I had a dream last night.
Martin Luther King Jr. had dreams too.
So did Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson, a great blues singer and alto saxophonist who had a strong influence on the young Charlie Parker. (His “It Was Only A Dream” is the most agonizingly truthful song about the interface between reality and aspiration that I have ever heard. All sung with the astounding good humor and optimism in the face of perverse cruelty that marked the black culture of this country right on through the official apartheid years. HIS head was clean. For SURE.)
My dream was that “something” had happened that ended this nightmare inside of which we are living today in America. People were partying up a storm. Bush and BushCo had surrendered; the smoking gun of conspiracy and creeping, media-enforced covert fascism had been discovered, and the sleeping people of America had finally awakened from their decades-long trance. This dream was so strong, so immediate and so real that it propelled me up and out of bed to log onto the web and see if indeed something HAD happened. I have never done this before. It was that strong.
But, as I found when I checked the news sites…it was only a dream.
I immediately thought of Cleanhead.
However, I could not go back to sleep. Something HAD happened, something important to me was out there somewhere, and I wanted to find out what it was.
Well…I found it.
Read on to get the REAL dream.
Nightmare America.
From an essay by the wonderful Joe Bageant, “Carpooling with Adolph Eichmann”.
A series of quotations from a book written over 50 years ago by Milton Mayer about the rise of Naziism in Germany called “They Thought They Were Free, The Germans, 1938-45” (University of Chicago Press,1955)
Read it and weep for your country.
Sound familiar?
“…one no more saw it developing from day to day than a farmer in his field sees the corn growing. . . “
And…
“You wait for one great shocking occasion, thinking that others, when such a shock comes, will join you in resisting somehow.”
How long are we going to wait?
How long are we going to accede to the non-opposition of our so called “opposition” party?
“You have accepted things you would not have accepted five years ago, a year ago, things your father. . . could never have imagined.”
MY father died two years ago.
He flew Spitfires in the Battle of Britain. He and my mother…both Americans… volunteered to join the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1938 to go and fight Hitler.
They were ahead of their time.
Visionaries.
THEY had a dream, too.
They were brave young Americans who believed in the American dream of democracy and freedom and were willing to put their corporeal asses on the line to defend that dream.
But when he died…and for decades BEFORE that…he too had “accepted” what he could not even BEGIN to imagine or understand. Turned his face away from the awful reality of what this country was becoming.
Why?
How?
Because…”The forms [were] all there, all untouched, all reassuring, the houses, the shops, the jobs, the mealtimes, the visits, the concerts, the cinema, the holidays.”
Only the SPIRIT had changed.
“…the people who hate and fear do not even know it themselves, when everyone is transformed, no one is transformed.”
Which is where we have come to today.
We accept SO much.
We “accept” domestic spying on an unprecedented scale…and believe me, we have not even seen the TIP of that particular digital iceberg, and probably never will.
We “accept” stolen elections, elections that are so BLATANTLY stolen that even the population of a classic banana republic would be outraged, elections where both the official opposition party AND EVEN THE SO-CALLED OUTLAW “PRESS” (Major left wing blogs…and you know JUST who I mean) turn their heads and make believe that nothing is happening.
In their own shallow self-interest.
We “accept” the undeniable fact that this administration lied to the American public about what was going on in Iraq so that they could prosecute their Blood For Oil War.
We have “accepted” domestic and international assassinations, a phony War Against Drugs, a progressive dumbing down of the educational and cultural systems, the destruction of the family system by a two wage-slave workforce…Mommy and Daddy BOTH got to work seven days a week plus overtime just to pay for the necessities…a totally dishonest media and SO much more.
Our passivity, our acceptance of the progressively more and more odious set of “new realities” presented to us by those in power is running us down a long and bumpy road that leads straight to hell.
And what is the key to ALL of this “acceptance”?
Once again, I quote Joe Bageant. This time from another essay, “The Simulacran Republic”.
