I’ve been thinking about putting together a mix called iBop with Nikki and Lauper’s I Bop, and Turning Japanese and a couple more tracks along those lines.
well you tried it just for once found it all right for kicks.
but now you found out that it’s a habit that sticks.
and you’re an orgasm addict.
sneaking in the back door with dirty magazines.
now your mother wants to know what’s all those stains on your jeans.
and you’re an orgasm addict.
you’re makin’ out with school kids, winos and heads of state.
you even made it with the lady who puts the little plastic bobins on the christmas cakes.
butchers’ assistants and bellhops, you’ve had them all here and there.
children of god and their joy-strings, international women with no body hair. ..
Imho, there’s a hell of a lot of music with lyrics that may not be so blatant, but with a pretty obvious subtext — all that stuff about ‘don’t need no one to love me, I can love me all by myelf’ (Big Bill Broonzy?).
I also seem to recall a collection of filthy old blues/r&b songs, released some years ago. I’m sure there’s lots of that stuff in there.
Not exactly a restricted pursuit, is it 😉
Sounds like your collection could be a real hoot.
I think they generally get shelved as Irish or Celtic or Folk and they do do some straight Irish traditional, but they also play a lot of stuff that’s going to make your average unwarned folkie’s hair stand on end.
Depends on whether you want to hear them relatively mellow or punking out. I prefer the stuff that falls in the middle. Ever since I shaved off my mohawk I’ve been getting mellower. I’m really fond of all three of the mid-range title here.

‘Relish’ is a great recording. Haven’t heard much of her music since.
I understand she’s got a place up here, but I don’t recall any local appearances.
I was listening to Relish the other day, and I was surprised by how much I still like that cd. I also have the album of covers that she put out a few years ago, and I love that too.
the package I’ve been waiting for was sitting down in the package room practically the whole month 🙁 — don’t know if they never put the notification in the mailbox or if the spouse overlooked it. So I’ve got my stuff now: new workout outfit, a couple of nice pants outfits to bring to the SoCal meetup, some short-sleeved sweaters…and so the spouse doesn’t feel totally left out, a pair of moccasins for him to wear in the evenings when he changes out of his uniform shoes. 🙂 I’ve definitely discovered the joys of Internet shopping… 🙂
is more applicable to my attitude towards supporting the Democrat Powers-That-Be, especially if they’re going to funnel the money toward Casey and other DINOs.
I have no hesitation towards spending money to upgrade my own wardrobe (half of which is falling apart) or to support candidates that I feel are truly progressive (have already sent some California green to Pennacchio, and will be sending support to whomever is going to take out Richard “Dick” Pombo here in California)…

Got to get some good travel speakers for the iPod — I’ll bring the tunes for the dance party at the SoCal meetup… 😉
I have a real fondness for the ‘Clock’ Symphony. When I was a kid, the school system in Indianapolis had a contest to help kids learn to learn about classical music called Music Memory. If you participated you learned to recognize specific pieces of music and also to understand the characteristics of classical music. If you did well enough in your school, you got to go to a city-wide competition where the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra played the pieces. I loved this competition and the Clock symphony was one of the pieces the first time I made a perfect score.
I’m contemplating quitting my job. I just can’t stand it anymore. I had a meeting with the boss and his boss yesterday, and they blamed me for everything, including not being able to adjust to a “chaotic and muddled” (their words!) organization. I’m an organized and disciplined person and they knew that when they hired me! How do they expect me to function in chaos? Anyway, “chaotic organization” is an oxymoron.
I’m just so depressed I can’t believe it. I’ve never been this depressed in my life before. I gave up a great job and left my family to come here. It’s not a fit and I want to ask them for a no-fault separation so I can go back home to Los Angeles, to my husband and son, and collect unemployment insurance while I look for another job. I want them to give me a decent recommendation and some support for moving my stuff back so this doesn’t destroy my family financially.
These people totally lied when they hired me. Initially I turned down the job, and they begged me to take it, reassuring me that all my concerns would be dealth with. One of my co-workers is totally psychotic and the boss coddles him like a favorite child. It’s a nightmare. I just don’t belong there.
I sent out 5 resumes to the LA area today. Please keep your fingers crossed!
That’s my hope. That I can negotiate a no-fault separation and show them the wisdom of taking some responsibility for the way the misrepresented the job to me.
I will wave my hands around and dance dances and say spells so that such a lawyer may magically appear before me! How does one from the far-from-rich-and-as-a-matter-of-fact-just-barely-surviving category find such a person? Any and all suggestions gratefully appreciated!
If your income level is low enough, you could try Legal Aid but I’m guessing it probably isn’t.
But a short consultation with an attorney might not be as expensive as you think. (For example, I have a cousin who does immigration law who does initial consults for a low flat fee.)
I’m assuming that since you haven’t been there that long you don’t know what options there might be. If you know someone who works in almost any social service agency, s/he might be able to give you some referral ideas. And anyone you know (and trust) who has been in the area a long time might have some ideas.
Call the local bar association and tell them what you are looking for. They should be able to recommend a few people. Then you have a couple of options. Most lawyers bill by the hour, in which case you find out what an hour would cost and you get as much advice as you can in that hour. If they recommend actions that would be costly, tell them that you can only afford to pay on a contingency basis –they take their fee out of what you get. If you get nothing they get nothing. If they tell you they don’t do it that way, see if they can refer you to someone else who does.
But I would start with just paying for an hour of time to find out your rights. Although your employer may have jerked you around, they may not have done anything illegal (and proving they induced you to come work for them fraudulently is too hard to prove). What you need in that case is good strategic legal counseling.
The other alternative, if you live near a law school, is to see if they have a clinic that helps people out with stuff like this. It’s good training for law students and they are supervised by “real” lawyers. I would only recommend this route if you really can’t pay anything for advice.
DISCLAIMER: I’m not a lawyer; the following are observations from experience working in California. If you really want to know, ask a lawyer well versed in employment law in California and Monterey County!
Employment contracts are pretty rare in California, owing to the nature of California employment law. The usual approach is that the employer puts an offer letter under your nose spelling out the basic terms of employment (salary, benefits programs, employer’s ability to change each arbitrarily and without recourse) and, most important from the employer’s point of view, a statement that you are entering into an “At will” employment arrangement, which either you or the employer can terminate at any time, subject to some notice provision. For protection against wrongful termination, improper treatment including sexual harassment, and such, the employee generally has to fall back on California employment law, which is relatively favorable to employees as such things go. Some employers try to sneak provisions into those letters designed to undermine those provisions of state law (trying to get you to waive some of those protections), but even if you’ve signed such a thing, a lawyer can help you decide whether a court would be likely to find the waivers unenforceable. Many times in California courts have found that the employees still enjoy the protections of state law in spite of signed waivers, because the employer used coercive means to get them to sign (like saying they won’t hire them if they don’t sign). So even if you don’t have an employment contract, legal advice is a good idea.
Employers often will negotiate payments in severance in exchange for a promise that you won’t sue later. The idea is that if the negotiations are in good faith, meaning that you understand what rights you’re giving up and agree that the compensation is fair, the employer may well expect the agreement to hold up.
But again, don’t rely on me, ask a real lawyer. I’m only trying to point out some reasons it might be worthwhile to do so.
Sounds pretty awful. The choice in these situations is always between pain now and more pain later. Here’s to you for doing what you need to do to make your life better. Hope everything works out soon.
Thanks, everyone, for your good wishes! Here’s another Point Lobos lunch photo, taken on Monday. Maybe if I was more evolved and sophisticated I could put up with the bullshit for the sake of the proximity to the overpowering beauty of nature.
So sorry to hear of the situation, mythmother. I truly hope you can take advantage of every form of redress that proves appropriate for you.
Imho, being ‘evolved and sophisticated’ means that we pursue the best situations for ourselves & our mental well-being — not stretching ourselves to sustain the unsustainable.
Thankfully, our world hasn’t yet been polluted & compromised to the extent that there isn’t some way to appreciate nature regardless of our surroundings — even in a small way.
Point Lobos is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever encountered, not that I’m all that well traveled. I literally stumbled upon it one night hitchhiking up Highway 1 in 1981. I needed a place to sleep, and I found some grass above the beach on top of the rocks.
I was woken in the morning by 2 Swiss tourists who had been crossing the continent. They fed me coffee and marijuana at 8 AM. I blissed out on the sand watching the waves come in so gently and lazily into the crescent-shaped bay.
