Baby goats sort of frighten me. As a kid, my parents would take us to Grant’s Farm where you could, among other things, feed the baby goats using little baby bottles of milk. We were about the same height as the baby goats, who mobbed us and were eating at our clothes and trying to get to the bottle and we would be crying.
although this was out in the wild, mountain goats aren’t very threatened by people. They apparently know just how easily they can get away from us. The mother was completely nonplussed by us our approaching her baby.
Wonderful!
I’m guessing captivity is another story. It must be a much different matter to be in one’s element, so to speak, when confronted with the unknown.
This probably goes for any animal, human or otherwise.
I was talking out my ass because I have only encountered mountain goats in the wild. But they are so blase, I guess I find it hard to imagine them any different, although we have heard stories of people letting the goats lick the salt off their arms and getting bitten.
If you can ever get to Glacier National Park, it’s a great place for charismatic megafauna watching — moutain goats, elk, moose, deer, grizzlies, black bears.
It’s also got the highest “wow” factor of any place we have ever hiked — truly filled with places beautiful beyond words.
Thank you for the recommendation! Sounds like a truly fantastic experience — though I must say, my experience with our local bears doesn’t endear me to the idea of straying near a grizzly. Bears are just so massive — there’s such a tremendous amount of power there, so unlike any other creature’s, yet they can be completely invisible.
In any case, perhaps once I’ve shifted locales & settled again I’ll travel again 😉
I love hanging out with people who have their priorities straight. Dogs. Llamas. Dessert. Beer. And meat loaf and mashed potatoes are way up there, too.
I quit drinking years ago, so I can only dream. But I wonder how a Manhattan and mashed potatoes would be? There has to be redneck joke in there somewhere.
There are few meals that cannot be improved by the addition of cheese grits. And few movies that cannot be improved with the addition of a couple of velociraptors. This is the law.
Well, I think you may be right about lasagna and grits. Dammit. But adding velociraptors to Casablanca? I can’t stop laughing. “We’ll always have Jurassic Park.” “Here’s looking at you, k–“
Went back to leave an explanatory comment on the AlphaSmart, but the cafe had up and moved. And someone else ate all the vanilla ice cream before I got over here.
My Alphie is a lot like the earliest laptops, 20 years ago. Good for toting to places where it would be awkward, etc., for a laptop. They’re dropable, too.
The one with the larger screen is better. I got one on eBay a couple of years ago.
Hey kansas and everyone…popping in to say hi and then off to do the laundry. And I don’t know if anyone else has the margins messed up but I can’t read the comments all the way to the right?
That reducing thing has never worked for me. Drats. Well, this cafe is filling up fast. When I start the new one I’ll make sure to leave the beer out. Or at least the beer photo out. 🙂
My dog just strolled by carrying in her mouth a copy of Billy Collins book of poetry, “Questions About Angels.” Who knew a dachshund would be interested in angels?
Latest mountain weather update: it’s sure to be a chilly one tonight. Temperature was down to 12 F at sundown; the sky is clear & the winds are kicking up. I’ve had a few ‘power flickers’ in the past few minutes — best get to the fire & get started on a meal before the lights go. See y’all soon (I hope)!
Been in bed the vast majority of the day…not as fun as it sounds; I’ve been trying to sleep off a developing cold. 🙁 I’m supposed to go over to the in-laws on Saturday to help celebrate my mom-in-law’s birthday, but if I’m sick, I’ll have to send the spouse solo; February 1st is my dad-in-law’s surgery date, and I’m not going to risk passing him any narsty germs.
Maryb — did you figure out how to keep your iHome from switching to the buzzer? Haven’t had a chance to do any testing at this end yet…
Been catching up on the previous cafe(s) — wow, I missed a lot! Good to see that Kelly was able to peek his head out, and hope your Muse continues to inspire, Kansas. (My Muse seems to be on extended winter break…)
Okay, time to go peer through a few diaries, then head back to bed till hockey time…
Hey Cali, hope you feel better quickly. Well, this morning it played for 40 minutes before it beeped. Since I was up, I didn’t mind. But I still think it’s not supposed to do that.
I’ll try resetting it later. Right now I’m outta here — have theater tickets. The play is “I am my own wife” (I think that’s the name) and I’ve never heard of it. See you all later.
Busted margins got you down? Come on over to the new cafe where the margins know their place and the beer never stops flowing and the coffee never stops perking and frogs never stop talking.
Did somebody say cherry pie with ice cream?
What great service! I’m eating meatloaf and mashed potatoes right now, I’ll be ready for the cherry pie momentarily.
Not me — eat dessert first, life is short. Thanks kansas!
to help you get over no thursday dog blogging.
gee, thanks for the picture of … help me out, I’m a city girl. The face looks kind of doe like.

We did it every year. Traditions are important.
that baby mountain goat was the cutest thing I’d ever seen but from now on I’ll stick to dogs.
What a great-looking animal! With a very sweet expression (though possibly deceptive, as is sometimes true).

