A bipartisan group of Agriculture Commissioners from North Dakota, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and Massachusets met with officials of the federal Drug Enforcement Administration today, to determine if there might be a State regulatory scheme under which the DEA would sign off on production of Hemp as an agricultural commodity for fiber and oilseed.

According to a press release from North Dakota’s Roger Johnson, “We were told by DEA that growers, processors and importers of hemp seed would each have to be separately licensed, and that DEA would need to establish quotas for the production and processing of industrial hemp.”
Previously, DEA had declined to even meet with ND’s Johnson.
The move represents a shift for Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle, who, as Attorney General in 2001, had opposed a bipartisan move in the State Assembly to seek federal permits for a hemp research project to be conducted by the UW Ag School.