—snip—
Meanwhile the culture-generating industry spins our mythology like cotton candy. We all need it to survive, Hollywood myths, Imperial myths, melting pot myths, the saluting dick male myths. They keep the machine running. And when the machine is running correctly, it smoothes its own way by terrifying uncooperative people into submission in prisons and torture rooms, where we do not have to look at the corpses on ice and the naked hooded bodies handcuffed to the bars. We are innocent as long as we keep our eyes taped shut. And only with our eyes shut can we keep seeing the hologram. And with duct tape over our mouths, we can recite its slogans with one hand over our heart with the other one resting on the trigger.
The average American spends about one third of his or her waking life watching television. The neurological implications of this are so profound that they cannot even be comprehended in words, much less described by them. Television creates our reality, regulates our national perceptions and our interior hallucinations of who we Americans are (the best and only important tribe on the planet.) It schedules our cultural illusions of choice, displays pre-selected candidates in our elections, or types of consumer goods. It regulates holiday marketing opportunities and the national neurological seasons, which are now governed by the electrons of the illusion. We live within a media-generated belief system that functions as the operating instructions for society. Anything outside of its parameters represents fear and psychological freefall to the faceless legions of within it.
—snip—
This is by no means a free country and given the intense luminosity of the hologram, we cannot even see freedom from here, and probably would not recognize it if we could. Moreover though, we cannot tear our eyes away from the great flickering glow of the hologram.
And people wonder why I advocate newstrikes and new parties?
The Democratic Party is now a hologram of itself. You could put your hand right through Joe Lieberman, Joe Biden, Joe kerry…ALL the digital Joes and Josephines…AND their so-called “positions” if you could get close enough to them to do so.
They literally DO NOT EXIST!!!
Certainly not in the form in which they are presented to us.
Do you not find it a little…questionable that Mary Matalin and James Carville…those two “competing” purveyors of bits and bites in the form of opposing politicians…presumably SLEEP TOGETHER every night? Eat breakfast in the morning and then sally forth into the lists of the political wars ON OPPOSITE SIDES?
Please, people.
Wake the fuck up.
It is getting VERY late in the game.
Turn off your TVs.
Turn off the hologram.
And start dealing with what IS.
We are a one party system now. DemocRatpublicans all.
We don’t need a third party.
We just need a SECOND one.
Give me reality or give me death.
Turn off the TV and wake the fuck up.
Before we all end up sleeping with the fishes.

Cleanhead knew…
Keep this dream alive.
Rec this up and let’s talk.
AG
to my diary about the Egyptian ship tragedy and reccommend it, that is, if you like it.
I came, I saw, I recommended.
Good diary.
AG
Excellent, Arthur!
Suskind…
You’re beginning to look a little…familiar.
Welcome home.

“All great literature is based on a single theme: the case of mistaken identity.”
Do you know that song of Cleanhead’s “She’s got great big legs” I love that guy.
Yup.
All great blogs too.
(The mistaken..or kerfuffled…ID, not the great big legs.)
AG
We don’t need a third party.
We just need a SECOND one.
I got one chill after another when I was researching timelines of Hitler’s rise to power. The similarities are remarkable.
Aren’t they, though.
The Virtual Hitler.

This is exactly how I felt as Tampopo and I walked along the Mall in DC two weeks ago and I was overcome with the sickening and nightmarish feeling that I was now a foreigner in a foreign land as I wondered if she and I were the only two people there who KNEW what was happening and that didn’t even begin to address those who DO know and not only accept it but SUPPORT it.
Supersoling…I call that part of Washington “DeeCeeLand”.
Just another contentless amusement park.
As has become much of the rest of America.
Bageant pins it.
Hologram America.
And the worst part is that although there are and have been any NUMBER of Paul Reveres thundering through the streets yelling “The bad guys are coming!!! The bad guys are coming!!!” (And more recently “The bad guys are HERE!!!”) for quite some time…from the political movements of the ’60s right through such prophetic writers as William Burroughs, Thomas Pynchon and Jimmy Breslin…hell, I may as well throw George Orwell into that list while I’m at it, and maybe even Mark Twain as well if you read him right…instead of shutters being thrown open and muskets primed, the general reaction of the population is now “Oh, HELL, Mabel!!! There’s that crazy guy again. Close the window. What’s on tonight? Suvivor? Oooooo, GOOD!!!”
