The I Miss My Mommy Edition. My mom died 4 years ago today. We had a lot of baggage between us. That’s an understatement. Things were never really good. I always loved her anyway. I still miss her. These are some songs she loved and/or that remind me of her:
You Can’t Always Get What You Want – The Rolling Stones
Let The Good Times Roll – The Cars
Who Are You – The Who
Dear Prudence – The Beatles
Monkey Man – The Rolling Stones
Sweetness Follows – REM
Tomorrow – U2
Fire & Rain – James Taylor
Days Go By – Dirty Vegas
Out Of Range – Ani DiFranco
Sounds like you are having a melancholy day, Indy.
Here’s a song that I found fits well for such moments:
Boheme – Deep Forest (from the album Boheme, last track – the second last track – Katharina – is along the same lines).
I seem to recall from my diary at Christmas that you and I have shared some similar experiences. I know what you mean about the music. My childhood memories have had to be scavenged. Even small things become important — songs, smells…
Yesterday something incredible happened to me. Someone who knew me when I was a toddler had gotten in touch a few years ago. I got an email from him yesterday and his son has been cataloguing all of his old photos and putting them online.
He sent me the link and there were these pictures of me and my mom and we just looked so happy (or at least I did) that, well, I burst into tears. I’ve been feeling a little off ever since, to tell the truth. But it was a miraculous gift. I’m sure there will be healing gifts in your life as well. Thanks for telling us about your mother’s songs.
(btw, I’m now almost certain you’re younger than me)
That’s so cool about the pictures your mom and you. I just got some really old film (10+ years) developed and they were from when my kids were toddlers and they made me cry.
BTW…I know how old Indy is and I’ll tell you…for a price. 🙂
Just passed the first anniversary of my mom’s passing…been there, done that, got the f-ing T-shirt. Yeah, she was a right-wing stubborn old broad…but I still miss her too…

For you Olympics watchers during the coming week — I got some exciting news today from my “Honorary Niece”. (Her mom and I have known each other since my family moved next door to hers when I was 4 years old. )
She’s a wonderful young lady who just graduated from college and is in New York trying to make it as a dancer/choreographer. I got the following e-mail today:
So for those of you who don’t know. I choreographed a Winter Olympics Commercial for Coca Cola. I was in charge of one day of auditions, 2 days of callbacks, one day of rehearsal, and then we filmed for two days in a house in Westchester, NY. I just heard they edited the material into 10 different spots, meaning 10 commercials, some 15 seconds and some 30 seconds. They have already started to run and they should be running throughout the month of Feb. during the Olympics on main channels like 2,4,5…
Apparently these commercials will depict “ordinary guys” acting like cheerleaders for their favorite olympic sports, like bobsled.
. I didn’t make up the words to the cheers, but everything else I did (formations, rhythm, motions, cheerleading moves/steps). Keep in mind the choreography is really goofy and its supposed to look like the guys made up the cheers themselves (and they know nothing about cheerleading).
So I’m pretty proud of her that one of her first jobs is a series of COCA COLA commercials during the Olympics. That’s gotta be big media buy for Coke. And a great break for her.
Hopefully she’ll get some “real” jobs out of this with real dancers and real dancing.
Going Home — Chloe Agnew (of Celtic Woman)
Beaver Valley ’37: Black Snow (comp. Mancini) — Richard Hayman and His Orchestra
Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring (comp. J.S. Bach) — Peter Hurford
Network 23 — Tangerine Dream
The Olympic Spirit — John Williams
Amish Paradise — Weird Al Yankovic
Everywhere I Go — The Call
What Is Hip? — Tower of Power
Tom Sawyer — Rush
“La Stravaganza”: Concerto #12 in G Major, Largo (comp. Vivaldi) — Sir Neville Marriner & Academy of St. Martin in the Fields
Interesting that “The Olympic Spirit” popped up today, considering the spouse and I will be watching the opening ceremonies this evening…
I like your taste in music — a lot. I especially love Maria Muldaur and Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes doing “Having a Party” is one of the greatest good time songs of all time.
Hey, thanks. My iPod/Mac iTunes collection is pretty eclectic, but the Random Ten selections show some consistent tendencies, even when I suppress the random Gilbert and Sullivan songs.
release of iTunes, there’s a feature in Preferences -> Playback called “Smart Shuffle”; you can make it more or less likely that you’ll hear songs by the same artist consecutively. You might want to check the setting…
Sometimes iTunes will play songs that you like (if you’ve rated them with the stars) more frequently, or if you’ve played them a lot iTunes’ll assume that means you like them and they’ll pop up a lot.
Did you know Maria Muldaur was up for a Grammy for her recent blues album? Let me see . . . (fishes around in the rubbish heap he calls a desk)
Yeah, for “Sweet Lovin’ Ol’ Soul.” She lost out to Delbert McClinton’s “Cost Of Living.” Elwood Blues played cuts from all the blues nominees on last Friday’s House of Blues Hour. The cut from McClinton, “One Of The Lucky Ones,” was a real knockout, but they were all good.
I think you should go with domestic spying. The others are important but Iraq and Iran are such big topics, and the culture of corruption is big too (but vague, you could get off track). Domestic spying is such a good topic with which to express outrage quickly and succinctly and then let her talk about it (she’ll love that — let her talk). Unless you have the whole night with her, in which case talk about them all.
And be sure to bring back a full report if she’s wearing a pantsuit. Booman will want to know.
Thanks, maryb and DJ. It’s a maybe, and probably not much more than a handshake opportunity, if that. At most, a chance to press a concern on a single topic, and probably shouldn’t expect much reply.
I Got Spurs That Jingle Jangle Jingle — Tex Ritter and his Texans
The Riddle Song — Pete Seeger
Can’t Get Enough Of You Baby — Smash Mouth
Squirrels — The Beastly Boys
The Steely Rag — Red Headed Fiddlers
Great Idea For A Song — Worm Quartet
Man Of Constant Sorrow — Soggy Mountain Boys
Shine On You Crazy Diamond — Pink Floyd
Moondance — Van Morrison
Lord Granville — Al Stewart
And hurry up and get well, Cabingirl! I had a cold on Monday. They aint’ no fun.
Darling, I wish I could hook you up with itunes or download thingies but I’m not that advanced yet. I’d burn you the best “Holy Roller” but I’ve effed it up and need a new one myself.
They’re raunchy rockabilly. Three man band. Guitar, bass (Jimbo stands on it soemtimes) and a drumner. High energy shows. I came home bruised and elated. And hugged twice by Jimbo 🙂

