Amen to that. I really do hate the word tolerance. I just want equal rights and protection under the law.
Time to decide if we’re gonna make it to Memphis, ya’ll. Please check in at the new diary I just posted.
It looks as if Mrs Indianadem and I are going to be there too. We managed to book a room at the last minute when we found out we could get away. It will probably be Fri. evening before we arrive, as I think it’s an 8 or 9 hour drive from here in south central Indiana.
YAY! Look for another diary about the Memphis meetup soon. I am so glad you will be able to make it. I’m really looking forward to meeting you!
Us too! I was stationed at NAS Memphis at Millington way back in another life. Anyone remember James Meredith and Ole Miss?
That was the year I was born. I have lived with it as a ‘pre-memory’ memory all my life, though. It’s one of those things that happened so close to the time that I became a thinking and remembering child that I can imagine it vividly. I can almost put myself there, from the photos I’ve seen and the writings I have read. I’d love to hear your memories of those times.
I had no idea what was going on at the time. I was an innocent kid who grew up in a mainly white, rural Indiana community – the one I live in now.
I had just spent the summer being yelled at by authority figures at basic training at Great Lakes Naval Training Center and had been sent to Memphis to learn the care and feeding of jet fighters.
Some of the federal marshals involved with Meredith’s safety were housed at the base and were targets of local protests, including some rock and bottle tossing. The protesters left the sailors alone as far as I know.
Much later, as I developed some political awareness, I realized what a historical event it had been.
I do. My family had just moved from southeast Missouri to western Ky. In MO we got the Memphis TV stations which carried intensive (and highly biased) coverage of the Civil Rights actions in Mississippi, including Meredith’s integration of Old Miss. In KY we got things much more distilled. . .But as the lone Mississippi native in my family, and a kid, I was particularly interested. It seemed surreal that government officials, much less ordinary citizens, would bar any person from going to college at Old Miss or anywhere else.
IndianaDem, please check the comment downthread and follow it over to the latest diary on the Memphis meetup! Plaese let Brenda know when you’ll be arrving and get our contact info from her. I’m looking forward to meeting you and and Mrs. IndianaDem!
:O)
Thanks, blueneck. I’ll check it out. I’ve wasted the entire afternoon diagnosing the network here as to why everyone could access each others’ workstations, but not the server. It turned out to be Norton Systemworks. As soon as I removed it, everything was fine. Grrrrr – I’m really looking forward to a few days off!
Umm, I believe that’d be Norton System Quirks ? Right?
I’ve spent many an hour fighting such messes in my business life, too. Not just Norton, but lots of bad sw out there….and I know what you mean about needing a break. I’ve been taking a break from that type of work for a couple of years now 🙂
Anyway, glad you got it figured out. We’ll have some good fun this weekend, fer sure….
I’ll be in for some real database fun & games if I win my election in Nov. More about that when I see you in person – it’s a very involved story but I’ll try not to bore you with it too much!
Great! I’d love to hear about it. Though I’m not actively solving other people’s computer and network problems right now, I’m still a techno-geek and always interested in discussing/troubleshooting a tough problem. I’ve done a boatload of database programming in my day, so I’ll be quite an intent listener for you!
btw, Brenda Stewart is probably at work right now, so if you sent her an email, look for a reply tomorrow. I’ve given er my cell phone and she will also give you hers, I think. When do you think ya’ll will be arriving?
We’re hoping to be there by 6:00 pm. It’s about 8 – 9 hours from us here in south central Indiana. Guess I should clean the winter crud out of the car tonight. I’d rather be in the garden, but it’s getting dark now.
I will be there Friday about noonish or there abouts. I have the call till 0800hrs and then I will hit the road south. I am so glad I got this time off. Can you believe this that I had to plan on the trip for the time off when we first talked about this??!! I am really looking forward to this meet up! I think Knoxville progressive(Albert) will be coming the last I heard from him.
I will be so very glad to speak in person to each of you. I know, already, that we are gona have the greatest time. Hugs to you all….
The latest diary on the meetup is now up! please check that diary and let us know when you’ll be arriving and how to contact us for further info!

Let’s have a field day! Team Courage’s first major block walk will take place this Saturday, May 27. We’ll meet at 9:30 a.m. at the AFL-CIO building, 1106 Lavaca.
Description:
We will provide breakfast tacos and juice, along with maps and walk lists, and head out by 10:00 with a goal of distributing door hangers to 15,000 voters across the district in three hours. (Simultaneous block walks will be taking place in San Antonio and Hays County.) This one’s easy — no knocking or talking necessary! Bring a walking buddy, or we’ll help you find one. If you can’t complete your list on Saturday, but can commit to distributing all your door hangers sometime over the holiday weekend, we still want you! If you would like to participate in this important launch, please email our volunteer coordinator, Teri Sperry, at tsperry@courageforcongress.org.
