In what may become a major bombshell, Rep. Murtha has issued a statement claiming it is true that U.S. Marines murdered 15 [or possibly 27 or more] innocent and unarmed Iraqi civilians in cold blood in Haditha last November. The murdered included seven women and three children.
The Marine Corps initially lied about it, claiming that the civilians were killed when a bomb went off. But the truth is that the soldiers massacred everyone in several houses, angered about a Marine that had previously been killed.
Stay tuned for more claims that Murtha, who served in the USMC for more than 30 years, is a “coward” and a “traitor.”
I’ve been waiting for ONE politician to talk about the war in terms of the suffering American troops have inflicted and not simply the suffering that they have endured. I mean, if our officials can’t even denounce an obscenity like Haditha, they might as well stamp a swastika on the flag.
I’m very proud of Murtha, even though I personally find his military background to be repellent. I guess the American military used to occasionally produce people for whom “honor” is not just an empty boast or an excuse.
The United States has killed tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians. The atrocity and injustice is immeasurable.
This massacre was fairly widely reported in March, but it sank like a stone. People don’t want to hear this.
This time, with Murtha putting his own authority behind it, maybe this truth will get some traction. Most people can’t comprehend “over 100,000 people killed.” But they get all upset when they think of a mother and child shot to death while huddling together in terror of American Marines.
A friend alerted me to this story several hours ago, and I’ve been maniacally tracking it over all the news sites. Drudge, to his credit, had it up almost immediately. Virtually all news sites and blogs are still not getting it.
Maybe this one sinks like a stone again. But I doubt it.
Arminius … It’s horrifying. I really don’t know what to say. I mean, a three year old girl! How much hate are you carrying around to do that to a baby?
It’s mental illness, PTSD, and it may create something that looks like hate to those of us who haven’t been in combat. I don’t know what it feels like, but I lost a loved one who suffered from PTSD from the time he was 27 (Vietnam), and I saw what combat did to him.
With the administration doing everything possible to hide the horrors of war, I hope people can finally begin to understand. War truly is hell.

I haven’t seen the press conference yet, but I hope to see it very late in reruns on C-SPAN tonight. I understand he said the number of civilians killed was higher than originally thought–27.
measures, and redouble precautions, to insure that western press reports military operations are first vetted by Pentagon personnel in order to avoid a repeat of this unfortunate security breach.
Although in fairness it must be pointed out that the crusaders are in Iraq to do a job, and reports from the theatre, from both US and non-US sources have consistently indicated that they are indeed doing that job.

(The Nation) April 12, 2006 — As the Los Angeles Times reported on Saturday, this much is known to be true: On November 19, after a roadside bomb killed Lance Cpl. Miguel Terrazas, 15 Iraqi civilians – including seven women and three children – were allegedly shot and killed by a unit of US Marines operating in Haditha, Iraq. Then, this past Friday, a battalion commander and two company commanders from the same unit were relieved of their duties.
US media coverage of the Haditha allegations has been startlingly limited. In addition to the Time investigation, AP reporter Bassem Mroue has followed the case and Knight-Ridder reporter Nancy A. Youssef has written an article as well. That’s it. Much has been written in the UK press and in English-language papers around the world.
