Back in 2004, I was so proud when one of BooMan’s distant cousins won the Westminster Dog Show. The newf was named Josh, and he was related to BooMan on both sides of his family: the Pouch Coves and the Darbydales. Yesterday, another Pouch Cove/Darbydale newf won best in breed and will be competing for Best in Working Group and, hopefully, Best in Show tonight. Go newfs!!

We blog in the shadow of greatness! But bitch is a sex now?
Bitch is always the designation for a female dog. Nothing new about it. It’s also why it is insulting when applied to women…
Everyone knows that BOOmer, the dalmatian(!!!), is going to win the whole thing!
Personally, unless a Corgi takes the herding group, my money’s on the following three: 1) Rufus, colored bull terrier, 2) the pug and 3) Boomer, the dalmatian.
Now, having revealed my breed biases … I too was elated several years ago when Josh the Newfy won … such a magnificent dog is he. Booman, you’re lucky other Boo is from that bloodline!
A dalmation?????You all have lost it! Did you imprint on a “firehouse dog” in kindergarten??
Any animal bred for how far apart their spots are – and how many spots they have – is so likely to be several bricks shy of a full load!
I take only slight issue with your comment, Kidspeak … Dalmatians can come with “issues,” that’s for sure… for example, about 1 in 3 is born either partially or completely deaf. Like some larger dogs they are somewhat prone to hip dysplasia as well, but the ones I have known buck the stereotype and have been really sweet and smart dogs. BUT, so much depends on the human, as with any breed. The one that won group last night was a beautiful specimen, and clearly showed his happiness at having won.
Personally, I’m a corgi man due to having had one who was the best dog ever. Don’t have one now, and my fox terrier mix just turned 12 today and is still full of the proverbial piss and vinegar. Talk about smarts, a lot of the terriers have them in spades, and that’s one of the things that makes them “challenging” in the first few years. But when they mellow a bit, they’re just wonderful. Anyway, enough dog ranting or I’ll be here when the show starts! Cheers, friend.
I never intended to get a dalmatian, but I ended up with mine quite by accident through Dalmatian Rescue.
The same conventional wisdom that has brought us George W. Bush also says that dalmatians are screwed up and hyperactive. You should have learned by now not to believe everything you read or hear on television. My fellow (at age 2 1/2) is the smartest, sweetest, gentlest couch potato you’ve ever encountered (and with no health issues). So much for the conventional wisdom.
Go Boomer!!!
Ok, I apologize. I’m not relying on conventional wisdom, but on what’s worse: generalizing from a single case (the cardinal sin for a scientist). I confess I’m remembering my classmate in grad school who bred dalmatians, and whose wife was known to enhance certain “spot-prone” areas with black Clairol-type products! I think her dogs were smarter than she was. Unfortunately, that isn’t saying much for her or for the dogs!
I’ll go stand in the corner now for my sin.
Every time someone has applied it to me it has been because they didn’t like that I was Being in Total Control of Herself. Too fuckin bad for them, but I appreciate the compliment!
BooMan should come on down to DL when it gets warm enough to sit outside again.
MSNBC has as their breaking news line:
That doesn’t sound good for the victim. I haven’t found an article yet…
AP via WaPo:
Whittington had a “mild” heart attack because of birdshot that moved into his heart, but I’m sure he’ll be fine. At this rate, it’s only a matter of days before he’s “sort of” dead but still freely accepting blame for the mishap. This poor man is destined to become a vampire, much like Cheney himself.
I don’t believe he was ever in stable condition. I have never seen doctors go so far out of their way to minimize injuries and say how great the patient is doing. They aren’t believable actors in my opinion.
I agree with you.
I just KNEW this was far more serious… if it’d been superficial, a man as rich as he could go home, have a doctor/nurse visit him, and go to the doctor in Austin!
BIG SIGNS this was bad:
P.P.S. Dick Cheney has shot me in the heart too. It hurts … the pain never goes away, for some reason.
The ironies never cease.
WHEN oh WHEN will karma ever catch up with these thugs?
And the jokes about Orange. Anyone else think of GITMO orange?
That Dickwad bastard has so much GALL….seriously, where he gets off thinking he can just continue to duck and cover and to run this country (into the ground) from his secret, undisclosed foxhole in Wyomming (while Katrina victims are being evicted from motel rooms!)…..?
It is soooooooooooooo maddening.
End of rant.
And one other point: Whittington is going to stay in the hospital at least another week. My step-dad had a triple-bypass several years ago and they sent him home after 72 hours. A week in the hospital for anything these days is major.
I agree. You aren’t in a Intensive Care Unit for almost two days if you have minor injuries..and as you say the reports by doctors there were extremely vague type double talk I thought.
to the Westminster show. We see it as a harbinger of spring.
I was reading AmericaBlog, where John Aravosis makes the observation that the response to the shooting makes it clear that Bush and McClellan aren’t really in the loop of people who know what is going on. Part of the evidence for this is that Bush was informed Saturday that there was a shooting but wasn’t informed until Sunday that Cheney was the shooter rather than a witness or victim. Am I the only person who imagines Bush going to bed Saturday night dreaming that Cheney might be dead and he’ll finally get to be in charge of his own administration?
I remember when Charlie Rose interviewed that winning Newf. That was one cute doggie. Big. But cute.
That pictured pooch is one gorgeous dog, whether still or in action. Newf’s rock!
