Shoot the Moon – Norah Jones
Pass It Down – Deep Banana Blackout
Love Blues – Keb Mo
How Did You Know – Willy Porter
Big River Blues – Jorma Kaukonen
The Only Living Boy in New York – Simon and Garfunkel
okay, that was 11…
CG, I had seen a comment in a thread, the identity of which escapes my sieve-like mind. I will post a diary regarding the east coast meetup which will hopefully bring it to resolution.
Cool…do you need me to remind you of what we were talking about? ๐
Light Out Of Darkness – Shirley Horn
Working On A Building – Cowboy Junkies
I’m On My Way – Take 6
Henry Martin – Joan Baez
Smalltown – Lou Reed & John Cale
These Days In An Open Book – Nanci Griffith
Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight – Karrin Allyson
One Night – Etta James
Night Ride Home – Joni Mitchell
Negative Girl – Steely Dan
Poor Simon and Garfunkel, they must feel really out of place on that list.
The week’s drink is hugely appealing looking. Looks like a wonderful drink for a July evening.
They are the perfect summer drink, IMO…
That particular Simon and Garfunkel is from the Garden State soundtrack, so I guess that makes it cool-er… ๐
Your list is excellent, as usual.
Tuff Enuff – The Fabulous Thunderbirds
Come Back Down – Toad the Wet Sprocket
Que Sera Sera – Doris Day
Blue Collar Man (Long Nights) – Styx
Tonight – Rick Springfield
Empty Spaces – Pink Floyd
Respect – Aretha Franklin
You Sexy Thing – Hot Chocolate
Forever in Blue Jeans – Neil Diamond
These Are The Days – Jamie Cullum
Somehow I hadn’t pictured you as the Doris Day type, Indy.
I don’t know about your mix cd but mine convinced me that Indy doesn’t have a type; I think she’s willing to take her music on a purely visceral level.
lol, you get me. I take almost everything on a purely visceral level.
I know — you only picture me naked but for socks.
::ducks and runs::
Every. Chance. I. Get.
Fabulous Thuderbirds and Doris Day. I love it!
We need to see your 10, growthrate!
I remember confusing the heck out of someone once by telling him I got all the news I need from the weather report (a direct quote from the S&G song). ๐
It’s supposed to be bad by tonight, and I’m headed out of town for the weekend. I should be packing now… but…
there was some very disturbing news in my local paper this morning. I certainly was not intending to do a diary today, but I felt compelled to do so. The whole thing was going to make me ill otherwise.
It’s really time that all this insanity comes to an end rather than increasing exponentially by the week.
Recommnedation: If you’re happy now and want to continue to enjoying day read it some other time. We’ve all got to take a break once in a while.
I’ll be on the road, and hopefully beat the snow to my destination, and then on 31.2K dialup over the weekend.
I’ll try to get some fun pictures of this BLISSART, as we Norskies call them>
Happy trails, as they say.
Thanks, I can hear Roy Rogers and Dale Evans singing it now!
I’m off!
Have a good weekend!
due to snow: Highway 17 (goes between 17 and Santa Cruz) — at the summit is just over 1000 feet. Not sure where the closure starts on each side, but evidently snow is falling heavily.
Weird weather…
goes between San Jose and Santa Cruz…would’ve been appropriate if the Doobie Brothers’ “Neal’s Fandango” had shown up on my Random 10…
Well, a travelin’ man’s affliction makes it hard to settle down
But I’m stuck here in the flatlands while my heart is homeward bound
Goin’ back, I’m too tired to roam, Loma Prieta my mountain home
On the hills above Santa Cruz, in the place where I spent my youth
Well it was Neal Cassady that started me to travelin’
All the stories that were told, I believed them every one
And it’s a windin’ road I’m on you understand
And no time to worry ’bout tomorrow when you’re followin’ the sun
Papa don’t you worry now and mama don’t you cry
Sweet woman don’t forsake me, I’ll be comin’ by and by
Goin’ back, I’m too tired to roam, Loma Prieta my mountain home
On the hills above Santa Cruz, in the place where I spent my youth
That is absolutely bizarre.
Saw snow this morning on the hills east of San Jose, over toward Livermore, too. In fact, I can just see it out my office window (and my office is in Menlo Park).
