A coalition of American churches criticized the U.S.-led Iraq War on Saturday at a meeting of The World Council of Churches in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

The churches involved in the WCC from the U.S. include the Episcopal Church, the Presbyterian Church, the United Methodist Church, Orthodox churches, and some Baptist denominations.

The churches apologized for “the violence, degradation and poverty [America] has sown.” In addition the 34 United States churches stated: “We lament with special anguish the war in Iraq, launched in deception and violating global norms of justice and human rights… We mourn all who have died or been injured in this war. We acknowledge with shame abuses carried out in our name.”

Now that American churches have ‘seen the light’ when it comes to the Iraq War we must all question: What next? Who next?

Pat Robertson?

…Maybe we’re stretching it.
