Well, as I said last night, you can blame me for Salad Fingers. As for Lost, I have no clue, because I must be one of the 10 people on earth who’ve never seen it.
But hey, a little spookiness now and then is good practice for Halloween.
Any cooler down your way tonight? Still 78 here last I checked.
I know that St. Louis muggy heat well. Not pretty. A bit muggy here, but it is nice to finally have consistent sun and warmth, despite the inevitable “H” word.
Do you remember a Twilight Zone episode where an evil professor (?) could kill people and then bring them back to life by rapping a certain sequence of knocks. But one time it didn’t work? Then months later the dead man’s fiance figures out that the knock sequence was wrong.
I had nightmares for weeks of the scenes of her banging the correct sequence on the crypt door and the man coming forth alive but with his flesh all rotten …
but it sounds great! My seminal fright episode was when I was about 3 or 4 and I saw the infamous Terror at 36,000 Feet episode with (I emote a lot) William Shatner.
The carpet monster on the wing terrified me so much I had nightmares for days. Forbidden after that to watch it again until I got older. Which of course made me want to watch it all that much more…
after the (original) movie The Haunting scared the crap out of me when I watched it on TV one summer. I was fairly young — under 10. To this day I just refuse to watch horror movies. I’ve missed many classic movies, but I just can’t do it.
And I turned into a horror fan, lol. But you’re right, that original The Haunting is always one of the movies I cite as damn scary. Usually haul it out around Halloween. But then, there are all sorts of other narrative elements in that film that make it transcend a mere “ghost story” label.
The strangest one I remember is the one with the “hillbillies” and their grandfather who had died, but refused to acknowledge it. Very bizarre as he would sit on the porch in his rocking chair and interact with them as they tried to convince him to ‘move on’…all the while decomposing.
The way it was scripted you didn’t know, as a viewer, that he was dead until the very end…very spooooooky, that one.
That one sounds vaguely familiar, but not sure if I ever saw it… What your description did make me think of though was the one with the old man and his hunting dog who ran off, and when the old man finally found the dog again, he realized he’d died and the dog guided him to heaven. Or some nice place of a non-denominational persuasion.
This was an original Twilight Zone screenplay by Earl Hamner
An old man and his dog were walking down this dirt
road with fences on both sides, they came to a gate
in the fence and looked in, it was nice – grassy,
woody areas, just what a ‘huntin’ dog and man would
like, but, it had a sign saying ‘no trespassing’ so
they walked on.
They came to a beautiful gate with a person in white
robes standing there. “Welcome to Heaven”
he said. The old man was happy and started in with his
dog following him.
The gatekeeper stopped him. “Dogs aren’t allowed,
I’m sorry but he can’t come with you.” “What
kind of Heaven won’t allow dogs? If He can’t come in,
then I will stay out with him. He’s been my faithful
companion all his life, I can’t desert him now.
” “Suit yourself, but I have to warn you,
the Devil’s on this road and he’ll try to sweet talk you
into his area, he’ll promise you anything, but, the dog can’t
go there either. If you won’t leave the dog, you’ll
spend Eternity on this road ” So the old man and
dog went on.
They came to a rundown fence with a gap in it, no gate,
just a hole. Another old man was inside. “Scuse me Sir,
my dog and I are getting mighty tired, mind if we come in
and sit in the shade for awhile?” “Of course, there’s
some cold water under that tree over there. Make yourselves
comfortable ” “You’re sure my dog can come in?
The man down the road said dogs weren’t allowed
anywhere.” “Would you come in if you had to leave
the dog?” ” No sir, that’s why I didn’t go to
Heaven, he said the dog couldn’t come in. We’ll be spending
Eternity on this road, and a glass of cold water and some
shade would be mighty fine right about now. But, I won’t
come in if my buddy here can’t come too,
and that’s final. ”
The man smiled a big smile and said “Welcome to Heaven.”
“You mean this is Heaven? Dogs ARE allowed? How come that
fellow down the road said they weren’t?” “That was the
Devil and he gets all the people who are willing to give up a life
long companion for a comfortable place to stay.
They soon find out their mistake, but, then it’s too late.
The dogs come here, the fickle people stay there.
GOD wouldn’t allow dogs to be banned from Heaven. After all,
HE created them to be man’s companions in life, why would he
separate them in death?”