Beef. It’s what’s for dinner.
It’s as if the British had managed to put 1000 “Paul Reveres” out there, each with a different message and each a little sillier than the one that came down the block last week. Had they been able to do that, we would still be playing “God Save The Queen” and eating bangers and mash.
Come to think of it…in light of my recent experiences in a working class suburb of London, that might not have been be such a bad result. Overall, the Brits are MUCH more aware of the bullshit than are Americans, and much less tranced out by the media.
I’m out of ideas. My voice is hoarse from yelling, and my steed is getting tired as well. I feel as if I’m shouting down some endless vacuum tube and I don’t even hear an ECHO of what I am saying, let alone any substantive response. It’s beginning to appear to me that it’s not even worth the effort.
Anyway…from one Paul Revere to another…best of luck in the future.
We are ALL going to need it.
Trust in God and tie your camel, because…
The camel thieves are now in power, and it does not look to me like they are going to be unseated anytime soon..

“To be GOVERNED is to be watched, inspected, spied upon, directed, law-driven, numbered, regulated, enrolled, indoctrinated, preached at, controlled, checked, estimated, valued, censured, commanded, by creatures who have neither the right nor the wisdom nor the virtue to do so. To be GOVERNED is to be at every operation, at every transaction noted, registered, counted, taxed, stamped, measured, numbered, assessed, licensed, authorized, admonished, prevented, forbidden, reformed, corrected, punished. It is, under pretext of public utility, and in the name of the general interest, to be place under contribution, drilled, fleeced, exploited, monopolized, extorted from, squeezed, hoaxed, robbed; then, at the slightest resistance, the first word of complaint, to be repressed, fined, vilified, harassed, hunted down, abused, clubbed, disarmed, bound, choked, imprisoned, judged, condemned, shot, deported, sacrificed, sold, betrayed; and to crown all, mocked, ridiculed, derided, outraged, dishonored. Unfourtunately AG, it is here, it has always been here and lots of people seem to like it.
Neither governed nor a Governor be. Me
Unfortunately, ed, I must ask you a question that so many people seem to have been asking me here lately.
What are you DOING about this?
I ask it not in any hostile manner…just out of curiosity. I myself have natural anarchist leanings…I have lived most of my life at the very outskirts of this civilization in the perception that such a life (with all of its drawbacks) was still preferable to being ruled in the manner you describe in your post.
But…and here’s the kicker of the last 6 years or so…it is beginning to appear to me that such a life is being made increasingly difficult (if not downright impossible) by the rapidly encroaching ice of this crypto-fascist regime.
So I have begun trying to talk some sense on the only outlets I can find to do so.
The blogs.
With disappointing results.
So…who ya gonna call?
Ghostbusters?
The IRA?
Your local travel agent?
The local DemocRatpublican club?
I’m fresh out of answers.
Got any?
AG
AG,
I intended to answer your questions, but I just learned that a friend and great activist has passed. Rest In Peace Grampa Al Lewis. I’ll get back to you.
Indeed.
An…interesting man.
May God reward him.
AG
and he ran for Gov. of NY as a Green.
He got 52,000 votes.
Rest in Peace
And he appeared as a sort of informal “character witness” at one of John Gottis’ trials.
And I know for a fact (I have seen it with my own eyes…freelance musicians get to see a lot of things if they keep their eyes open) that in the Italian/Mafia/Greenwich Village/downtown underworld…it’s right there, just beneath the Soho glitter if you know how ands where to look…he hung with some pretty nasty characters.
And he misrepresented himself at one time as having earned some sort of doctorate from Columbia.
Now I am not necessarily against show biz people cultivating the favors of mobsters…after all, they’re the ones who hire you quite a bit of the time…and I don’t give a DAMN about his academic credentials or lack thereof…
You must admit, he had a lot of range.
Gotti to Green.
A LOT of range.
Thus my statement that he was…interesting.
And my fervent prayer that he gets whatever he deserves in the afterlife, if indeed there is one as we commonly use the word.
Saint, sinner or somewhere in between…he had a LOT of range. Gotta give him credit for that, at least.
Later…
AG
Guilt by association?
I don’t know if hanging with nasty characters makes you a nasty character yourself.