Hope you feel better soonest CabinGirl! Thanks for stepping up, froggybottom.
Be Well, Cabin Girl.
Drink lots of fluids, get lots of rest, keep your foot up (no that’s Katiebird),
OMG I’m turning into Andi.
Be well Cabin Girl.
And katiebird admitted to me in an email that her ankle really hurts so if you emulate me a bit more, you won’t fall for any more miracle cures.
is there an emoticon for sticking my tongue out at you?
here
😛 = Sticking tongue out
show off
😛
How about a wider selection for future use (I’m sure I can give you plenty of opportunities to use them)?
:-@ screaming
:-V shouting
:-r sticking tongue out
:-, smirk
😛 nyahhhh!
:-> sarcastic
If the events of this last week have taught you nothing else about me it should have taught you that I don’t join in any screaming or shouting matches.
But thanks for the rest. :-,
I’m rather partial to this one, whose meaning should be evident:

It looks like a part of a penis with a possible double piercing. What is that… ” : ” ? 🙂
What a hair raising suggestion!
google is your friend?
Andi’s a sucker for doing research assignments.

I am unfamiliar with about half of the above.
I’ll look for samples on iTunes when back home.

I can never hear (or sing) Fire and Rain without tearing up.
((((IndyLib))))
Sounds like you are having a melancholy day, Indy.
Here’s a song that I found fits well for such moments:
Boheme – Deep Forest (from the album Boheme, last track – the second last track – Katharina – is along the same lines).
I think my playlist must be dedicated to you and your Mom and that it was good karma that caused the Roches “I love my Mom” to come up.
I love you, babydoll!
Does this help? “How many damn times do I have to tell you to clean your room?!”
(((IndyLib))) from me, too.

That kind of thing can just take your breath away.
and, uh… how much?
I’m so glad you got such a gift. That is amazing.
Thanks everyone for the kind and goofy words. I adore you all. 🙂
PS. I’m 35.
Thanks! I wasn’t sure if I could afford the price. 😉
And I was right, but not by THAT much. Really.
Just passed the first anniversary of my mom’s passing…been there, done that, got the f-ing T-shirt. Yeah, she was a right-wing stubborn old broad…but I still miss her too…

Well, we’re even on playlists tonight because I haven’t heard of five of yours.
Well, mainly lots of electronica – old and new.
One of those above is not even available in regular distribution (Athome Project).
oohh I’m way behind the times, as I only got one out of each of yours, Ry Cooder and The Byrds.