Indeedily doodily. That’s why after all these years they are so worth watching again and again. Richard Matheson was always one of my favorite regular writers. He did many a classic episode.
The political ones are still chilling today, even though they’re grounded in the whole cold war Soviet zeitgeist. Ah, as the French say, plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose…
supposed to be a 3-day weekend, I’m hoping I can get stuff done so I don’t have to go in either Saturday or [sniff] Monday. If I end up getting the full break I’m contemplating a road trip to one of the fishing towns north of Rocky Point for some quiet beachside camping.
I often have that issue too. In actuality, I never have any scheduled days off, they’re always subject to the whim of clients. That even includes Saturday and Sunday. I usually end up doing at least some work every Saturday although fortunately these days I can work from home. So far though, 3 days looks clear for me. I hope it works for you.
I have a number of cousins coming in town, some of them with their kids. I haven’t seen them all at one time since Christmas. It will be fun.
Glad to know you’re home and more rested tonight. But American Idol? That’s another one of those I’ve never seen. My pop culture cred is down the toilet these days.
state of American pop culture, I’d say that your definitely not the thing that’s down the toilet, IVG. I’m rested, perhaps alittle too much, but I would’ve never made it through the workday today without the downtime last night. We are so short-staffed it’s starting to become ridicuous.
Sorry to hear that you still have that problem there, and I suppose there’s probably little hope that it will be taken care of anytime soon. After all, management today being what it is… well, I don’t have to finish that sentence, I think.
I may watch a lot of movies and tv, but never anything on the “networks.” I’m so uninformed on the newest hot show. Though Desperate Housewives sounds like something I might enjoy for a nice trashy wallow. I still miss Knots Landing hehehe.
recommended, I’m in Tucson so the Steve Nash reference caught my attention. Thanks for highlighting the charity work he does, it’s always good when celebs use their star power for the greater good.
Agreed. These days it’s just good to see a classy guy succeed, period.
There are so many pricks and assholes out there, whether you’re talking about celebrities, politicians or leaders in the private sector… it seems as though our culture has really internalized the belief that “nice guys finish last”.
This is the toxic result of the corrupt society we have built up where it seems the most ruthless and sleaziest people cheat their way to the top.
It’s nice to know you don’t HAVE to be an unprincipled jerk to make it in this world.
and they are, so some credence is probably wise…I’m having a grammer and spelling breakdown this PM…probably should call it a day and hide out in bed for the 8 – 10 hrs…wish I could sleep that that!
Those long naps can be disorienting. The night before my son’s recital I woke up in the middle of the night and thought it was the next night and that I had slept through his recital! It totally freaked me out and then I woke him up to ask him if I had missed it. Poor kid needed his sleep! And then he has to worry that his mother was losing her mind.
I know how that goes, I woke up around 2:30 totally freaked out that I had slept through my morning alarm. It took a few seconds to realize that 1) the light was not the sun but the living room lamp and 2) the horrible noise in my ears wasn’t a tortured cat but rather Rita Cosby on the tv. 🙂
Remind me to put my TV in “sleep mode” so I never have to wake up to the sound of Rita “bossy-the-cow” Cosby blathering away. (Thanks to IVG for the Bossy the Cow thing!) I’m at risk since I often fall asleep during KO. Not that I lose interest, he just coincides with my nap time!
Wow that is cool, and kinda creepy! This IS the Cyber-Twilight Zone. I love that world map! It showed the most recent visitor as someone from the Naval Oceans Center. And then you could click on what they visited and it was a page of starkravinglunaticradical with a diary that mentioned something about bombs in Iraq. But they were only there for 4 seconds, it seemed.
apparently it’s all accessible thru the Site Meter or some such…open to anyone who knows how to navigate it. Oui’s very savvy…s/he’s always coming up w/ stuff like that…I, for one, am glad s/he’s on our side!
Unhosted for obvious reasons…
just posted a comment, came back and the joint closed up on me! I sure hope Rod Serling doesn’t show up behind me.
in after-11 spooky cafes? What happened to “sweet” dreams.
Well, as I said last night, you can blame me for Salad Fingers. As for Lost, I have no clue, because I must be one of the 10 people on earth who’ve never seen it.

