Jason Leopold says Fitzmas is coming next Friday. And it looks like the charges are going to be stiffer on Rove than they were with Libby.
Despite vehement denials by his attorney, who said this week that Karl Rove is neither a “target” nor in danger of being indicted in the CIA leak case, the special counsel leading the investigation has already written up charges against Rove, and a grand jury is expected to vote on whether to indict the Deputy White House Chief of Staff sometime next week, sources knowledgeable about the probe said Friday afternoon.
Luskin was informed via a target letter that Fitzgerald is prepared to charge Rove for perjury and lying to investigators during Rove’s appearances before the grand jury in 2004 and in interviews with investigators in 2003 when he was asked how and when he discovered that Valerie Plame Wilson worked for the CIA, and whether he shared that information with the media.
…In the event that an indictment is handed up by the grand jury it would be filed under seal. A press release would then be issued by Fitzgerald’s press office indicating that the special prosecutor will hold a news conference, likely on a Friday afternoon, sources close to the case said. The media would be given more than 24 hours notice of a press conference, sources added.
If Leopold has his facts right, I will feel pretty vindicated. Last week, my analysis was that Rove was planting spin that the issue was really about Viveca Novak’s testimony and that he might avoid charges if he could convince the grand jury of his version of the timeline. I said that he was being questioned over more serious matters, that he had no hope of avoiding charges of perjury and making false statements, and that his purpose for giving more testimony was to try stave off obstruction of justice charges.
It looks like my analysis was correct.
…meetings between Luskin and Fitzgerald which took place on several occasions a few weeks ago were called to discuss a timeframe to schedule a return to the grand jury by Rove to testify about, among other things, 250 pages of emails that resurfaced February 6 from Vice President Dick Cheney’s office and the Office of President Bush in which Rove wrote to former White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card about strategizing an attack against Wilson, sources familiar with the case said.
So, beyond discussing Viveca Novak, Fitzgerald wanted to discuss a failure to turn over emails and evidence within those emails that showed that Rove perjured himself when he testified about his role in the Wilson smear campaign.
The rescheduled grand jury appearance by Rove took place Wednesday afternoon and hinges on whether Rove’s testimony about the reasons he did not disclose the emails during his previous testimony will convince Fitzgerald not to add obstruction of justice to the list of charges he intends to file against Rove, sources said.
As of Friday afternoon, sources close to the case said, it appeared likely that charges of obstruction of justice would be added to the prepared list of charges.
This is really going to happen. Karl Rove is going to be arrested and charged with obstruction of justice, and multiple counts of perjury and making false statements. Most likely, it will happen next Friday. I am anxious to see what Cliff May, William Bennett, Bob Woodward, and all the rest of Cheney’s flacks have to say about that.
I pray Rove’s indictment will give the spinless ones the courage to set some limits on Bush’s ability to do more death, destruction and deficit-building.
but I’m not counting my frogs until they are marched. Too many timing disappointments already. And Fitzgerald is careful; it’s entirely possible it could take a couple of weeks depending on who the other targets of the investigation are (if any). And he could always string it out to, for instance, try to force Hadley in to cooperate.
But I hope you’re right.
I just hope hope hope hope that this time Rove goes down . . . completely down, down down . . . . and eventually found guilty of treason. I know this is just wishful thinking. He will slime away and come back and haunt us another day. The Republican party is not giving him up.
Everyday I think this is it! This is the big one that will bring down Bushco. I hope this time you are right Booman. First Libby, then Rove, then Bush and Cheney and all the rest of the fascists. It can come none too soon.
What do you think of this little gem?
????
it is quite interesting. I’m reluctant to read too much into it, though. I haven’t seen much evidence that Fitz is investigating a fraud on the American people.
Yes, I agree there is nothing out there to indicate Fitz is going after the whole deal, but I do think that this line of inquiry speaks to the question of motive.
Why was there a conspiracy to defuse Amb. Wilson’s statements? Because their entire scheme was a house of cards and every card had to stand? Why would they do such a thing to protect sixteen words? It seems to me as though Mr. Bush survived that revelation all by himself. I don’t think it really mattered to most Republicans at that point. But it will matter to some of them if Rove gets indicted for perjury and obstruction.
I’m confused, and I think a grand jury might be confused also. The whole thing stinks to high heaven if Rove and Libby are believed to be guilty. If I were on that G.J., even IF I didn’t know a lot of the backstory on this already, I’d be asking this type of question.
Booman, you’re OK.
Give this man a bottle of Sanscerre Reserve Speciale. And if Fitzmas arrives within the month of May, a Brouilly and Champagne to round out the party.
All winter we’ve been knitting a special orange jumpsuit. Size: Rove.
Our Sancerre kept chilled for that joyful, hell-breaking-loose of a day.
The Snow man will surely melt.
ill be in philly at shampoo partying with hundreds of hot latino lesbians and my favorite drag queens all celebrating cinco de mayo…..you should come with us booman and we can hopefully have a frog marching toast.
wow, that sounds like quite an event.
The best way to kill a snake is to cut off its head. To the extent that Rove can be considered Junior Caligula’s “brain”, we could soon witness a headless corpse maybe reduced to a few last reflexive involuntary movements.
This snake has lots of life, malice and venom left in it .. plus … this snake has lost touch with reality. We are entering dangerous times. Once the first veil drops … cutting through illusions is a perilous undertaking .. even for the best patients under psychiatric care.
Even if the media participated .. the American people are too far gone to benefit from group therapy. I feel some unhealthy behavior is about to be acted out.
I think your concern is real.
for more than just the damage to this misAdministration (as the spouse put it, “Bush is losing his Brain.”).
Supposedly, Rove stepped down from his policy role to work on strategies for the midterm elections (and there was a great letter in one of the local papers stating that Rove’s salary should be paid by the RNC, not the American taxpayer). If he is indicted, not only will he have to resign (can’t wait for the photo of him carrying out the cardboard box of his personal belongings, escorted by White House security), but he’s going to be too busy fighting his own legal battles to come up with any dirty tricks against the Democrats. And I don’t think Mehlman’s up to the challenge.
Of course, that assumes that he hasn’t already been spending time (on the taxpayer’s dime) figuring out ways to destroy our two-party system and put the Republicans more firmly in control…
Rollin’ Rollin’ Rollin’
Keep movin’, movin’, movin’,
Though they’re disapprovin’,
Keep them froggies movin’ Rawhide!
Don’t try to understand ’em,
Just indict and throw and grab ’em,
Come Fitzmas we’ll be living high and wide.
Boy my heart’s calculatin’
Some Justice will be waitin’, be waiting at the end of my ride.
Move ‘im on, head ‘im up,
Head ‘im up, move ‘im out,
Move ’em on, head ‘im out Rawhide!
Set ‘im out, ride ‘im in
Ride ‘im in, let ‘im out,
Cut ‘im out, ride ‘im in Rawhide.