Every Friday night for the last couple of weeks KOZT in Fort Bragg has been reporting on wintry weather in Mendocino County in their leadin to the House of Blues Hour. I guess they’re probably going to do it again tonight.
Stay warm! (We had some weather up here in Seattle the other day but now it’s just cold.)
Even though it’s waaaay too early for Happy Hour around here…
Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now — Starship
Violin Concerto in A minor: Allegro Assai (comp. JS Bach) — Capella Istropolitana
I’m Into Something Good — Herman’s Hermits
Shiny Happy People — R.E.M.
Girls Ain’t Nothing but Trouble — DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince
Water Music Suite: Minuet (comp. Handel) — Academy of St. Martin in the Fields
Listen To What The Man Said — Paul McCartney
You’ve Got a Friend in Me — Randy Newman
Losing Hope — Jack Johnson
Take Five — Dave Brubeck
So how did Herman’s Hermits sneak in there?
“I’m Into Something Good” isn’t “Hey Jude” by any means, but it’s decently pop if you happen to like 60s pop, which I do. Even the bad stuff. (Hey, it’s like remembering when you were a kid. You tend to tune out most of the rotten stuff and remember the good times.)
I was a kid in the 60s so I’m allowed all my musical prejudices from that period.
I was too and we listened to a lot of pop, but I also remember a lot of soul music.
I was pretty lucky. The top 40 station in town stuck primarily to what was on the national top 40 and occasional local band (meaning from Seattle or Tacoma — nobody in my home town ever got that famous in music that I know of) but every so often a DJ would go off the resservation and play something like the full version of Phil Ochs’ “Small Circle Of Friends” (complete with the verse that begins “Smokin’ marijuana is more fun than drinkin’ beer”) or Eric Burdon and the Animals with all seven minutes of “Sky Pilot.” i credit KALE with helping me turn out the way I am. Or maybe that should be “blame.” Hard to say.
Cease and Desist – Delbert McClinton
Hot Rod Lincoln – Commander Cody
Oedipus Rex – Tom Lehrer (though today maybe we should substitute A Christmas Carol, given the weather around here)
The Major General’s Song – Gilbert & Sullivan
Cold – Annie Lennox
Choo Choo Ch’Boogie – either Asleep at the Wheel or Indigo Swing
Washboard Blues – Bix Beiderbecke (with Hoagy Carmichael on piano and vocals)
Romance without Finance (is a Nuisance) – Charlie Parker and Tiny Grimes
Money for Nothing – Dire Straits
Nuevo Boogaloo – The Iguanas
A wonderfully eclectic list. I like it — a lot.
Thanks. It isn’t random, but I do have them all in iTunes.
I live in Hoagy Carmichael land so you even get bonus points.
I’ve been a fan since the first time I saw To Have and Have Not. I was amazed when I realized he recorded so much with Bix Beiderbecke. I also like “In a Mist,” which is a piano solo on a Bix collection I have — it’s unmistakably Hoagy Carmichael.
For Hoagy Carmichael’s centennial birthday celebration in Bloomington, there was a wonderful Dave McKenna concert of Hoagy Carmichael music in Bloomington. Now I’ll admit to be a huge Dave McKenna fan but this concert was just gorgeous.
I heard “One Of The Fortunate Few” the other night on the House of Blues Hour, and found out later that Cease and Desist (the album) won a Blues Grammy. Good stuff.
At least I think it was Cease and Desist. Now I have to go look . . .
Doctor my Eyes…jackson browne
Teach your children…CS&N
A Kiss to Build a Dream on…Louis Armstrong
Harbor Lights…Bruce Hornsby
Theme from Thirtysomething…WG Snuggy Walden
Hollywood…Kasey Chambers
A Long December…Counting Crows
Glory Bound…Martin Sexton
Bach Cello Suite…Yo Yo Ma
The Wind…Cat Stevens
OK…it’s not a Random 10, but it’s gonna be random.
Here ya go, prepping for the radio gig, this is the stuff from the personal stash that’s going along:
Artist and Album title…cuts unknown, it’s extemporaneous programming…on the fly

put them in the jam]

As usual, a pretty mixed bag:
Global Griot (a local storytelling program) — broadcast of March 27, 2005
Earl Johnson & His Dixie Entertainers — John Henry Blues
Bookmiller Shannon — Buffalo Gals
Frank Blevins & his Tarheel Rattlers — Fly Around My Pretty Little Miss
Grateful Dead — Black Peter
Fleetwood Mac — I Don’t Want To Know
Wendy Carlos — J. S. Bach, Prelude and Fugue 2 in C minor
The Rascals — Heaven
The Monkees — Mary, Mary
The Platters — Baby, Baby
As I said last night all my music is old and I’m flipping through CD’s. I won’t even attempt to remember what’s on my albums.
