Can we have our President committed?
“I base a lot of my foreign policy decisions on some things that I think are true,” he said. “One, I believe there’s an Almighty. And, secondly, I believe one of the great gifts of the Almighty is the desire in everybody’s soul, regardless of what you look like or where you live, to be free.
“I believe liberty is universal. I believe people want to be free. And I know that democracies do not war with each other.”
…Bush said he’d sat in a California church on Sunday near a mother and stepfather grieving for their son who had been killed in Iraq. “I also want to let you know that before you commit troops that you must do everything that you can to solve the problem diplomatically,” he commented. “And I can look you in the eye and tell you I feel I tried to solve the problem diplomatically to the max and would have committed troops both in Afghanistan and Iraq, knowing what I know today.”
“To the max”?????
“The policy was set,” Drumheller says. “The war in Iraq was coming. And they were looking for intelligence to fit into the policy, to justify the policy.”
C reported on his recent talks in Washington. There was a perceptible shift in attitude. Military action was now seen as inevitable. Bush wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy. The NSC had no patience with the UN route, and no enthusiasm for publishing material on the Iraqi regime’s record.
“To the max”????
Of course that is not quite like going to a funeral.
Strange way to put it. Is he giving the audience instructions for being president or something?
Apart from the odd "to the max" thing this is a strange indirect way to put it. If he means to say that as a true fact why does he not just say it right out rather than saying it in a form that seems to be making a claim about how sincere he could be if he did say it? There is something very odd about this guy. He has big problems with death and with truth. And of course now they are America’s problems too.
with reality for sure. But he grew up that way. Insulated and coddled, he has no notion of what hard work really is. I really liked that song Pink’s “Dear Mr. President”. It really gets to the heart of the matter:

Now why didn’t President God Is My Co-pilot invoke his most favourite line: “Saddam threw out the inspectors”?
Up to a couple of weeks ago, that canard was still in play, but – apparently – not yesterday. Perhaps even he must have realised that it would have been poor form to recycle a truly blatant lie at that particular moment…I am giving this most insensate of modern presidents the benefit of the doubt, I know.
Can’t he be impeached on grounds of insanity?
Ever since you first posted about Drumheller this morning, I’ve been thinking about how badly our troops have been betrayed by their commander in chief.
I know the Iraqis were betrayed too. I don’t discount the death and destruction they have suffered.
But for this day, my attention is centered on the troops. By and large they are good patriots who believed they were leaving their homes, jobs, families, and perhaps their limbs and their lives to protect us all from the weapons of mass destruction. The criminal/madman callously manipulated their love of country for perverse reasons of his own.Their well-intentioned efforts and gargantuan sacrifices were made for no good reason and have left this country in greater jeaopardy than when it all started.
The Hague or Bellvue? I don’t care as long as he is gone and can do no further damage to our beloved land and its people.
25th. Amendment. Heaven forbid Cheney steps up, but he’s getting real close to going over the top.
His speech patterns and intonations have deteriorated markedly in the last few months; and that’s just my observation from listening to him. Can’t bear to watch.
Well, it was a thought.
I haven’t been able to listen to him or watch him for years. I turn away from TVs in airports or wherever when he comes on. Your intestinal fortitude is impressive, to have lasted this long.
Like the bumpersticker says, A village in Texas is missing its idiot.
Here is an idiot that has gotten by on Daddy’s extensive connections for his entire life. Unfortunately, we must all suffer because of Daddy’s extensive connections.
… that George was told that he would be the Decider early on. He didn’t need to worry about the details or the reports or the PDBs, he simply needed to decide between option A and option B, which his loyal staff would work out with Dick (Cheney) and present to him.
His first big choice — A) should we attack Iraq or B) should we let America be destroyed by Iraqi hydrogen bombs? — was difficult, but he talked to his Higher Father and felt pretty good about A. They then told him all the facts about A from all the reports he didn’t have to read, and he felt even better.
He’s not an idiot in the true sense, but he has this make-believe approach to his leadership that means he might as well be one.
I am just so disgusted by this whole, “I am God’s chosen warrior” routine. The parallels with the Crusades are sickening. The man should be shunned, locked up, disgraced and forced to live out his days knowing he will go down in history as the next Hitler.
what are the constitutional provisions for a president who has become “unstrung”?
i think he’s nuts
this one’s from december 2004
The Boss Has Gone Crazy
By URI AVNERY
When the fruit sellers at the Tel Aviv market shout “the boss has gone crazy!” they mean that they are selling their merchandise at ridiculously low prices.
In the world’s capitals, a similar cry is now being heard: “The boss has gone crazy!” but it is not about the price of tomatoes. It refers to the new situation, after the reelection of George W. Bush for four more years.
In many places, Bush is seen as a crazy cowboy, the kind who rides into town shooting in all directions. He has attacked Afghanistan. He has attacked Iraq. His neo-con handlers want to attack Syria and Iran in the next phase. They want to establish subservient regimes everywhere (“promoting democracy in the Middle East”), station permanent American garrisons in the region and control the world’s oil market, and – last but not least – help Ariel Sharon to fulfil his plans.
Now, in his second term of office, Bush can do pretty much as he pleases.
that was one year and four months ago… it is no longer the perception that Bush can do pretty much as he pleases…..
Good question…I think George should go to the Hague and the 32 percent that still approve of his performance plus the 8 percent who don’t know how he is doing, should all go to Bellevue.
Perfect solution! Only mental health services were cut, so, unfortunately we’re stuck w/the 40%! (Added quick.)
How about both?
“And I can look you in the eye and tell you I feel I tried to solve the problem diplomatically to the max and would have committed troops both in Afghanistan and Iraq, knowing what I know today.”
Thats why he refused to let the inspectors finish their work?
This man may have tendencies to be looked at as mentally ill; however, he has done some things that make him otherwise. Therefore, I consider him rational enough to stand trial at the hague. He is nothing short of a criminal and he must be dealt with as such. When he was governor, he did the same thing. I say do unto others as they do unto you…in this case anyhow. Maybe we ought to send him to one of those black op prisons…maybe we could send him to UBL. I am very sure they could figure out what to do with such a criminal. Maybe we ought to let the trial begin now instead of later when he is out of office. I know that I am dreaming, but it sure does my heart good to dram this wonderful dream.
