“The teams that really believe in each other understand the game is not over,” defensive player Chuck Darby said of the team’s response to the loss of Alexander and the team’s turnovers.
“If your brother went out there and fumbled the ball, go out there and get the ball back for him. Let him know we’re going to get the ball back. That’s how you win games. If you feel sorry for yourself, it’s over.”
– From “Drought is over! Team overcomes loss of Alexander, three fumbles,” Seattle Times
– Image Caption: “Two decades of disappointment dissolve into celebration at Qwest Field after the Seahawks’ 20-10 victory over Washington on Saturday.”
Words from a defensive football player — and the meaning of a victory in rain-soaked Seattle — that can inspire us Democrats. We pick up the ball. We just keep trying, and that’s how we’ll win. Here are some examples of those who are trying, and those who are challenging us to try harder. These are not self-congratulatory selections. These are slaps in the face:
Truer words (that sting): “George Bush would be in severe political trouble if there were an opposition political party in the country. Just about every day, they’re shooting themselves in the foot. The striking fact about contemporary American politics is that the Democrats are making almost no gain from this. The only gain that they’re getting is that the Republicans are losing support.” (Noam Chomsky to Geov Parrish, Alternet)
Coming up with a play: “[T]he choice George Bush will offer the nation regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions is either (a) leaky and ineffective sanctions or (b) air strikes … Maybe diplomacy will work and Iran will back down. But just in case it doesn’t, Dems would be wise to start thinking about whether (a) or (b) — or some hypothetical (c) — is the right policy. … We can gripe and complain about the perfidy of Karl Rove all we like, but it’s idiocy not to think seriously about a subject that’s at least 50% likely to be a major campaign issue. And the sooner the better.” (Kevin Drum at Wa Monthly)
Check the facts: “The Washington Post … gives major play this morning to an attack of Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.) on the website of the (until now) obscure Cybercast News Service. … [serious, detailed fact-checking by Murray Waas follows, including a scathing commentary on the poor news reporting by the Washington Post] … regarding the purported allegations by the late Rep. Saylor that Rep. Murtha did not deserve his Purple Hearts, the Washington Post is relying on the reporting of the Cyercast News Service, which is in turn is relying on comments made years ago by Harry Fox, who is in turn is quoting the late Congressman Saylor– who died all the way back in 1973. The Post should have done a much better job of making this clear in their story– in my humble opinion– if they should have even published a story at all.” (Murray Waas, at his blog, Whatever Already!)
Tom Delay is “Toast” and There’s a Dem Makin’ a Sneak Play: Suddenly yesterday the news filtered up to the great national news gatekeepers — weeks and maybe months after Texas bloggers began posting on this subject — and allowed as how Tom DeLay is losing in his own Texas District 22. Not just losing, but sinking, tanking, dying. He’s got some Republican would-be replacements running in the primary and one Republican turned Independent, but Nick Lampson, the Democrat, is polling the strongest so far for the mid-terms. (Prairie Weather blog)
The Imperial Presidency at Work … and our plan is?: “You would think that Senators Carl Levin and John McCain would have learned by now that you cannot deal in good faith with a White House that does not act in good faith. Yet both men struck bargains intended to restore the rule of law to American prison camps. And President Bush tossed them aside at the first opportunity.” (NYT Editorial)
We have lots of balls in the air. And we’ve punted too goddamn many times, dammit! Question is: Will we help our brothers? And, the thing to remember is that if the Seahawks can survive and put an end to over two decades of no playoff victories, so can we … let’s get to it!
… here’s a start …. Nick Lampson for Congress …
I’d say that, on this blog and other similar blogs, that’s the least of our problems. We are not silent.
Thing is, how do we do that?
Last night, I caught Gary Hart on C-Span2 … he kept saying, over and over, take back your party at the local, state and national levels.
Excellent advice.
The first point is that the little people need to realize that power must be paid for. If you don’t like the results of two corporately financed parties, then you have to pick one to finance yourself.
And if all you can do is give time, write, or whatever, even though it isn’t on a regular basis…at least that’s all I can do…
I truly understand what you both are getting at; however, I know, for me anyhow, I have to ascertain a louder voice. I just have to start screaming. :o) Thanks you 2..Now lets get on with the game ( I want my country back), shall we…hugs
what a great party we have championing our rights!