Loggins & Messina – Watching the River Run
Dave Mason – World in Change
Mott the Hopple – All the young Dudes
Stevie Ray Vaughn – Tightrope
Van Halen – Mine all Mine
Steely Dan – Caves of Altamira
Jethro Tull – Aqualung
Bob Marley – No Woman No Cry
James Taylor – Home by Another Way
Eagles – Desperado – The entire CD.
Those are my not so random ten.
I used to think “Desperado” was the saddest song I knew. Finally got married at age 39, and don’t think so any more.
The whole album is for me in some ways, but it’s one that I listen to every song and not just a few.
When we were playing your concert game, I had Mott the Hoople for my least remembered concert.
I loved Jethro Tull back in the day.
Mott I like some of his songs, but Jethro Tull I still listen to. Like I said, most of my music is from back in the day.
I always leaned more toward folk and blues than rock (plus a big passion for the Drifters and the Temptations).
But I liked groups that used flute so I was very big on Traffic, Spirit, and Blues Project (which partially morphed into Sea Train) in addition to Jethro Tull.
My high school years was mostly pop and soul. After I went to college that opened up an entirely different realm of music.
My taste in music changes with age, but I’m trying not to get into the mindset of some of the people I know in thier 70’s & 80’s. The Big Band era is the only good music. Although I like a lot of that too.
Our era isn’t the only good music but it was certainly an era of some damn fine music that plays as well now as it did then.
5.Never Letting Go- Phoebe Snow
6.I Refuse To Be Lonely-Phyllis Hyman
7.Walk With me-Matt Alber
8.Only one Road- Billy Porter
How ya dong Refinish? I know 5 of your 10. I had Tapestry years ago, wish I still had it.
as you can tell by the titles I am in a reflective mood this evening. I am very big on female vocalist of all styles. Been a long week but today was a good day. Just have lots on my mind. LOL
I hope everyone is having a fabulous friday!!!
I think everybody has been reflective today. Not much commenting in the cafe at least.
Well, if you get a chance to hear any of the women on the list be sure to get their albums they are unbelievable. The two guys are from the Love Rocks cd that hrc.org sales. I plan to look for some of their other music.
I love Oleta Adams. I forgot about her. She sings that song something like “I don’t care how you get here just get here if you can”…she has such a strong, gutsy voice.
OMG yes and has a voice to melt the coldest heart.
It is called “Get Here”
Phoebe Snow’s voice literally blows me away.
I have seen Phoebe several times
One of my favorite cd’s is the New York Rock & Soul Revue which include Phoebe doing, among other things, a rendition of At Last that electrifies me all the way down to my toes.
One of my favorite cd’s is the New York Rock & Soul Revue which include Phoebe doing, among other things, a rendition of At Last that electrifies me all the way down to my toes.
I remember sneaking into my big sister’s room and listening to Tapestry over and over and over. I still know every word.
There is a Tribute cd to tapestry with various artist singing the songs that is out of this world.
Hi SN. I see you decided to de-lurk. I recognized I think 5 of your random 10 also.
I haven’t been lurking…I’ve been feeling crappy since this afternoon. Whopper headache and assorted other ailments. Plus, one of my sisters was supposed to be flying down tomorrow for a few days and she apparently has begun having severe panic attacks just in the past month and had a bad one today, so she doesn’t feel she can get on a plane. I’m bumming.
Sorry you are not feeling well. My heart goes out to your sister as I have been dealing with that for the last few months and know just how bad it can be.
She said her heart starts racing and she feels like she’s having a heart attack and then she can’t breathe. Her doctor said it sometimes happens with the onset of menopause.
I know there are anti-anxiety meds that can be prescribed. Maybe her doctor will try her on some of those.
She’s just like me, super sensitive to drugs. She tried to take something and threw it up. Hopefully it’s something that will go away as suddenly as it began.
I hope it does. She must be feeling terrible.
Her doctor sounds like a fucking quack!!!! tell het to see someone else and get some help.