My friend was being a sweetie today
I was tired of the Janet Gretzky crapola… so I said Janet was a wonderful name. A beautiful name. A Love Goddess name… he wrote with photos
A name that virtually “showers” one with praise and affection.
http://www.mercedesslips.com/leigh2_copy.jpg
A name that practically screams class and sophistication…
With an eye for the finer in things in life…and beyond…

I love that my friends are sick and twisted – just like me 🙂
We can always count on you to set just the right mood for the cafe, DJ.
it’s better than what I did in AlohaLeezy’s diary. I think I gave Salunger and Leezy the gigglefits 🙂

Ouch, only Weird Al Y out of the bunch… I need music rehab obviously…
Hockey Picks – Sharks are going up against the Phallus Scars tonight.
Cool – you got a Tangerine Dream up on random as well.
An old favorite from the late 70s.
ain’t there nuttin’ t’ eat in this joint… besides pickled pigs feet.
Okay, that made me snort with laughter 🙂
I think some of the rural bars still have them sitting in a jar on the counter… I’m a virgin in that regard, however…
I like your taste in music — a lot.
I have the same problem. I have a large collection of Christmas tunes I have to filter out or two or three of them would show up every time.
release of iTunes, there’s a feature in Preferences -> Playback called “Smart Shuffle”; you can make it more or less likely that you’ll hear songs by the same artist consecutively. You might want to check the setting…

I like Delbert McClinton, too. My favorite of his is “Cease and Desist.”
I was really happy when she revived her recording career. I have her old albums and I think her voice is in even better form now.
I may have a chance to shake hands with Nancy Pelosi. If so, should I ask her about
domestic spying
Iraq
Iran
PATRIOT Act
culture of corruption
Other?
I’d ask her when the Democrats SPINES are or are their heads shoved so far up their asses they can’t smell the Red Regime?
I’d also ask her if she’d like to give up her cushy health care that WE ALL PAY for since she doesn’t feel the rest of us need it –
I like her … but damn these Dems should be spitting pissed! Since they aren’t I’m wondering if they all aren’t sucking Dick and Bush.
oh and have a terrific evening Growthrate 🙂
Ooh, good opportunity. How did you get it?
I think you should go with domestic spying. The others are important but Iraq and Iran are such big topics, and the culture of corruption is big too (but vague, you could get off track). Or … you could go with Janet’s idea and we promise to raise your bail money.
Thanks, maryb and DJ. It’s a maybe, and probably not much more than a handshake opportunity, if that. At most, a chance to press a concern on a single topic, and probably shouldn’t expect much reply.
I’m sure that you will be the very model of a modern major general.
In that case, I’ll just go with the Croaking Chorus from The Frogs of Aristophanes.
As usual, all over the map:
I Got Spurs That Jingle Jangle Jingle — Tex Ritter and his Texans
The Riddle Song — Pete Seeger
Can’t Get Enough Of You Baby — Smash Mouth
Squirrels — The Beastly Boys
The Steely Rag — Red Headed Fiddlers
Great Idea For A Song — Worm Quartet
Man Of Constant Sorrow — Soggy Mountain Boys
Shine On You Crazy Diamond — Pink Floyd
Moondance — Van Morrison
Lord Granville — Al Stewart
And hurry up and get well, Cabingirl! I had a cold on Monday. They aint’ no fun.
I don’t know if they are any good but I feel a great fondness toward any group that would call themselves the “The Worm Quartet”
It’s actually one guy who does comedy syntho-punk. “Great Idea For A Song” was the #1 most requested song in 2004 on the Doctor Demento show.
Darling, I wish I could hook you up with itunes or download thingies but I’m not that advanced yet. I’d burn you the best “Holy Roller” but I’ve effed it up and need a new one myself.

I’m 8 out of 10 on yours which is nearly miraculous for me — that is, if that’s the same Sundays that did “Wild Horses”.
The very same–and “Wild Horses” is on the iPod, too.
Everyone watching the Olympic ceremonies?
Out partying?
In partying?
Time to put up an overnight Cafe?
Sure, this duck seems to be on life support.