I’ve seen PLENTY of these nasty types being involved in the NY race boat business as a custom painter.
All sorts of INTERESTING characters like to spend their ill or otherwise gotten gains.
There are investment bankers and oil traders that are just as nasty in what they do as any Brooklyn vegetable market owner.
Indeed.
It’s not the hang that I am wondering about.
It’s the RANGE.
Now “Grampa” appeared on WBAI for years espousing quite radical positions. He was well and widely known as someone who cared deeply about racial and sexual inclusion, etc.
Gotti, on the other hand, WAS IN THE BUSINESS OF DISTRIBUTING THE HEROIN AND CRACK WHICH DECIMATED THE VERY SAME NEIGHBORHOODS ABOUT WHICH AL LEWIS PROFESSED TO BE SO CONCERNED.
Now I don’t know whether Gotti was so high up that he dealt directly with the spooks who ran that shit in, but even if he wasn’t, he was doing the work of the Reagan-era “Kill the black neighborhoods to kill the black resistance” movement that was plainly in place during that time.
And Lewis’s involvement with that level of “bad guy” while simultaneously appearing as a spokesman for the radical left always smelled pretty bad to me.
At best…stupid bad.
At worst…mole bad.
Provocateur bad.
My guess…just stupid bad.
So it goes in the big city.
There are 7 million stories, and most of them have no real point whatsoever.
Just accidents, waiting for a place to stop happening.
So it goes.
R.I.P., Grampa.
We hardly knew ye.
AG
I don’t watch any tv. I don’t have a big case of the “want it want it now” very often either. I may be lacking in some of the cultural clues, but the thought of watching “survivor” just disgusts me! Seems to me that a web cam over a water cooler would be cheaper and more authentic!
In talking about the olympics (on my local NPR station) and the coverage or lack thereof, a commentator pointed out that tv was not a means of bringing programs to the public, but people to the advertisers. I think people lack the crucial ability to really understand what “free markets” represents. It isn’t about getting cheap stuff.
You write: “I think people lack the crucial ability to really understand what “free markets” represents. It isn’t about getting cheap stuff. “
Are you SURE about that?
I’m not.
Maybe our whole system is flawed.
Instead of “The End of History”, maybe it’s just “The End of Capitalism” that we are witnessing.
If so…it looks to me like it’s going to be a damned bloody one.
AG
“free markets” just means a hefty profit for the middle man! The sweat shop workers make nothing. The clothing profits go to the Nike industry and such.
Arthur,
this is your very best diary yet, IMHO, and I think you should post it over at Kos as well, as it should be read by as many folks as possible. Please!
I disagree with you on some stuff (i.e. Wesley Clark), but reading this (as someone born and raised in post-WWII Germany), it just gave me chills up and down my spine.
My mother lived through the bombing of Berlin, and had two scars from Russian bullets on her scalp.
My stepfather had photos of his murdered , naked, mutilated soldier comrades (which I came across by accident as a child). They left a huge impression on me, although I never told him that I saw them.
He deserted the German army, as he could not stand what was happening. He was a hero for doing so.
Your diary describes the process of numbification so beautiful, and I must say I have the same nightmares these days.
Gabriele…
I was offed three times from Dkos. Three different names. Jess Fine, then Arthur Gilroy, then Charleslives.
Three’s the charm.
I was saying nothing much different than I am saying here, and I think I frightened some of the power structure there because:
1-I can write.
2-I didn’t back down from their royal eminences and
3-I HEARTILY disagreed with many of the “official” lines that were being drawn there. Not the least of which was that there should be an official line of any kind on a so-called “democratic” (small “d”, please) blog.
So I am not going back.
I have little enough time to use as it is. Sparring with creatures like DHinMI is the last thing I want to be doing.
However…if you want to risk your own position there…feel free to either reprint my post in its entirety or post some excerpts and a link to it.
Your choice.
I think that here are many, MANY well meaning people over there and I wish I COULD reach them.
But I’ve got several other lives to lead as well, and time is of the essence.
No more wasted effort for me.