I hadn’t heard of the connection either, but I googled it today and it’s apparently true in people who’ve never had panic attacks before. Something about wacky hormones. She’s not normally an anxious or depressed person.
But you still don’t tell someone they will go away. If one med didn’t work you get her something milder. Anxiety attacks can be dangerous in that they take away your ability to live a normal life.
If he thinks it is cause by a hormone imbalance then she should be on hormone treatment.
I never had anxiety attacks either untill late last year. They can happen at any age and on one knows who is going to get them.
Im sorry to hear that. I hope your headache is better. I guess I would be bumming also.
I’m sure my headache can’t hold a candle to the ones you get. But it’s my first bad one in a couple of weeks and nothing seems to be working for it. Just did ice packs and that helped a little until I removed them and now it hurts just as bad.
Did you read KB’s fathers method. I haven’t tried that yet, but next one I will.
I did read that and it’s funny, because I’ve done something similar with a bit of success. I put ice packs on my head while putting my feet in the bathtub filled with the hottest water I can stand. I read it in an natural remedies book.
Well most headaches are caused by the constriction of the blood vessels. The constricting causes interactions with the nerves somehow and causes the pain.
I think her father might be onto something. Get the heat and cold to your head and it might break the cycle.
I hate it when my dial-up connection crawls while you all are chatting away at lightning speed. There was something I was going to say about something but by the time I caught up with all the conversation, I no longer have a clue what is was.
Ah well. Sorry you have a head ache and about your sister’s panic attacks and I hope she shows up anyway and Tapestry is probably one of the finest albums ever.
LOL Andi. That pretty much covered it all.
You were going to say that since I mobilized the kids and got the house all clean for company, and now that company isn’t coming, that you would fly down instead.
No I was going to say that since your husband was gone and your sister wasn’t coming, you need to come to Brown County and party. That way you can have a good time and your house can stay clean (well, if you move the boys out to the garage while you’re gone).
Like having a party line when everyone else has a cell phone? LOL
Dream a Little Dream of Me is our family lullaby. Also pretty good tune for dancing West Coast Swing, if you can believe it.
Hi growthrate. I never thought of it as a lullaby, but I could see how it would be a good one.
West Coast Swing?
West Coast Swing: Not as fast-moving as Lindy Hop or East Coast Swing; wikipedia has a pretty good article
DReam a little dream is one of my all time favorite songs
I always liked Cass Elliot even when she was in the M & P.
Mindful that the 70’s were calling, looking for their music the last time I did this ;o)………
Alvin Youngblood Hart..Big Mama’s Door
Bad Company..Burnin’ Sky
Lynyrd Skynyrd..I Never Dreamed
Soundgarden..Burden In My Hand
Crowded House..Don’t Dream It’s Over
Frank Sinatra..Fly Me To The Moon
BookerT & The MG’s..Green Onions
Stone Temple Pilots..Vasoline..:o(..:o)
Smokey Robinson..Cruisin
Incubus..Wish You Were Here
Vasoline? Hmmm.
You will note the frown and then the smile after that song :o)
Which means what?…that you are ambivalent about vaseline?
Geez Sister!
Do I have to spell it out for you, or would you prefer a visual aid?!!
astroglide works better LOL
Easy now :o)
at least I didn’t mention other common items found in the household that were used in the 70’s. LOL
I thought Vasoline was a household item ;o)
It is but trust me there were others. LOL
Super you got SN & Refinish here and you’re talking about visual aids. Big mistake. ๐
Well, since Maryb isn’t around, I’m doing my part to bring the subject up ;o)
And a good job you’re doing.
Where is she, is she slacking today?
Well, DUH, I don’t need visual aides. I’m just wondering why the frown followed by the smile. To me this shows ambivalence. Refinish is right, astroglide is better. Plus, it sounds so space agey…like the Jetson’s would use it.
Once you get over the initial sadness of being alone and needing vasoline, things start to look up :o)
Now I get it. :0)
Hi Super. I know six out of your ten. I’m sitting here saying to myself – I’m not so damn old. ๐
Hey
Nah, you’re not so old. I’m just hesitant to put up too many older 70’s songs with Sister SN watching me.
If I am not mistaken the songs are from the 70’s ROTFLMAO!!!!!
This place is getting pretty bad. I’m going to go open a up the late night froggy bottom lounge.
It’s right over here.
