Sure is quiet here this morning.
Good morning everyone, great to see the coffee cart out.
Freezing cold here. About 16 deg and wind-chill down to zero.
Good morning. It’s 3° here but heading toward a heat wave of 24°.
Sorry it was so quiet in here. I opened the cafe and then headed off to begin my Sunday ritual — cruising all the book review pages on the online newspapers.
You are very thorough!
I’ve mostly read the sports pages of online papers from home. Our team hasn’t been doing too well, there is some disappointment.
We just hit 10° I think that high of 24 is going to happen a lot later in the day.
There was a book discussion on “Lies My Teacher Told Me” on Feb. 9th. JLongs stopped doing her week booklog awhile ago so there haven’t been any regular ones.
How’s this for a quick response? I was putting a second coat of paint on the boy’s room. The Dogs of Babel was a quick, enjoyable read, and made me want a dog.
My favorite books have been The Bean Trees and Pigs in Heaven by Barbara Kingsolver, Stones from the River and Floating in my Mother’s Palm by Ursula Hegi, and The Red Tent, by Anita Diament.
Mr. Nature is tired and has some um, digestive disturbance from being overseas, and for the fourth time in a row (must be some kind of record) they lost his luggage. Then Delta called at 1:30 AM to ask if we wanted them to deliver it right now or tomorrow (today)…at 1:30 AM!
Yeah, I wonder what the record is? United lost my sister’s luggage at least four times in a row when she used to travel to Europe on business. She finally figured out that it wasn’t making the connection from her Madison/Chicago flight to the overseas flight so she gave up and just started driving from Madison to Chicago. I feel for Mr. Nature.
Want to hear something depressing? My sister is a size 10 and she had a really hard time finding replacement clothes in Paris that fit her because she was too big.
The other times her luggage was lost she was in Finland. They have nice strong big boned women there and she had no problem. Although there is a limit to how many wool/sheepskin articles of clothing a gal needs in her wardrobe.
Those are my people – big boned, hearty, strong. I am mostly German with some Swedish thrown in just for the white hair and blue eyes. I am nothing if not sturdy.
I read the NYTimes book reviews on line. But I’m finding that I’m getting fewer and fewer book leads from it. Maybe they got a new editor? Or maybe people are just writing books I don’t want to read.
(or maybe its the guilt from the TBR pile in my bedroom)
They changed editors in the middle of last year and he changed the focus of the review. I used to subscribe to the review but I dropped it and just cruise by the online site for a few minutes. I like the Boston Globe, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the Washington Post much better.
Hopeful and Giddy are getting jealous over all this attention Sniff is getting. I’m having to guard the screen so they can’t see that he got yet another mention.
Of course, my dogs are all very good dogs who say that Jim should try being without sin before he goes casting stones.
Morning folks. 28 degrees here which is really cold for here. Anyone that likes Stephen King, he has a new book out called “Cell”. Not a monster book but a true horror of what technology could possibly do. I want say any more as I would hate to ruin it for anyone who reads it.
Even the thought of Stephen King gives me nightmares. I tried to read the Shining three times and could never get through it because it gave me nightmares. I’ve been scarred for life by The Stand.
He’s a great writer, but I just can’t do it to myself anymore.
No problem. I will do it. I will also list some of my other favorite books I have read lately and authors that I look for their stuff even if only on the sales table. LOL
California is up now, but since this cafe is fairly new, I will go pop back in bed to watch the Sunday news shows and will be back after that to attend to cafe needs. See you all in a bit.
Hi, I’m back, but the cafe is still empty, so I will wait awhile before posting anything else.
It’s a “ahem” chilly morning here, just 49 deg. and that is cold for us wimps here in socal. So I will be doing some warming up exercises before I get to work on decorating a new cafe.
Have a great day everyone, btw.
Hi, I just got back and brrrrrrr its cold out there. It’s supposed to break 20 today but its only 12. Although I see North Dakota is worse! I need to go to the recycling center but I am not venturing forth until it is at least … 18.
I’d rather hang with Sniff for a while than go out into the cold. Although I think the temperature has risen about 5 degrees in the last hour. woo hoo.
Migraine huh? I’m sorry. And I agree the cafe was too loud and bright for someone with a migraine to deal with — although I could have put you in the basement with the delivery guy if you really wanted.
NDD was going to fill in for George but he didn’t want to wear Andi’s frilly pink apron. So we missed George for his staff work and we missed you for conversation.
but since you said it was “too early for California”, I figured I wasn’t welcome… 😉
I overdid a bit yesterday, so packed the spouse off to church by himself, since he’s official chauffeur for mom-in-law till dad-in-law gets the okay to drive. Actually enjoying the peace and quiet, and will get to work shortly; got some organization tools yesterday so will actually work on getting organized. 🙂
Actually, first need to round up something to eat — we had an early dinner yesterday so I’m quite hungry…
Sure is quiet here this morning.