Well, I can’t condemn her because she’s a political survivor — she sees the writing on the wall — we lost this one — let’s go on
and why would showing leadership threaten her survival anyway?
I pretty certain if anyone comes at her here in CA, it will because of her support for the regime, no?
Alito: it’s the 4th quarter, the 2 minute clock has sounded … we’re down two touchdowns … Feinstein can do the math.
Feinstein is looking ahead to games we can win.
great. she can win a game of checkers behind the store while we lose the world series, superbowl and olympics. and the bet on all those is whether we can expect the government to spy on us, and invade your uterus.
I say enough. lets actually lose and not just give up this time. but that’s just me.
(sorry, my babies need attention and I will not be able to further respond for a while.)
I’m with you all the way … the thing is that I fear that we’d end up looking like a bunch of losers and fools, or will be portrayed as such in the press …
We don’t have even enough votes to avoid cloture.
This is the price of being completely shut out of power in D.C.
We need to focus our (flagging) energy on the battles that we CAN win (Delay, Abramoff, executive powers, torture, etc.)
I fear that we’d end up looking like a bunch of losers and fools
Nobody sitting in the ticket-holders’ line to enter the gulag looks very good.
Here it is, Susanhu.
Mr. Chomsky.
RIGHT on the case, as usual.
And why is this happening?
1-Because the corporate interests that own this country own both parties
and
2-Because those same corporate interests own the opinion forming organs of the country. The media.
Election and election finance reform coupled with a blstering attack on the media…financial and otherwise… is our ONLY WAY OUT OF THIS POSITION SAVE THE EVENTUAL TOTAL COLLAPSE OF THIS COUNTRY AND SOCIETY. Probably brought about by military and/or economic pressure brought to bear by the rest of the world.
And unless the only even SEMI-aware segment of the society…those who post on these blogs…does not quickly get to work in a grassroots-based manner on these two items, then we are as good as over.
Through.
Done.
Much more “business as usual” and the United States is over.
Bet on it.
So…when do we start?
When do we STOP waiting on a corrupt DemocRatpublican, one party system to reform itself when its very EXISTENCE is predicated on a kleptocratic mediocracy. Not a democracy ..A MEDIOCRACY. The rule of the mediocre. They tyranny of the weak.
A DEMONOCRACY as the much of the rest of the world sees it.
When do we get our asses in gear before it is indeed too late?
Here on Martin’s birthday.
From BooMan’s diary below this one on the front page:
When you are right you cannot be too radical; when you are wrong, you cannot be too conservative.- Martin Luther King Jr.
The hope of a secure and livable world lies with disciplined nonconformists who are dedicated to justice, peace and brotherhood.- Martin Luther King Jr.
All progress is precarious, and the solution of one problem brings us face to face with another problem.- Martin Luther King Jr.
Now, I say to you today my friends, even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: – ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.’- Martin Luther King Jr.
I submit to you that if a man hasn’t discovered something he will die for, he isn’t fit to live.- Martin Luther King Jr.
Yup.
I am not convinced about the non-violent thing. I wonder if Martin continued to believe as these monsters placed a bullet in his brain.
I stopped believing around that time, myself…
But by ANY MEANS NECESSARY…this has to be stopped.
When do we start the stopping?

Much more “business as usual” and the United States is over.
Bet on it.
I agree with you and that is why I feel such a sense of urgency.
But I completely disagree with any suggestion of violence … back in the late 60s I was briefly around such people, and it was appalling and ineffective then — at a time when if such tactics had any chance of effectiveness, it could have happened …
Join us to live-blog Al Gore’s speech tomorrow and let’s hope he fires us up, and that we get the word out.
I am not “suggesting” violence, susanhu.
I am simply recognizing its inevitability.
On ALL sides.
If they offed Christ, Socrates, Gandhi and MLK Jr….it is not going to change.
And yes, violence IS appalling.
Look at Iraq.
Do you think that these people can be TALKED out of their plans?
Check out my sig.
A DEMAND will have to be made.
By us or by the rest of the world.
How to make that demand?
That’s what we are discussing now.

It’s the USA that is bombing souvereign nations like Pakistan and killing innocent people all in the name of eliminating terror from the world. As if…
Yesterday I posted this response at Daily Kos to the suggestion give Alito 100-0 vote:
