In the wake of what feels like a crushing defeat, I think we need to step away for a moment and look at why we, internet activists, bloggers, or whatever we are to be called, do what we do in the first place.
What is it that drives us to research, write, discuss, organize, or take action? Why do we gather by the thousands in virtual communities daily to hear news and opinion? Why do we spend endless hours discussing issues and strategies? Why do we, in times of defeat and despair find comfort in each others company … and eventually, dust ourselves off and rejoin the battle?
Although each of us could probably list scores of different reasons why we do what we do, in the end of the day it would all come down to one thing; we are all here because in spite of all our cynicism and jaded rhetoric, we really do believe that we have the power to provoke change.
We all know, in some sort of an almost primal, subconscious way, that we are at the epicenter of one of the great seismic shifts in the way our society will be governed.
On one hand, we recognize the enormous potential influence of the internet and internet activism to give voice and power to the American people. We can imagine a not so distant future where average citizens will have their voices heard in the halls of power and their concerns addressed as they have never been addressed before.
On the other, we see our democracy threatened in ways it’s never been threatened before. We see those in power disregard many of the tenets on which our nation was founded and hold them in near contempt. We watch as our leaders dismantle our Constitution and Bill of Rights piece by piece in an attempt to maintain power. We see those whom we elect to represent us either taking part in this rape of democracy, or standing by impotently, unable to stop them.
It is this dichotomy that compels us … it is the reason why we fight.
… continued below …
This is why when things like the 2004 election, or the Alito confirmation occur we take our defeats so hard. The stakes are so important, and our potential to effect change so great, we have a hard time reconciling the fact that we do not yet have the power to attain our goals.
But this should be no mystery to us. We learned this lesson in Junior High science. There is a great difference between potential energy and kinetic energy.
We have massive amounts of potential energy … we are yet to figure out a way to harness and release it. In physics, there is often a device or tool that transforms potential energy into kinetic. We are still just starting the process of building those tools. Organizational tools, communication tools, networking tools, strategy tools are all being tested and refined with each grand campaign we engage in.
We have learned many lessons so far … and have many more to learn
But … we should not take the knowledge we have gained thus far and use it only on the “grand campaigns,” the Gannons, the Downing Street Memos and Alitos. We must take what we learn from each of these battles and transfer that knowledge to the small battles that will eventually help lead us to victory.
When there is no “grand campaign” to fight we need to still remain focused. Congressional races, Senatorial races, Governorships, State Assemblies , City Councils, all the way down to the local schools board, should all be of concern. We should refine the tools we have acquired thus far and work on new ones. Eventually, through trial and error in these “skirmishes” we will figure out new ways to harness the enormous potential we have, and turn it into the energy needed to effect change.
We need to focus on helping those who support our beliefs and policies. Conversely, it is even more important to oppose those who don’t share our concerns … no matter what their party. Some of our greatest enemies right now are not those who we clearly recognize, but those who claim to be our allies yet fail to stand up and be counted.
Each time we retreat in defeat, lose focus, start to squabble amongst ourselves or play the blame game we’re just losing valuable time.
Our opponents do not waver in their quest. Scandals, indictments, falling poll numbers, unfavorable world opinion, a failed foreign policy, losing a war, losing a major city, and losing the lives of thousand of US soldiers, these things do not deter them.
That is why we fight.

Great diary! It was a help on this very depressing morning in this most troubling time.
Check out Digby at Hullabaloo also.
Digby … right on spot, as usual
I do believe there is hope for success in regaining democracy here in our republic. But only if we inform ourselves on the methods that have been used in the past, and adapt these methods to our time.
Why have we forgotten to study the legacies and lessons of Martin Luther King’s civil rights movement, Gandhi in India, Lech Walesa in Poland, Norwegian Resistance WWII, Argentina’s Mothers and Grandmothers of the Disappeared, and many others…
If we refuse to educate ourselves as to the tools available how are we to proceed to rectify this fascist drift? If you are interested in this line of thought, you may start here
Coretta Scott King passes
Very sad.
inevitably you’re going to slip back a bit now and then — the point is to not give up and go back home to sit on the couch and eat cookies, but to keep climbing, because it may be tough going, but the view from the top is definitely worth it.
