Andi, do I detect your work? That is an absolutely super sign. I can’t wait to use it. π Sorry I haven’t had time to be around all day, but I’ll be here tomorrow.
Hey everyone…well hey when everyone shows up…and very cool sign we have here tonight.
I’m finally back after not being around for a bit. Tuesday’s are the days my sister comes over to take me to rent the new dvd’s that are out and that kinda throws my whole non-schedule off. Just getting out for that short amount of time usually tires me out and I end up sleeping when I get home or trying to watch one of the movies I’ve gotten.
And I’m a bit bummed out today..my best friend-who happens to be gay-which usually wouldn’t mention except in context of this post-anyway I was talking to her on messenger about how much anti-gay crap there is out there and she basically said that I was exaggerating and that in 20/30 years that will all be over and people look back at today and laugh at how stupid people were. Just like they did with prejudice towards blacks and how different it is now for them.
I think she’s living in a dream world or just doesn’t want to believe how crappy this all still is-20/30 years and all anti-gay stuff will be gone..I don’t think so.
your friend might be right — as younger gay/lesbians are coming out, people are actually meeting them and realizing there’s no big deal about the whole thing. If you look at polls, younger voters/potential voters (the 18-30 crowd) are far more open to things like gay marriage and other rights than are older voters (50+). It’s only natural that things will change as the older folks die out.
I look at my own experience; as I got to know gay and lesbians as people at college (even in the 1970s) and in the workplace, I saw them as people just like me — no big deal. But folks like my mom never met anyone who was gay, so never had the opportunity to see them for the human beings they are. On the other hand, my in-laws, of the same age range as my mom, do know several gays and lesbians, so they also know them as people, not just as “sex fiends”.
It’s education that’s going to be the key…that and joining together to stand up against those that would limit our lives in the name of religion…
I worked at a large midwest university, and was a student, over a span of almost 30 years. I noticed 3 things about grafitti in the toilets.
anti gay
anti black
virtually no antisemetic, year in and year out.
I left 5 years ago and there had been virtually no change to my eye.
Society is much more uptight and restrictive today about things that were free and open 30 years ago. Everything from entertainment to Constitutional rights. If the taliban’s fortunes continue to rise, gay tolerance could easily reverse.
Your gay friend needs to keep a weather eye out. Hint: look upwind, where the weather comes from.
Hey, all — hope everyone’s doing well. Just making a brief appearance to say hello, as I still feel like something the cat dragged in last spring & left behind the refrigerator. Snow continues to fall over our mountains after an entire day of the stuff. It’s a pleasant night, though — very serene & quiet after an entire day of fidgety feline shenanigans & far too much Alito.
I’m headed back to the crib now before I start listing dangerously to the side. Enjoy your night!
Yuck, what a day, huh? Looks like the d’s are going to cave on Alito…DINO Salazar (Co) will vote no but not filibuster. Gives me second thoughts about having supported him, although he was a second choice, in the last election…I suppose Coor’s could have been worse, although it’s difficult to tell given his voting record to date.
Thank you, dada. That image is magical, absolutely beautiful — definitely worth a last peek into the cafe’. My spirit is calmed indeed. Now to bed π
I spent a year trying for that effect, carrying a little plastic camera with me at sunset several days a week waiting for the magic moments. Often I was on my bike riding a lonely road through the mountains into the night.
The effect of red light beneath clouds is not often predictable. Obviously, you need clouds at sunset, but even then sometimes the sunset is a dud, like when there is fog or clouds below the horizon and the rays just don’t make it through.
But when it happens, it’s dazzling (as we see)! And it only lasts a few seconds, so I would study how the red light moved across the sky. It starts on the horizon away from the sun, and in a minute or two expands to fill the sky. The peak color lasts just a few seconds. Then, on the far horizon where it started, the color is already fading…
Later, later after that is my favorite time to be in the wild, when the sky is all purplish pink and land is silent.
thanks, often it takes me forever to write a single sentence, and the thought of writing a bio had me frozen, (never occurred to me to actually prepare my booman registration ahead of time knowing how i hesitate), so thought ok, bio in 10 words or less or it will never happen, i kinda like it…
Yeah, cheap cameras work great for things where I’m looking for composition rather than detail. And mine was particlarly flimsy, it finally self destructed during a great camping trip with my boys, lost some good pictures. After that I always brought a good camera – for the reliability if not the quality.
I’m strictly playtime with the camera – just snap the shots and take the film to the drug store and enjoy the prints – not at all a hobbyist.
