freedoms and liberties. Ignoring even a few of the liberties provided for us in the Constitution is the equivalent of sending up the white flag of surrender to both of those anti-Constitution terrorists.
Don’t be a GOP chimp-chump surrender monkey:
Impeach Bush!
