A very sick, sadistic, unnecessary aerial wolf hunt is scheduled to take place again in Alaska. I BEG YOU to sign this petition to Gale Norton, Secretary of the Interior:
“Aerial Gunning of Wolves Likely to Continue Despite Court Order.”
I lost my heart to wolves — and their remarkable lifelong family attachments — after reading Farley Mowat’s beautifully, entertainingly written Never Cry Wolf. They’re historically perhaps the most misunderstood animal on this planet — and their exceptional family/pack structure, their keen intelligence, their vital place in nature — and their very lives must be protected by those of us who still have the capacity to care about the existence of nature itself. OPEN THREAD:
that is a gorgeous wolf. Wow.
I’ll send Gale a note.
I ran up a $159 cell phone bill last month. All that moving stuff and long chats with Susan exploded my minutes. I think I have 300 minutes, plus free on weekends and after 6pm. And I still went way over. Oh well. If anyone wants to buy a bumper sticker it would make me feel better.
What’s the Booman’s favorite type of milkbone?
thanks Manny. He likes the kind with the Golden Retreiver on it. The Saint Bernard one’s crumble and get all over the carpet.
as long as I know that the calls are between you and Susan, rather than Boo and the racoons.
speciesist!!
I bought a book from your Powell’s link here this morning… Does that count? 🙂
Hugely! Thank you!
These lazy, incompetent cowards are the very essence of Bush and the Republican Party. I won’t get Boo in trouble with the anti-patriot act by suggesting that guns shoot up as well as down.
Wolves are smarter than most politicians.
Shooting them from planes? That’s like Cheney going on his canned hunts where tame birds are released right in front of the shotguns. Another term for it is murder.
And that fact that this administration would continue to kill the wolves in spite of a court order, in other words, Illegally. What else is new?
Done, thanks for the heads up on this. What a travesty to slaughter animals like that.
In Wyoming we had to contend with a lack of natural predators in our deer and elk populations. With no other predators other than man and the occasional mountain lion, a flush green year followed by another can cause elk and deer populations to go over the edge. I will eat a deer or an elk, I’m not a vegetarian…..I was cured of it watching them starve to death in January pawing their way through the snows looking for any little green thing they could eat. Wolves are my first wildlife love.
Eight new signatures besides mine in the time it took me to fill out the form!
Thanks very much for this alert, susanhu.
Seriously, what is it with our species? Are that many of us truly insane?
Thanks for the link susan. I’d gotten some email alerts on this and dumped them by mistake then forgot about it. So now have signed petition here.
Speaking of those canned hunts that some assholes do, there is a disgusting practice where rich people can shoot some ‘wild’ animal in a pen then supposedly donate it to a museum and use that as an excuse to take a big charitable tax deduction…and the museums are sometimes someones trailer or basement. I think there is a link through the Humane Society for a petition to sign against this practice and tax payer rip-off. I’ll see if I can find it later or someone else might.
What a small world-

Done, Susan. What a cruel, disgusting practice.
http://mpetrelis.blogspot.com/2006/01/u.html I came across this blog by accident a few days ago. Apparently the U.S. Treasury quietly released the names of everyone? on the no fly lists on Jan.18th. According to blog you can go to Treasury site where there are 97 pages of names. With my old dial up I decided I didn’t want to download 97 pages but thought you guys would be interested to see this list…I know I am.
Isn’t it amazing the stuff you find out by accident?
Wolves are one of the most beautiful creatures on this planet, in my opinion. As you said Susan, for their intelligence, their social structure, their pack mentality, the distances they cover, never mind their aesthetic beauty.
We, however, are one of the more loathesome creatures on this planet as we endlessly find more and more repulsive ways to destroy any life around us. Very simply, we suck. Present company excluded.
This means so much to me. Most of the time, when I get those e-mails from Defenders of Wildlife, I haven’t even the ability to read about the latest cruelty … it’s just unbearable.
Knowing that you ALL responded so much lifts my heart.
Oh no!!! We should send her a copy of the classic movie!
Or the newer Anime “Wolf’s Rain”. It has nobles and monarchy ruling the world in the future w/ no respect for the law, as a Bushie she will love it!
Signed it, Susan, though I never could tell if it went through okay. Thank you for alerting us. My maiden name was wolfe–I feel connected.
Ran into a person who had a hybrid wolf–and it was soooo gentle–just walked right up to me, and wanted to be petted. While I was bumming aroung, that wolf hybrid became one of my best friends! (Always been an animal-lover!)