Just re-read your comment — you’re talking about goats’ general character. Got it.
(I’m obviously distracted by chilly-butt.)
I was talking out my ass because I have only encountered mountain goats in the wild. But they are so blase, I guess I find it hard to imagine them any different, although we have heard stories of people letting the goats lick the salt off their arms and getting bitten.
You’re fortunate — I’ve never encountered any at all!
Perhaps I will someday.

I went through there as a teenager on my way to Calgary and Banff. It was breath taking. Always wished I could go back.

Cold cherry pie for breakfast! Yum. My fav.
I’m passed the eating. I think today all that beer would be a good first round for me.
I love hanging out with people who have their priorities straight. Dogs. Llamas. Dessert. Beer. And meat loaf and mashed potatoes are way up there, too.

Manhattan and grits would be better.
I do you one better. This is really gross but Manhattan and chittlins.
You’re right — that IS pretty gross. But its a winner.
I try my humble best ;).
There are few meals that cannot be improved by the addition of cheese grits. And few movies that cannot be improved with the addition of a couple of velociraptors. This is the law.
Good Law. I couldn’t imagine lasagna & grits, but velociraptors in Casablanca – I wonder how a good writer could fit that in. hint hint:).
Well, I think you may be right about lasagna and grits. Dammit. But adding velociraptors to Casablanca? I can’t stop laughing. “We’ll always have Jurassic Park.” “Here’s looking at you, k–“
OMG that’s funny!
That’s for returning the favor. Your parting line got me laughing so hard that I know I’ll always think of that whenever I see that movie again.
Very nice. That’s actually a daquari up above, though it looks like undiluted oj. I’ll have a perfect Manhattan, bartender.
Marmotdude heard his name taken in vain in the other cafe and decided to unhibernate long enough to toast your breakthrough with a dirty marmotini.
I may need more than the hookah tonight, Marmotdude…
FSM Damned Spineless Cowards of Worthless Pile of Steaming Manure-Laden Sorry Excuse for an Opposition Party Bastards!
[deep breaths]
Okay, back to finding info on the filibuster.
Breathe deep and relax.
Yet another reminder that I picked the wrong year to get clean & sober: 1999.
A Floating Marmotdude! Marmotdude, we’ve missed you!
Have you realized that next Thursday’s cafe is groundhog’s day?
Omg, I can only imagine what you may come up with. I’m already laughing.
Oh-oh, I shouldn’t have done that. Now I’ve raised expectations and I know I’m not going to top my xmas wreath.
Cherry pie with a martini chaser. Yep. I’ll do that.
Chocolate Cake for me today….pie won’t do it…I’m going for the comfort food today…my brutal meetings went okay – just very tense.
With apologies to Katiebird and DF and all the others at Eat4Today….
BTW
Chocolate has phytoenzymes that actually work as seratonin blockers….it does make you feel better!
Oh, that cake just above. Death by chocolate!

Anybody else having margin problems?? Sorry, choc!
I think it was in the beer picture…just a guess.
If the beer pic is in photobucket – you can reduce it to 75% of existing in edit mode…it should fix it.
Or in the diary put in width=300 or something similar after the between < img____source >
That reducing thing has never worked for me. Drats. Well, this cafe is filling up fast. When I start the new one I’ll make sure to leave the beer out. Or at least the beer photo out. 🙂
My margins are okay but I refuse to read anything all the way to the right 🙂
It’s all unintelligible on the far right anyway.
My dog just strolled by carrying in her mouth a copy of Billy Collins book of poetry, “Questions About Angels.” Who knew a dachshund would be interested in angels?
My bird has been pooping all over an old Charles Krauthammer column for a couple of days. He’s a tough literary critic.
Good bird.
My monitor just happened to be lined up with this comment and I thought, What did I do?
Too funny! Life should always land you in a place where somebody somewhere is saying, “Good bird.”
I’m sure you’ve seen a dachshund leap farther from the ground than he is long. Angels are the answer 😉
I’ll be darned. But tell me that angels don’t pick them up by their ears!
Good heavens, I hope not! Or I’ll be forced to abandon my faith ..
lol! If ye had but the faith of a miniature dachshund. . .
.. I’d be far more buoyant 🙂
I love Billy Collins. Did you hear him the time he was a guest on A Prairie Home Companion?
One of my live book goups is reading Ted Kooser and I’m enjoying him too.
I missed that PHC and I would have loved to hear him. I did get to hear him live a few years ago. He was way beyond charming and sooo funny.
Ted Kooser. I am behind the times on my poet lariats (as we say out here). Gotta rope me one of his books. He is the current PL, isn’t he?

A heron bundles himself out of the wind an dsurveys the shore, shot by holding our little camera up to the eyepiece of a telescope.
What are you thinking, Mr. Byrd? What on earth are you thinking?
He’s thinking that you are a rather persistant stalke and wondering if you are going to sell these sunbathing shots to a tabloid.