I take alot of my pictures in the mountains of north Los Angeles county – there are easily drivable roads 45 minutes from downtown L.A. where you won’t see a soul for hours, even on a weekend. I’ve been here 15 years, and it still amazes me.
Hi maryb – I’m around for a little while. Didn’t get to watch the part 2 on PBS. My friggin printer/scanner went out and I’ve been reinstalling everything. I do love computers, but I would love to do that thing of throwing one out the window one day.
oooh really sorry about your printer — life should be easier. I don’t know if fixed my alarm problem — I redid everything and will try again tonight.
I only saw the last hour of the PBS show since I didn’t get home until almost 10:00 but I taped it so I’ll watch it on Friday when I have time. I noticed that they didn’t mention what was, IMHO, the most important consequences of the war — the founding of my hometown, St. Louis. East coasters … they see everything through an east coast lens. sigh.
East coasters … they see everything through an east coast lens. I tend to agree with that. St. Louis has such a rich history I don’t see how they could not include it. Gateway to the west.
Since I’ve started studying colonial history from a midwestern point of view (which tends to be french, spanish and indian), I’ve found myself being very impatient with traditional American history and the whole heroic conquest of the west myth. In plain point of fact, the former british colonists who became Americans were not, as a whole, very nice people. I’m convinced that their descendents are all Republicans.
Now I wouldn’t go that far ;). Probably a good majority though.
There was something I had wanted to ask you. When I lived in St. Louis I think I remember a place called Northwest Plaza – large shopping area. Is that what it was called or is it still there.
Yes, its up on North Lindbergh still, but they enclosed it a number of years ago. When you were here it was probably still open air and quite large. It’s still large, but under a roof now. I’m not sure how its doing — every couple of years I hear that its not doing as well as it was, but it always seems to be the same to me. I haven’t been there in a few years.
Nowadays, everybody is moving out to St. Charles County on the north/west and Jefferson County to the south and they are building huge shopping centers out where all the people are. And the area west of chesterfield along the Missouri river that WAS known as Gumbo flats (and was completely flooded in the flood of 93 when the levee broke) is now called “Chesterfield Valley” and is almost completely developed. It will serve them right if the levee breaks again and wipes out all those shopping centers — its a flood plain, for dog’s sake.
Hi katiebird – Sooner or later I’m going to write something on e4t if that’s all right. Don’t know what I could add, but I can always throw in encouraging comments.
In my youth I spent a summer as a Saturday night projectionist (eww, that word looks funny… I can see trouble coming already) anyway, one night we ran Blazing Saddles backwards… well, rather than describe it I’ll leave it to your imagination, but it was quite hilarious.
You’ve got me because I’m in the same boat you are on code. I did want to learn how to bold and put the box around paragraphs. And I would like to learn how to link, but haven’t found that yet.
linking is fairly easy. Ask again tomorrow when everyone is awake. You just copy the http from the screen you want to link to and put it in brackets with a word (like the word link) before it.
Photos are pretty well explained in RenaRF’s HTML 101 above. NOTE: there are some size and placement considerations that are very important so when you get ready to do pix, drop a ? in the cafe and somebody will walk you thru it.
(smile) Thanks Andi– I really appreciate that. I guess that quote about Do you regret not filibustering Thomas hit me hard. We have these tiny windows of opportunity to stop things, to make a difference and once they slide away, they’re gone forever. Like when they voted on the Iraq resolution.
We actually have a small window to stop specific events, we have an infinitely large window to change the future.
I really believe that the problem with progressives is that we got to caught up in national politics and ceded state and local control to the right. If we want to make permanent change we have to need to concentrate on the local and state level.
Only if they give them to progressive candidates, whether or not they are members of the democratic party and don’t give them to candidates who are members of the party but don’t hold progressive views.
So sorry to disagree but I can’t give my money to any program where I have no control over it.
I’ll just put my papers here. Anyone else want to join me?
I’m watching Lost but I’ll be back at the commercial.
That’s okay, I just came back from watching the Daily Show on-line.
It hardly seems fair. I only watch three shows and two of them are on opposite each other (Lost and Veronica Mars). Thanks the cosmic muffin for tivo.
Andi, do I detect your work? That is an absolutely super sign. I can’t wait to use it. π Sorry I haven’t had time to be around all day, but I’ll be here tomorrow.
I’m sure you’ve guessed I found the site on the generator blog.
Figured. Great use of it. Back to Lost now.

Thanks, chox, I needed a good laugh!
I know some will say it is not really funny, and maybe it is not to you, but I am laughing too hard to type.
I hope you got some good movies, come post about them at E4T when you get them all watched!
Well, thanks I think, that actually cheered me up a bit..anyone thinking it’s funny no matter what kinda took the edge off.

Here’s a sunset to, hopefully, calm the spirit.

Peace

Thanks again, dada, for the nice memory!
nice bio ya got there! ’bout time I came up with something cute…
thanks, often it takes me forever to write a single sentence, and the thought of writing a bio had me frozen, (never occurred to me to actually prepare my booman registration ahead of time knowing how i hesitate), so thought ok, bio in 10 words or less or it will never happen, i kinda like it…
location, location, location.
We’re just a few dozen miles south of there in the Puget Sound area and we’ve posted a few very similar scenes taken with our cheap camera.
I certainly never saw such skies in my 50 years in Ohio, including many sunsets out of sight of land on Lake Erie.

about the upcoming get-together in SoCal — told the spouse I’d already booked the trip, and he thought it was cool… π
Cali I am excited to that you will be coming and that we will meet you…so glad that you decided to make the trip.
Anybody awake?

Did you ever figure out your Ipod/alarm thing?
oooh really sorry about your printer — life should be easier. I don’t know if fixed my alarm problem — I redid everything and will try again tonight.

I’m sure I wouldn’t recognize St. Louis now. The “Chesterfield Valley” area sounds crazy. After NOLA I would be raising hell if I lived there.
Hi, yes — I’m tinkering on the computer
Hi katiebird – Sooner or later I’m going to write something on e4t if that’s all right. Don’t know what I could add, but I can always throw in encouraging comments.
You haven’t been around much lately.
I stop in here. I really do have to think about adding a refrigerator and a bar to the computer room.
Or put the computer in the kitchen
what? and eliminating eating all together?
My God you don’t already have one? Your are living bare bones aren’t you ;).
well, we try to tuff it out here in the nort’land, but every now and then we succumb.
Welcome to Conservative Correctness.
The Bellingham UHF station is running Blazing Saddles.
They’re letting the N-word through right and left. They’re censoring shi* and dam*.
Actually it’s better that way. If the n word is omitted, half the point of the movie is lost. Good job Richard Pryor!
I’ve always loved that movie and hate it when they bleep out any of it. Actually I’ve always loved just about all of Mel Brooks movies.
In my youth I spent a summer as a Saturday night projectionist (eww, that word looks funny… I can see trouble coming already) anyway, one night we ran Blazing Saddles backwards… well, rather than describe it I’ll leave it to your imagination, but it was quite hilarious.
about the same either way. Sound woulda been weird tho’.
Since its kind of empty I’m practicing my HTML
hmmm
I’m not sure what the difference is between Cite and italic
And what would I ever use
code
for?But I really like strong but how does that differ from Bold
You’ve got me because I’m in the same boat you are on code. I did want to learn how to bold and put the box around paragraphs. And I would like to learn how to link, but haven’t found that yet.
Well it’s past my bedtime – Goodnight all.
linking is fairly easy. Ask again tomorrow when everyone is awake. You just copy the http from the screen you want to link to and put it in brackets with a word (like the word link) before it.
Good night!
Read this HTML 101 for starters…very good.
Set comments to “Auto Format” [bottom of screen btwn “preview” and “post” buttons.
Some short cuts that I got from others here:
* BOLD * close asterisks get BOLD
/ italics / close slashes get italics
LINKS: [ “Boo Trib http://www.boomantribune.com“ ] Delete ” marks” close brackets, get this: Boo Trib
Photos are pretty well explained in RenaRF’s HTML 101 above. NOTE: there are some size and placement considerations that are very important so when you get ready to do pix, drop a ? in the cafe and somebody will walk you thru it.
Have fun!
Peace
Good Morning!! How’s Things?
I’m stewing about our fading filibuster chances so there’s an off-beat Just 4 Today today. I hope no one’s offended.
I admit I’ve given up any hope that the Dems will fillibuster but then again I never had much hope in the first place.
Time to switch our attention to state legislatures and get more progressives elected.
I’ll drink to that.
Thanks for the coffee. (sigh)
Cheery thought for the day: you are one day closer to retiring.
If it’s so cheery why am I so down?
Because you aren’t close enough to make up for all the other crap that is going on in the world.
Okay, so I’m not always great at the glad game. I’ve got a better one though —
you’ve done a remarkable job with Eat4Today and it is something to be excessively proud about.

I really believe that the problem with progressives is that we got to caught up in national politics and ceded state and local control to the right. If we want to make permanent change we have to need to concentrate on the local and state level.
And that’s the power of Democracy Bonds, I think.
Only if they give them to progressive candidates, whether or not they are members of the democratic party and don’t give them to candidates who are members of the party but don’t hold progressive views.
So sorry to disagree but I can’t give my money to any program where I have no control over it.
