We write today on a matter of urgent importance, not only to the citizens of South Dakota, but to all Americans who value the United States Constitution, who respect the right to choose, and the health of every woman.
On March 6th of this year South Dakota’s conservative Governor, Mike Rounds, signed into law HB1215 – the most extreme anti-abortion legislation in the 33 years since Roe v. Wade became law. HB1215 bans all abortions in South Dakota – including those resulting from cases of rape and incest.
In fact, in South Dakota right now if you were a victim of rape and got pregnant as a result, not only would you have to carry the pregnancy to full term, but once the child was born, the rapist would have visiting rights!
Let the extremists know that this is unacceptable
For the people of South Dakota, and for the personal freedom and constitutional rights of every citizen in the United States, we cannot allow this to happen. To fight back we have launched an initiative to overturn HB1215 and send a message to Governor Rounds and other extremists nationally that this is not acceptable. But we need your help to wage a successful battle. As you read this activists are on the ground in South Dakota collecting the necessary 16,728 signatures by June 19th to block this law from going into effect. If the necessary signatures are obtained it will go on the ballot in November and leave it up to the people of South Dakota to overturn this egregious law.

Focus South Dakota is leading the effort to take HB1215 to the people and has played a critical role in founding and advising the coalition of state leaders, local activists and national organizations who have come together to defeat the law.
This is just one component of a multi-faceted effort to fight this outrageous assault on personal liberty and choice. Focus South Dakota is directly and aggressively challenging HB1215 by working to put it on the ballot this fall, and enabling the voters to send a strong, clear message to these extremists.
The people of South Dakota support our efforts. A recent poll, conducted by Robinson & Muenster, shows that 62% of South Dakota voters think the ban goes too far and almost 75% want to have the chance to vote on HB1215 this November. Republicans, Independents and Democrats statewide favor overturning the ban, and HB1215 is opposed in all geographic area of the state as well.
