I’m never around when the Cafe needs tending, but lately I seem to stumble in when there’s a need for a new bucket. (Or did we decide to quit doing these and nobody told me?)
Oh yeah, tell me again the government is just spying on groups that may be terrorists….don’t ask and the government won’t tell who their spying on right, which is apparently every gdamn person in the country…and I include rethugs in that also. Wouldn’t be surprised to find that bushco is spying on them also just because their paranoid bastards.
Jim Talent has gone national with his stem cell flip flop story but apparently he is spinning it that he is a uniter not a divider. Boston Globe carries a Bloomberg story on it.
”The answer is for both sides to take advantage of scientific changes to find proposals that they can mutually support and which offer advantages to each compared to the current stalemate,” Talent said Friday in the Senate.
The upside for Sen. Jim Talent’s stem-cell switch Friday? Hard to see. His anti-abortion base is confused. Democrats will pound him for flip-flopping. It looks political. And proponents of early research still won’t trust him. …
Yea, did you miss “A Guide to Hillaryland”? It tells who’s in, who’s out, on the road to the White House.
Some weigh Hillary has out-hawked the hawks, she’d continue the Iraq war – she voted for it – and the Iranian nuclear program is not to be tolerated.
I won’t put my 6 penny pots at risk-quite a few dollars- but she’s being heavily promoted as the nominee in ’08. Why? Imho, she’s a polarizing figure in national politics. Bush recently dubbed her ‘formidable.’ May the good forces help us.

Hey idredit, I’ve noticed your posts around lately. Let me offer you a belated warm welcome to the pond. (I’m kinda slow, lol.)
Now, some netiquette. When you post links, please try to use HTML whenever possible since it keeps the margins of the threads at a manageable size. When people post longer urls the margins break and that makes the threads hard to read. Here’s how to use HTML to post a link:
[a href=”http://www.website.address.goes.here”]description of your link goes here[/a]
If you replace the brackets — [ and ] — with the greater than and lesser than symbols — <and> — and then put in the website address you want to link to and your own description where indicated, then you will have an HTML encoded hotlink, like this:
Also, on the page where you post comments from, you will notice a drop down menu in between the Preview and Post buttons. You will need to make sure that you select the HTML Formatted option from this menu. You can use the Preview button before you post to make sure your link comes out right. If you need any more tips to make it work, feel free to ask just about anyone here; folks around here are usually happy to help. Good luck, and thanks for dropping a link into the bucket!
Hey Indy, thanks for the HTML tip! I’ve been hesitating about trying to insert links in my comments cuz I just wasn’t sure how to do it, so appreciate your tip. I guess I just need to knuckle down and learn some HTML, since I’ve only used a designer program on my own website and avoided having to do real coding.
Great Sunday bucket too! One of my newly favorite features of BT lately.
Keep them coming, Indy. I’ve been too busy lately to help out – rushing like a madman to get to work in the mornings. Bird flu hits western Europe
Bird flu has reached western Europe for the first time, it was announced yesterday, as three new countries reported wild birds infected with the H5N1 strain.
Italy’s health minister, Francesco Storace, said that tests carried out on swans found dead in Sicily and the south of mainland Italy showed that the birds had the deadly variant, as did three migratory swans found dead at Thessaloniki, the Greek government confirmed.
Speaking after a press conference in Rome, Storace said: ‘Of the 17 dead swans, the majority [of deaths] were as a result of H5N1. But that does not mean all [were].’ He said he was awaiting further test results from a government-run laboratory in Padua.
Thanks for putting up the bucket this weekend! In case you missed it, when I started doing this, I invited anybody who’s interested to jump in and do it if it wasn’t up by 7:30 or 8AM ET.
The Shia bloc set to lead Iraq’s first full-term government has picked PM Ibrahim Jaafari as its candidate for prime minister in the new cabinet.
Mr Jaafari won by one vote over Vice-President Adel Abdel Mahdi.
Each was backed by two key factions in the United Iraqi Alliance, which fell just short of a majority in the poll.
Correspondents say the question for Mr Jaafari is if he can win the support of Sunni and Kurd politicians, who have been critical of his time in office.
His transitional government has been widely accused of poor performance and discrimination against Iraq’s Sunni Arabs.
The tiny South Pacific territory of Tokelau is voting on whether to become one of the world’s smallest self-governing states.
The 1,500 islanders are holding a referendum, which could reclaim Tokelau’s sovereignty for the first time in 120 years.
Tokelau – made up of three coral atolls which have no airport, roads or capital – has been governed by New Zealand.
Four UN observers have made the 28-hour trip. Votes will be collected by ship.
A massive amount of snow blanketed the city on Sunday, with lightning and gusting snow joined in a rare display above the city’s streets in what meteorologists said was the second biggest storm to hit the Big Apple since records started being kept in 1869.
By 10 a.m., 22.8 inches of snow had fallen in Central Park, second only to the 26.4 inches that fell in December 1947.
“This is one to remember,” said National Weather Service meteorologist John Cristantello.
The blizzard warning was to last until 4 p.m. The service warned that winds gusting between 40 and 50 mph could bring down trees and power lines, and temperatures were expected to fall as low as 23 degrees.
Strategists at the Pentagon are drawing up plans for devastating bombing raids backed by submarine-launched ballistic missile attacks against Iran’s nuclear sites as a “last resort” to block Teheran’s efforts to develop an atomic bomb.
Central Command and Strategic Command planners are identifying targets, assessing weapon-loads and working on logistics for an operation, the Sunday Telegraph has learnt.
They are reporting to the office of Donald Rumsfeld, the defence secretary, as America updates plans for action if the diplomatic offensive fails to thwart the Islamic republic’s nuclear bomb ambitions. Teheran claims that it is developing only a civilian energy programme.
“This is more than just the standard military contingency assessment,” said a senior Pentagon adviser. “This has taken on much greater urgency in recent months.”
The prospect of military action could put Washington at odds with Britain which fears that an attack would spark violence across the Middle East, reprisals in the West and may not cripple Teheran’s nuclear programme.

THE United States is helping Morocco to build a new interrogation and detention facility for Al-Qaeda suspects near its capital, Rabat, according to western intelligence sources.
The sources confirmed last week that building was under way at Ain Aouda, above a wooded gorge south of Rabat’s diplomatic district. Locals said they had often seen American vehicles with diplomatic plates in the area.
The construction of the new compound, run by the Direction de la Securité du Territoire (DST), the Moroccan secret police, adds to a substantial body of evidence that Morocco is one of America’s principal partners in the secret “rendition” programme in which the CIA flies prisoners to third countries for interrogation.
Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and other groups critical of the policy have compiled dossiers detailing the detention and apparent torture of radical Islamists at the DST’s current headquarters, at Temara, near Rabat…

No, but its on my list of places. Along with Egypt, Petra, parts of Turkey, and the south of Italy.
And didn’t you mean buff guys with dark curly hair?
Goddamit.