(Gee, could use one of AndiF’s “blue dot” pictures right about now…)
especially when I have one that perfectly fits what you are saying.
and we also have to think of what would happen if we were not there at all?
As bad as Alito is the situation would be a lot more dire if the current administration went unopposed!
Welcome to the Tin Hat community — no, not here. But read some of the “other” blogs today. (I won’t mention them by name to avoid a flame war.)
If you do you will learn that 1) Alito is not that important — this was all a waste of time to oppose a Supreme Court nomination; 2) Bush is toast, he has no power, will probably be impeached, and most likely will lose his pool privileges; 3) the conservative movement is over, they have lost momentum and the tide has turned.
Whatever happened to the “reality based community”? Has an evil virus infected the blogs. Every defeat leads to more “this is actually a victory” garbage.
These defeats are depressing enough, knowing that those on your side are losing their minds is even worse. Instead of learning from these defeats, certain (I might say most) of the blogs are convinced that nothing needs to change — we are on the right course.
Tomorrow I will read that the cloture vote was actually rigged. In fact, 50 people voted against cloture but Bush somehow “fixed” the vote.
Not what you meant I’m sure, but Big Orange happens to be down at the moment (10:54 AM EST). Anyone know anything about that?
Close only counts when playing horseshoes. We lost, the Republicans won. They will be holding the trophy called Alito tonight at the State of the Union address. And if we were playing football, those 19 Democratic Senators help the other team win.
I think those 19 Democratic defectors need to get in line and figure out which team their playing on. As this is suppose to be a nice blog, I would not be opposed to all bloggers calling those 19 Democratic Defectors continously for a week, so there office does not function properly and thier line is always busy. If we were playing football…and I you sold your teamates out what else would you expect?
There must be some kind of way out of here
Said the joker to the thief
There’s too much confusion
I can’t get no relief
Businessman they drink my wine
Plow men dig my earth
None will level on the line
Nobody of it is worth
Hey hey
No reason to get excited
The thief he kindly spoke
There are many here among us
Who feel that life is but a joke but uh
But you and I we’ve been through that
And this is not our fate
So let us not talk falsely now
The hour’s getting late
Hey
Hey
All along the watchtower
Princes kept the view
While all the women came and went
Bare-foot servants to, but huh
Outside in the cold distance
A wild cat did growl
Two riders were approachin’
And the wind began to howl
Hey
Oh
All along the watchtower
Hear you sing around the watch
Gotta beware gotta beware I will
Yeah
Ooh baby
All along the watchtower
What is with this song lyric stuff? Its contagious.
By the way, the song was written by Bob Dylan, not Jimi Hendrix.
we also need to remember to stop and smell the roses. One of the reason do get into a funk or “give up” is not because the person really is wanting to say I quit. Stress comes at us from all directions. It comes from the big and small events as well as the positive and negative events of life. Most of us think of stress as negative, but it is the positive stress is that rush we get to meet deadlines, generate new ideas, motivation and energy. And the problem is, all that possitive stree can actually work againist us and that is probably why people “burn out.”
Remeber, burnout occurs when you become increasingly overwhelmed and depleted of energy. And when that happens, people start having feelings of hopelessness, powerlessness, cynicism, resentment and failure — as well as stagnation. Which can result in levels of depression or unhappiness that eventually having people wanting to give up. And this, is what BushCo is expecting. Why do you think they don’t “waver in their quest.” This is all studied in PSYOPS.
So yes, fighting the good fight is good, but we don’t monitor ourselves and take time to smell the roses, they will also.
We need to acknowledge the massive dimensions of our own denial, accept responsibility for it and for the tragedies manifested as a result of it, and to overcome our continuing propensity for indulging in denial as a way of clinging to those beliefs and ideas we want to believe are true.
The system is broken. The Democratic party as currently constituted is not capable of fixing it. If we cling to the “Party” as a sacred cow, we are doomed.
