Iraqi Shi’ites walk on the rubble of the damaged al-Hadi Shi’ite shrine, the Golden Mosque, in the town of Samarra, 100 km (62 miles) north of Baghdad February 22, 2006. A dawn bomb attack wrecked a major Shi’ite Muslim shrine in the Iraqi city of Samarra on Wednesday, sparking protests, some of them violent, and forcing an urgent government appeal to avoid sectarian reprisals.

A car bomb exploded Tuesday at an outdoor market in a Shiite area of southwestern Baghdad, killing 22 people and injuring 28, police said. It appeared to be the deadliest car bombing against civilians in the capital in weeks.

note: I generally don’t try to explain my choice of image or text, and I certainly don’t want to over-explain. Still, looking at RATM lyrics as static print on the page instead of hearing them at high volume and in full fury makes me think that some comment might help inform you regarding my choice of them today.
My decisions on what to include for pretty much every diary in this series are spontaneous, and based on my feelings and reactions at the time that I sit down to put them together. The relationship between image and text is never intended to be a literal one, as in “I’m using this poem to explain that picture,” or vice versa.
The links between the two are also as personal as they are incomplete and ephemeral, so whatever I see or feel is not intended to be the model or standard for however you choose to react.
The song was simply one of the first sounds I heard in my head when I learned of the bombing of the Shi’ite shrine in Samarra, and started looking at the wire service images of the damage and the angry crowds. That’s about as much of an explanation as I can offer.
I also can’t explain what the members of Rage – Zack De La Rocha (Vocals), Brad Wilk (Drums), Tom Morello (Guitars), and Tim Commerford (Bass) – had in mind when they wrote, recorded, or performed the song. This diary is just my experience of this event for this moment. Thanks.

Rub,
Today’s choice of Rage lyrics is perfect for me and I understand how the impact as seen written out on a page isn’t the same as hearing the full fury of the music. I’ve worn out several Rage cd’s myself.

Pandora’s Box Opened in Iraq:
Looking Backward, Forward, And Beyond
By Daniel Jordan and Neil Wollman
The fable of Pandora’s Box applies well to Iraq. War supporters wish us to judge the invasion and war on the removal of the brutal Saddam Hussein. A broad up-to-date analysis yields a disturbingly more negative assessment, with implications reaching far into the future.

The Reckoning The consequences of our misadventure in Iraq:
Channel 4 – UK Peter Oborne, political editor of the Spectator, reports on the West’s exit strategy for Iraq. He believes the invasion of Iraq is proving to be the greatest foreign policy failure since Munich. Oborne argues that the plan to transform Iraq into a unified liberal democracy, a beacon of hope in the Middle East, is pure fantasy.
Catch Film Premiere in City Near You
Below is a list of theaters and release dates in cities around the country for the stunning new film “Why We Fight.”
“Why We Fight,” the new film by Eugene Jarecki which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, is an unflinching look at the anatomy of the American war machine, weaving unforgettable personal stories with commentary by a “who’s who” of military and beltway insiders. Featuring John McCain, William Kristol, Chalmers Johnson, Gore Vidal, Richard Perle and others, `Why We Fight’ launches a bipartisan inquiry into the workings of the military industrial complex and the rise of the American Empire.
Inspired by Dwight Eisenhower’s legendary farewell speech (in which he coined the phrase “military industrial complex”), filmmaker Jarecki (“The Trials of Henry Kissinger”) surveys the scorched landscape of a half-century’s military adventures, asking how – and telling why – a nation of, by, and for the people has become the savings-and-loan of a system whose survival depends on a state of constant war.
The film moves beyond the headlines of various American military operations to the deeper questions of why – why does America fight? What are the forces – political, economic, ideological – that drive us to fight against an ever-changing enemy?
“Frank Capra made a series of films during World War II called `Why We Fight’ that explored America’s reasons for entering the war,” Jarecki notes. “Today, with our troops engaged in Iraq and elsewhere for reasons far less clear, I think it’s crucial to ask the questions: `Why are we doing what we are doing? What is it doing to others? And what is it doing to us?'”