Have fun…
AG
P.S. Glad you liked what I wrote. I have few enough days where I can do my own work,.,,which for the last few days has been simply practicing my horn and recovering from a month where I essentially had two days off and a LOT of travel…and it is a pleasure when I can afford the time to get up at 4 or 5AM when it is really quiet, and concentrate on saying and doing something from the heart.
When the heart is willing to speak, of course…
‘Bye…
Arthur,
I DID post it on Kos, along with my own thoughts on the matter. Go over and check it out and leave any positive/negtive feedback for me either here or there.
Thanks again for the diary. I hope I helped in some way, give more voice to your insights. I truly believe you had a vision last night.
Well,
it looks like only a very few on Kos are willing to accept this train of thought.
I myself believe you hit it right on, and will keep putting it out. Thanks for the inspiration.
It needs to be said, over and over. Most just don’t know how far along in the process we are, and how little time we have left. Sigh!
Dkos is SO over, Gabriele.
It’s not as though I have some sort of feud going on with it or an obsession, as one of the Kos boys suggested here a week or so ago…to tell you the truth, it matters very little to me.
It’s just over. They made the error of trying to censor things, and that ended its real value.
You are either free to think independently or you are not. Left OR right. As soon as that freedom is curtailed…it’s over.
After that it’s all downhill.
Dkos…and its power structure…only THINK that they are in opposition to what is happening in this administration.
Instead, by adopting the tactics of the opposition, they BECAME that opposition.
The opposite side of its coin of the realm.
Just like the Democrats who are whining about “framing”.
Freedom of concept CANNOT be framed.
That’s what makes it dangerous, and that’s what makes it difficult as well.
When Dkos offed all of its so-called “tinfoil hat” members, it essentially said “You can only think this far and no further.”
In its own short-term self interest.
And at the very moment, it became what if fought.
Too bad.
So it goes.
There is always another scene.
So far…this is it.
Good thing, too.
Freedom always finds a home.
AG
.
with some of your points.
But there’s stil a heck of a life going on there, and a whole bunch of people willing to go forward. No, Arthur, I’m in no way dismissing that community.
Conviction is what all of us will bring together. And there are many people just waiting for someone to pull us together.
They may come from anywhere. But I’d like to keep all of the doors open for us to finally agree on uniting on the one thing: GET BUSHCO OUT – NOW!!
I will not exclude my personal un-preferences from the roll-call. We are ALL needed, and I will welcome all, for whatever reasons they wish to do so. First things first.
You write: “And there are many people just waiting for someone to pull us together.”
I agree.
However, this will not happen within the Democratic Party OR on blogs like Dkos because they are both exclusionary in nature.
The Democratic Party TALKS a good game…but it is a party of mostly white, mostly middle class, mostly middle aged college graduates, and those many people waiting to be pulled together in America are NOT that.
They are muti-ethnic, muti-cultural, multi-aged, and from a broad spectrum of economic levels. (With a decided emphasis on DOWN.) When these people see a farce like that last Democratic convention; when they see a slate of white, middle aged, college graduate professional rich people politicians, when they realize that in their working class and below, white, black and Spanish neighborhoods the Democrats come in like a pack of hyenas to pick off what they can from the herd and then head back upscale…they sign off.
Plus the young are hip to the game even earlier than THAT. The smart ones are, anyway.
And Dkos?
Offing people for talking about the plainly stolen elections of 2000 and 2004?
Please!!!
Herding the sleeple in ever tighter circles around the “correct” Democratic choices? Most of whom just copped out in broad daylight on the Alito thing?
I am sorry, Gabriele.
A year ago, when I first started looking into the blogs, I had high hopes for Dkos.
I was sadly mistaken.
And so are you if you think that anything substantive is going to come out of that “community”. Because every time someone brushes up against an unpleasant truth…they will be offed in the name of “solidarity”.
That tactic worked REALLY well for the American Communist Parties, didn’t it?
And it will marginalize Dkos as well. because that old computer programmer’s saying holds true both above and below.
GIGO.
Garbage In, Garbage Out.
And what has no “new” in it IS garbage.
Dkos and the Democratic Party both.
Same old same old.
Same old tired types saying the same old tired things.
GIGO
Garbage In, Garbage Out.
