[I spoke with Supersoling tonight and we are on for Sunday.
Thank you so much for your encouraging words.
Have no doubt, we take you with us. :)]
Supersoling and I are meeting on the Capitol Steps this Sunday, the 22nd, at 10:00 AM.
If any of you are able to join us, we would be delighted to have you stand with us.
If any of you are doing “stand ups” in your community or a city near you, please share your plans.
What is the point?
In 2000 my reaction to Bush’s election was along the lines of, “I can’t believe we elected this guy. Oh well, this, too, shall pass.”
But here it is, 2006. And it just keeps getting worse and worse.
I went to work on Wed., thinking (more hoping actually) that Reid’s caucus was going to be very significant. When I got home I came right here to BT to find out what had transpired.
Surely the Dems built upon Gore’s impassioned speech to declare they would not engage in any legislative work, including voting on Alito, until a special prosecutor was appointed and an investigation of Bush’s illegal wiretapping was begun. In other words, the Congressional Dems would go on strike.
Well.
So, what is the point of two people standing on the Capitol steps?
Is this the “best” use of time? Money? Energy? Is this a “good strategy?”
I don’t know.
I don’t do “street theater” and I don’t shout in public. So, for me, this is a baby step in standing up. I figure I will be called upon to do more and more public actions of one kind or another.
If you have any thoughts on what you would do if you were able to join us, please offer them. (I don’t sing in public either!)
If you can join us, please do!
Would be there if I could. You guys have a good time. Do good.
Thanks for doing this Tampopo. I wish I could join you, but alas. I must stay home and do my best to tell every democrat in the Senate that if Sam Alito ascends to the Supreme Court I will never again vote democratic. It’s all a good thing – we do what we can.
I’ll be there in spirit – definitely not singing, but dancing. Take care of yourselves and y’all have a good time, hear?
What I found to pretty effective is to get iron-on templates from an office supply place and make your own t-shirt- the unique ones get attention.
I had a a gal in a reataurant come up and ask me-(and hub) – ‘OK you guys-where did you get the shirts?’
Plenty of images to steal off the net.
You just download them and print them onto the iron-on thingy- and iron ’em on.
Go for it! Wish with all my heart I could be there. I am in spirit.
I wish my home life was a bit more stable right now and my teenager didn’t need someone constantly on hand. I admire you guys so much! Please take photos and share them when you get a chance.
(btw, the fella with the “My body, my choice” sign is a Republican-who’da thunk it?)
If my husband leaves me for a younger woman I’m gonna snap him up, but he probably isn’t available. The good ones never are!
You know, I always bitch about the old men antis who are out there harassing people at the clinic, but these guys who stand up for choice are gems.
We did this in a university town, and we were laughing at all the college boys (with girls in their cars) who were beeping like crazy…guess they were hoping to get lucky later!
I’ve got a good friend who spent years volunteering as a clinic escort. He’s really something else.
Go get em guys. I’ll be thinking of you Sunday.
GO tampopo
GO tampopo
GO tampopo
Hugs and am with you always!
Remember the protests in Mar del Plata when Bush went to Argentina? Around the same time, there ws a protest in the steps of the Congress thee, and there was a bunch of people sitting down on toilets with there pants down, shorts down to the knees.
A small group of people got inmediate national attention.
But … but … there’s a Seahawk game! Trust me: If the Giants were playing, SS wouldn’t be there …
just joshin’ — I think you are all FANTASTIC!
I wonder why it’s so hard to learn about this stuff. I thought it was for the inuaguration speech that people were organizing.
What protests are going on in chicago?
Stu – this “Stand Up” came out of Supersoling’s Diary.
So, if you feel the need to do a “Stand Up” in Chicago – go for it! (I’m not yet ready to do a one person demonstration.)
I agree with you it is hard to learn about this stuff!
If you hear of anything for the Inaugeration, please share.
BTW – your calls for hitting the streets are resonating.
Thanks.
What ever it is, count me in
There is supposed to be a huge demonstration at 9pm the hour os the state of the union speech in New York with people banging pots and pans while he speaks. There was a full page Ad in The New York Times.
I wonder whether other cities are involved.
Of course MoveOn probably isn’t supporting this…or are they?
I think it is great that they go out with pots and pans. We need a little more of that. If there is anything close to Chicago i’m in!