Sorry to interupt the Friday evening fun but… today I got the first issue of Backyard Poultry magazine and it has an alarming article of interest to small-scale keepers of poultry like you are and I intend to be.
I’m sure you’ve heard of the USDA’s National Animal Identification System. Cows all over the country are already sporting colorful tags in their ears that contain microchips with Radio Frequency Identification Devices. I was surprised to read in one of Susan Hu’s diaries the other day that animal shelters are already putting these microchips into cats and dogs. Nothing to get upset about, right? With Mad Cow disease, it’s a good thing to be able to trace back any infected animal to its origin. And we’d all like to be able to find our pet cats and dogs if they get lost.
Well, by January, 2008, the USDA would like every person who owns even one horse, cow, pig, chicken, sheep, pigeon, etc., to be required to register themselves. As in mandatory. You must provide your name, address, phone number and the frigging GPS coordinates for your location. Oh okay, you say, that’s just filling out a form, no biggie. Right now they are suckering in people to do this voluntarily at state fairs, poultry shows and the like.
Now, comes the hammer: You will have to attach one of these RFID’s to every one of your chickens — at your expense. I don’t know how much they cost — yet — but if it’s only $10 that would be $250 extra for every minimum shipment from McMurray’s.
AND, you will have to report every time one of your chickens leaves or enters your property, loses a tag, goes missing, dies, or is given away — within 24 hours. Or else… they’re still working on the “nature of the enforcement” to ensure compliance, probably fines and/or seizure.
Wow, you say, how will Tyson be able to afford this? Well, of course, they won’t have to do it. They can have group ID’s for houses of broilers or layers that are raised and processed together.
Do you ever get the feeling that the government wants us to be dependant upon agri-business for ALL of our food?
There is a group forming to oppose this invasion of privacy called FARM for LIFE(TM)headed by a woman named Mary Zanoni. The magazine includes her phone and email address.
Sorry, I didn’t read the whole thread and just jumped in. Maybe you’ll refer her to the comment when you guys interact tomorrow. Or maybe… should I do a diary on this? I mean, what’s the point of IDing all the chicks and goats and pet piglets in the country? And connecting this to Susan’s found cat the other day: why are they putting these chips into dogs and cats that go out of animal shelters? It’s friggin’ spooky.
I can imagine them getting to the point where it’s a sales pitch like: Isn’t your child as valuable as your pet? If your child is ever kidnaped or lost in the woods, don’t you want us to be able to find him/her as soon as possible? So, a whole generation grows up with microchips in their arms and can be traced like dots on a big plasma screen everywhere they go… If they come together for a rave or a political meeting, the “unauthorized cluster” will emit a warning beep in Monitor Central HQ…
Well whattayaknow… lounge open and a real person serving !!!
An Irish Mist, please, Cabin Girl. Then I’d like a Bucket of News, and a cup of very very strong black coffee with sugar, if you will.

Thank you. What I really liked about it was the way the rock seemed to be suspended above everything. The ice was so thin, it was really surprising that the rock could be supported.
I might ad that sometimes MsNDD doesn’t find this endearing trait of mine so humorous.
OK more snow shoveling. Great cardiovascular exercise. Highly recommended. If such opportunties are lacking in your area come for a visit, as it appears spring is still a distant expectational memory.
jellyfish eh? Just the other day someone at the coffee shop was telling me about frozen snow snakes. Now I’ve lived here a spell, or two, and have yet to see one, but I ain’t rulin’ nothin’ out either.
I am exhausted!!! LOL The worse part is my damn boots hurt my feet cause I haven’t worn them in so long. It is like breaking in new boots all over again. LOL
I am a music freak and as you can tell I have some unusual taste in music. I love all music except Gansta rap and I am not really fond of heavey metal anymore. LOved it when I was a kid and stoned. LOL
Personally, I’ve never known a ‘metal-head’ who wasn’t also a stoner. Maybe it’s required 😉
In all honesty, I can appreciate rap (gangsta or otherwise) far more than I do metal, as an extension of an oral narrative/poetic tradition.
That said, I rarely listen to any music at all nowadays. It’s a quiet time. What’s happening right now in US hip-hop I don’t really know (as opposed to what was happening in the first decades of its emergence). I do know that the form has basically become worldwide, which is interesting.