Joe Lieberman and Markos Moulitsas Zuniga.
Two peas, different pods.
Holograms of change rather than change itself.
Soi it goes.
Concentrate your efforts where there is real freedom of thought and expression, Gabriele.
THAT’S where the real action ALWAYS jumps off.
Not in some giant PTA meeting.
AG
I’m wiped out tonight. I hear what you say, but I’d like to rebut some of your opinions.
In the meantime, good night and good dreams.
Gabriele
I’m pooped.
For that alone you get a recommend! 🙂
There is always an action you can take, even if it is just strapping on a bomb and blowing up a military check-point. (Now do you understand those people?)
The question for us is what is the right action? On a blog, we should be taking the time to think. We will find something.
But the time when things could be levered onto the right track easily is behind us. Specifically, America has already closed off its good futures. Whatever happens, we are now fated to a period of disaster. On the other hand, the coming crash will open up new possibilities. Are we ready for them?
I am truly not sure that am ready to pay many more dues than I have already, Gaianne.
Been a long haul, so far.
Like I find myself saying so often these days…
We shall see.
AG
wonderful post, Arthur. And as you say, what are you going to do about it? What am I going to do about it? What CAN we do about it considering the monolith we are working against? What new paradigms of resistance to we need do come up with and implement?
(just sent you an email asking this same thing. let’s talk sometime since I believe we’re both New Yorkers.)
Arthur,
First, let me second Gabriele’s comment that this is one of your finest diaries, if not the best.
In my more dispairing moments I think the only way we’re going to put an end to this evil is when the US empire falls, as did the USSR. This will happen when the oil runs out, we decide to have WWIII to try and secure our supplies, and then China calls in our Visa cards and the economy collapses. Between now and then things may well get more ugly.
I do have more hopeful moments, though, some even like your good dream. The problem is deciding what’s real and what’s not; what’s most likely to occur and under what circumstances.
My reading of history reinforces my darker thoughts, but my reading of environmental science gives me even darker ones yet:
The world’s population today is 6 billion, projected to be 9 billion at mid-century. That’s NOT ecologically sustainable. Period. In 2100 or 2150 the world population will be more like 2 billion, which is a number the planet might be able to handle for the long term if we get our act together. That’s a LOT of death barrelling down the turnpike, and it’s even more inevitable than Bushco. Kinda puts it all in perspective – these guys are card sharks robbing the passengers on the Titanic.
As a wise man once told me – Bet on it.
No telling.
Plans are what we make while life continues unfazed.
We shall see.
AG
Incredible diary. What I fear the most is that feeling I have in my gut. It is like I am tredding water, just waiting for the lifeboat to resue me and the sharks are all circling and the only sound I can hear is the banging of my heart in my dying heart. We are all trying to figure it out and how to best get rid of the Cabal of Fascists in the White House AND on the GD TV. ANd nope there is something that is matching the beating of my heart and that is the beating of the wat drums on the TV and the rest of the “neo-cloned” media that the boogeyman has moved to Iran and “we” must beat him down. I have hope still that through these coversations here we just might find a solution but will it be too late?
Sorry for the flipping typos it is early and I was up way past my bedtime last night. Preview/spellcheck are my friends.
I had the honor of knowing and performing with Cleanhead. His superb musicianship was matched only by his warmth and kindness. As you probably know, a very young John Coltrane played in Cleanhead’s band. It was during a rough time for Coltrane – back before Trane got clean. I asked Cleanhead what Coltrane was like ….Eddie smiled that wonderful smile of his and said he knew that Trane was going to be a force and that he was a very nice man. I also played with Jay McShann and asked him about a young Charlie Parker’s tenure in his band, Mr McShann – his response was similar to Eddie’s – he said he knew Charlie Parker would “make it” and complimented Bird as a person. This was in Kansas City, before New York. Good thread.
Dabobbo…you played with the right people.
Glad to hear from you.
AG
Thanks for the response, AG. My current gig (since ’87) is with Etta James. ( guitar )
Almost 20 years?
That’s not a gig…,it’s a CAREER!!!
Great singer.
Love her to death.
Like I said…you’ve played with the right people.