It’s still 79 but more important the humidity is 70%. So it’s hot and muggy. 🙁
I know that St. Louis muggy heat well. Not pretty. A bit muggy here, but it is nice to finally have consistent sun and warmth, despite the inevitable “H” word.

I never saw that one. The hillbilly theme reminds me of that X Files episode with the inbred family with all the deformities.
That one sounds vaguely familiar, but not sure if I ever saw it… What your description did make me think of though was the one with the old man and his hunting dog who ran off, and when the old man finally found the dog again, he realized he’d died and the dog guided him to heaven. Saw that a while back and it still makes me cry.
This was an original Twilight Zone screenplay by Earl Hamner
is this the one you’re thinking of, IVG?
A film version of that would make me cry.
did some very compelling and edgy stuff…especially given the political and social ‘climate’ of the time.
But still, figures it would make me cry since Earl Hamner wrote it. I may poo hoo his subject matter, but damn he can spin a tear jerker tale.
Oh and yeah, I had to watch The Waltons all the time when growing up.
nb … Nota Bene … Latin: Note Well
for Hallowen, <snort> Though it is the most festive holiday of the year at our house.
I’d love to stick around, but alas…
If anyone’s still up then, I’ll see you after!
I think someone needs to locate me, I’m tired of being lost.
Hey Manny, I thought maybe you took another 8 hour nap tonight?
I was glued to American Idol, I love seeing the cameos of veteran singers (Prince, Mary J Blige, Tony Brackston and others tonight, it was great).
I think my nap was more like 10 hours last night, but it was warranted. Trust me.
So was tonight the big night on Idol, did they pick a winner?
I didn’t watch at all this season until the past four/five episodes. My favorite didn’t win, but it was still worth scheduling my life around it.
And a three day weekend coming up? Got big plans?

So here’s a little late night humor for you.
And please go check out my 1st ever BT diary! I was inspired to write it after watching the thrilling Suns/Mavericks game. It’s good stuff.
I’ll be up for a little while longer to comment.
for a nap-substitute 😀
You should really go and read about Steve Nash, even if you’re not into sports.
He’s a righteous dude.

Have I come to the right place?
Did you have a good day?
Thanks for asking. Won’t bore you with the details, but glad it’s over and looking forward to a “better tomorrow.”
How about you?
Andi’s skinks were my highlight. 🙂
But, I mean, should we be worried? Skinks were the highlight…? True, they were pretty good skinks, but….
… there’s enough of us who consider it to be a highlight that we are definitely not in the minority. We should just embrace the skink-love. 🙂
involuntary snort at that one … too funny.
… seeing as I’ve got no Salad Finger Cafes up my sleeves. 🙂
I’m never gonna live that one down. Good thing I didn’t post any links to anything relating to my John Waters film obsession.
That’s right, O. Let’s keep it all in perspective!
Despite the title, we don’t tell people to “get lost”!
With my luck, I’d be the first!
How’s things on the lower left coast? If you tell me warm and muggy, I’ll yawn, cuz it’s that way here.
How does the garden grow?
Getting pretty hot, but not muggy on this part of the lower left. May be time to break out the portable AC pretty soon.
have arrived.
Greetings for the nether regions.
nether regions are warm and muggy I may have to lend some weight to the Twilight Zone reference of this cafe 🙂
and they are, so some credence is probably wise…I’m having a grammer and spelling breakdown this PM…probably should call it a day and hide out in bed for the 8 – 10 hrs…wish I could sleep that that!
the extended nap is doing nothing for my grammar, especially in the your you’re yer yur department.
Ten hours goes by fast when you’re unconscious 🙂
oh poor dada… do you need to spend some time in here?

ICU maybe…

at this: the horrible noise in my ears wasn’t a tortured cat but rather Rita Cosby on the tv.
And we call her Bossy the Cow! LOL… thx for the belly laugh my friend!
(And see how I give you credit! Nice a me, huh?)
Yeah, that’s my buddy MM… no “anonymous sources” from her! hehe… I noticed that and chuckled mightily.
AND I’ll schmooze for treats! LOL!
I’m sure of it … 🙂
It’s been a kind of fumble-fingers day for me too!
{{{{dada}}}}}
is it Friday tomorrow?
It will be in 55 minutes! But you will still have to go through Thursday. Sorry!
I’m over the hump…. . . . . . .

THESE GUYS amused…I mean, what a borrrrring job that must be, eh?
… so don’t try to amuse them too much. 😉
Interesting the page they came in on.
That’s what I was thinking too.
It was a lengthy but interesting read …
How’s it going NDD?
But just curious, how did Oui get that info? Can lurkers be “seen” lurking? Is this the Cyber-Twilight Zone?
Click on it and it brings up all the site visitors and their info.

and I also wonder how s/he does that as well. I should try to see what it says about me. Or do I want to know?
you?
sure looks like it.
We’re all in there … Mine’s pretty obvious.
I’m heading out early this fine Wednesday evening. I have a date with a couple of chapters of kansas’ book and my bed. Cya all mañana.
Happy reading! and…. Don’t let the BBs bite! See you in the morning light!
Night, Manny … sleep well and give Bud a pat or two for us. Our pups got Frosty Paws tonight due to the heat and they loved every lick of it!
paz a ti también
Ok, I’m back! That was some episode. Now I’ll catch up on the cafe. Is anyone still awake?
but not sure I’d call them “awake”
Hey, NDD! I guess I’ll put a fresh cafe up before I crash. This one’s getting pretty full.
I lead the LOST sheep over…
Here’s the new lounge for whoever’s still up.