I like rap. The violent rap songs which is what I mean by gangsta rap I can not handle. I have to have music in my life. I have been listening to music since I was a baby and actually took my first step trying to twist with my Mom when I was a baby. I love to dance and sing. At one time in high school, I was in 8 different choirs. I sang bass in 2, baritone in 2, and tenor in the others. If I go too long without music I become cranky LOL
I usually hate rap…but have you ever heard G. Love and Special Sauce? They are best described as “slacker rap”…it has that rhythm and cadence but the lyrics are laid back and sort of self-deprecating.

Thanks, yet again, for a lovely image!
Heaven.
That truly sounds fit for a goddess like yourself, my dear.
Mythmother’s photos of that particular part of the world are always a delicious treat.
Do you ever get the feeling that the government wants us to be dependant upon agri-business for ALL of our food?
Absolutely.
Just wanted to let you know that CG has gone to a concert and I’m not sure she’s planning to stop back by this evening.
I knew she’d want to read this so I sent her an email with a link to your comment so she should see it eventually.
It’s a really interested subject so it probably would make a good diary. As for doing this with kids, check out this article or this one .
thanks for the links, they’ll be distributed to the long list.
Well whattayaknow… lounge open and a real person serving !!!
An Irish Mist, please, Cabin Girl. Then I’d like a Bucket of News, and a cup of very very strong black coffee with sugar, if you will.

same meteorite just did a ricochet off you and wiped me out too.
(Sub-Freezing Edition)
Clue: this is not a secret surveillance photo of Ol’ Scattershot’s open chest cavity.
Bonus puzzle:
Above is a newly leaked photo of the entire Bush cadre, currently un-reclassified. The puzzle? Find Jack Abramoff.
Hmmm, it looks a bit like this:
Wow! Andi, that’s positively galactic!
Quite incredible.
I think yours are much better but I was did think there was a resemblance — mine are a skim of ice on a creek.
Ah, but yours has the ‘abstract’ feel & strong, musical compositional quality I really like.
Oy. Just scatch one or the other, please 🙂
Even as a jpeg, it’s fantastic.
Thank you. What I really liked about it was the way the rock seemed to be suspended above everything. The ice was so thin, it was really surprising that the rock could be supported.
Those are really gorgeous photos — so I really, really hope they aren’t pictures of your plumbing problems.
Close! Say, about eight feet 😉
To me they look sorta like jellyfish made from a kind of liquidy ice.
Yeah, these are photos where Ductape Fatwah’s low vision explanations wouldn’t be much different than what everybody else sees.
Hey I’m with Ductape Fatwah’s low vision explanations, only mine are low hearing explanations… I tell you, the things I hear people say some times…
(A few too many hours on the JohnDeere 4020 I’d reckon.)
Now I’ve lived here a spell, or two, and have yet to see one, but I ain’t rulin’ nothin’ out either.
however, I just came in from shoveling snow to see if I couldn’t get my fingers thawed out, and then here I am looking at more frozen H20.
Guess if I can type I must’ve warmed up enough to go back out and finish the project.
You have my blessings & sympathy, NDD.
Everyone who guessed is correct. You all win — & you ‘rose’ to the occasion beautifully.
And so, your prize:
Nice music to end the work week. I’ve never heard Shirley Bassey do Big Spender but that big voice of hers and that sound are a great match.
Speaking of the work week — I’ll bet you’re glad to see the weekend arrive.
oops — song not sound
I am exhausted!!! LOL The worse part is my damn boots hurt my feet cause I haven’t worn them in so long. It is like breaking in new boots all over again. LOL
That’s quite a lovely selection!
I’ve actually had ‘Kiss From A Rose’ drifting in & out of my mind for a few days now. Not quite sure why — but these things happen.
I have heard some but not much. I usually here it more when I am with some younger Dems I am playing mentor to.
Got no Random Ten…but do have a couple recs.
Shameless Self-Promotion
Later
Peace
Thanks for your recommendations — & also your invitation to the Jazz Jam.
I can definitely get behind the El’ Zabar recording. I’ve got ‘Love Outside Of Dreams’ here, which is truly stellar.
and opening a new cafe here.