Sounds right for a Sunday morning.
Did you find anything interesting?
Well so far I’ve only done the Boston Globe, NYTBR, and the Chicago Tribune and have 12 more to go. 🙂
Most of the reviews I’ve read this morning were of books already on my TBR list — I like to get multiple points of view.
There was an interesting review of “BREAKING THE SPELL: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon” by Daniel C. Dennett in NYTBR.
You are very thorough!
I’ve mostly read the sports pages of online papers from home. Our team hasn’t been doing too well, there is some disappointment.
Actually, I’m an anal-retentive obsessive which happens to be pretty useful behavior for someone who is also an omnivorous reader.
I saw that one, but your comment means that now I have to go read the review.
I’ve been largely MIA for a while — any good book discussions here lately?
And, it’s 8 degrees here. No wonder the cats have abandoned the sun porch!
We just hit 10° I think that high of 24 is going to happen a lot later in the day.
There was a book discussion on “Lies My Teacher Told Me” on Feb. 9th. JLongs stopped doing her week booklog awhile ago so there haven’t been any regular ones.
Maybe I’ll use Saturday nap time next weekend as a time for people to give book suggestions.
I like getting suggestions — I write them down. Sometimes it takes me years to get to them, but eventually I do.
That’s a really good idea.
I keep lists of books to get from libraries, books to buy, and lists of what I’ve already read.
I agree. I am an avid reader and am always looking for new authors, topics or just entertainment to read.
Sniff, Giddy and Hopeful want you to read The Dogs of Babel.
I take it you liked it a lot. I read some reviews and thought about it but just never put it on my TBR list but based on your rec, I’ll add it.
I like both Kingsolver and Hegi. Have you read either of Kingsolver’s collections of essays? They are very good.
I read one of them…Something something in Tucson. She has a poetic, easy to read style.
High Tide in Tuscon. The other one is Small Wonder and it is just as good.
How’s mister Nature?
And more importantly are you sore all over from painting yesterday? That’s what always happens to me. I stretch muscles I forgot about.

That is really depressing. That thing about French women not being fat makes me want to slap them all.
I know!
The other times her luggage was lost she was in Finland. They have nice strong big boned women there and she had no problem. Although there is a limit to how many wool/sheepskin articles of clothing a gal needs in her wardrobe.

Glad to know I wasn’t imagining things.
Right now I’m reading the local paper — NASCAR day, gotta keep up with the local boy racer and the Daytona 500.
I also subscribe to the NPR book podcast that comes out each week. I’m catching up on them in the background right now.
Ah podcasts — the impossible dream of the broadband-impaired.
oops, I forgot.
This is for Sniff (he can share if he wants)
Colorful Lessons in ‘How to be a Good Dog’
Daniel Pinkwater’s dog LuLu liked it.
Hopeful and Giddy are getting jealous over all this attention Sniff is getting. I’m having to guard the screen so they can’t see that he got yet another mention.
Of course, my dogs are all very good dogs who say that Jim should try being without sin before he goes casting stones.
Tell them I love all dogs (even shih tzus Cabin Girl). I just love slacker dogs more.
The Diva Dogs don’t care as they know they rule supreme here at home. LOL

I have read every book he has written and had a few nightmares. LOL
I like scifi and fantasy but I don’t read horror — except for Shirley Jackson.
I love sci-fi and fantasy and they are my first choice but for some reason Stephen King has always been a favorite.
If you think about it, make a list of your favorite scifi and fantasy authors for maryb’s next saturday nap time cafe and I’ll make one, too.
No problem. I will do it. I will also list some of my other favorite books I have read lately and authors that I look for their stuff even if only on the sales table. LOL

Before my experience as a host yesterday I would have called you a slacker.
But now? Go back to bed. We’re comfortable here and don’t really want to move anyway.
take notes so you can share. LOL I am grabbing my cup and switcing to designer mode. I will be checking back later also.

::Slacker Sniff whispers:: recycling center — way too much trouble — all that effort when you could be joining me on this nice, comfy couch.
I’d rather hang with Sniff for a while than go out into the cold. Although I think the temperature has risen about 5 degrees in the last hour. woo hoo.
Yes, it looks like this is going to be a quiet Sunday afternoon.
Whenever you open your cafe, I’ll take care of closing this one.
What’s going on in the cafe today?
Hi there. Where have you and George been hiding?
You missed maryb’s stellar debut as cafe host yesterday and we all missed you.
I explained in maryb’s cafe. Sorry I missed it.
I’m sorry you weren’t feeling well. I hope you don’t get migraines too often and that when you do, George takes himself for walks and doesn’t bug you.
George knows when I have a migraine that no matter what he wants – he can forget it. Well almost anything.
Migraine huh? I’m sorry. And I agree the cafe was too loud and bright for someone with a migraine to deal with — although I could have put you in the basement with the delivery guy if you really wanted.
I thought maybe George was on strike.
George is always on strike except with food. I’m afraid to ask what happened in the basement with the dilivery guy.
Nothing 🙂
NDD was going to fill in for George but he didn’t want to wear Andi’s frilly pink apron. So we missed George for his staff work and we missed you for conversation.
Are you feeling better? Drained?
Thanks NDD, George would have been happy for that.
Yes I am feeling very drained. I just wanted to drop in and let ya’ll know I’m still here.
I going to go and try and sleep some more. I’ll see ya’ll tomorrow.
feel better soon. I know from personal experioence how bad migraines can be and how yucky you feel after one.
but since you said it was “too early for California”, I figured I wasn’t welcome… 😉

It was the limbo wasn’t it. I’m sorry, I just wanted you to join in the fun.
