Oh and now I can finally say howdy to all the folks from previous lounge, thread of which I finally finished to see the time warp had kicked in….
That would be, MaryB, DJ, Manny, Boran, FM (in bed), Andi (probably in bed), GR, (who did I miss?)
after work, but it was still really muggy today, and the rain we were promised so loudly has never materialized. Which means I’ll be watering tomorrow night to make sure all those seeds stay nice and moist.
Culling books is never fun. And my library is so esoteric anyway, I could probably never do it. Someone’s gonna get a motherlode of French lit though at my estate sale, lol!
Thus the fact that very few would be interested in the hundreds of tomes I read and (mostly) cherished (well, except for the boring stuff).
If you have any rarities in the late 19th Century/early 20th, I might be interested. Then again, I might already have it, hehe. If you tell me you have a bunch of Villiers de l’Isle-Adam, I’ll pee my pants laughing. (I’m hoping this is a safe bet…)
Oh, I got the part about the soup earlier today… the rest I guess I missed. Probably just as well, as I can be a bit of a klutz myself sometimes. Crazy thing for me is that I can usually sense beforehand I’m going to do something like knock over a drink, and then by trying so hard not to do it, I end up fulfilling my own clumsiness.
I don’t know, I’m still reeling from that Gaelic thing you served. It went right to my Irish American head — why oh why didn’t doesn’t my French or German ancestry control my alcohol tolerance.
Manny, you’re really pulling out the exotic ones tonight huh? But that habanero martini… nuh uh. Nope.
Let me know if you find one called a “Mississippi Mule,” as I had a few of those a couple of years ago and they were good, though it sounded nasty from the description.
Oh and has anyone told you tonight that you’re the best damn virtual bartender, bar none? If not, I got ya covered on that one.
Thx so much Manny… I knew it had gin and lemon juice but was forgetting the third thing! Those are very tasty, and remind me of grapefruit juice somewhat. May have to make one of those on the next hot day…
I have absolutely no firm commitments for that at all, nor much else in that department! The advantage is, if I can plan in advance, I can request it off from work and make it work. If that’s the date that works for most, I’d love to start planning. (And putting aside $$ for the airfare, hotel and such.) Wonder if we could block book a decent hotel in advance and get us some sort of discount… Might be worth looking into! But Chicago is definitely do-able for me… a quick 45 min flight, L to downtown, etc. The only thing that will suck is I can’t expense it, lol.
I really like the Westin on Mich Ave, but it’s right across from the Hancock building and not cheap. Great restaurant and bar though. Hmm, the Marriott down there isn’t too bad either and I have LOTS of their points built up… may have to look into that.
I haven’t done a poll yet — it’s a little early to do one. But that’s the weekend that works best for me and Andi said she and Jim were good with early October. I just thought I’d informally poll some people and if enough said they had no conflicts I’d just pick it. So hold that date and I’ll let you know later.
I’m a decider, you know. π
I’m going to keep my eye out for some hotel specials but I’m sure they won’t come out for October until later this summer, maybe even into September.
I like deciders, when they’re in my corner! I’ll keep that date in mind, and late Sept, early Oct should be great weather still as well (if we’re lucky). The closer it gets to Halloween is always problematic around here, given that is the most decorated holiday at our house.
Btw, Open Invite to BooTribbers to the annual Halloween Spirit Raising Party at our house. This year it looks like it will be Sat., Oct. 28 … we always time it to coincide with the end of Daylight Savings Time, so there’s an extra hour of ghoulish goodness….
Now, that sounds like it’s right up my dark li’l alley, IVG.
Unfortunately, my spirit raisings tend to be hazardous to household ceramics — so it’s just as well I’m so phlegmatic.
and you can raise spirits vicariously from a safe distance. π
Last year we planned on doing some fireworks, but only pulled a few out … one called “Starry Night” that was not Van Gogh related, rather it has an amusing picture of a witch flying by the moon on it… And the obligatory blue Wizard’s hat as well… you know us boys and our proclivities toward pyrotechnics, lol.
Besides, being phlegmatic is a very serious condition from which I myself sometimes suffer. But that would be a ways for WW to get there. I can’t imagine how much flying ointment it would take to propel a broom from the Catskills to Chicago… oh, and the winds when you go to land?
If we do get it all together and this comes off, we’ll have to make sure to make a rowdy toast in WW’s honor! (Well at least I’ll get rowdy and do it, hehe.)
Please do, IVG! But be sure to warn me ahead of time, so’s I’ll avoid driving any heavy machinery.
Last time you raised a glass for me, I bypassed tipsy & went straight to messy.
travel package looked worth the investment, it included all the charcoals, tongs, carrying case, etc. Re: the airplane, I would hate to find out a negative answer, that would be a painful item to part with permanently at the metal detector.
A breeze driven poppy I managed to actually get in focus despite blown petal…
Damn. Just remembered I forgot to go cut peonies tonight before it got dark. Guess we’ll have to wait until tomorrow to perfume the house up with some…
Peony is up down below K’s comment. Are those the little bitty gold day lilies? I’ve been seeing those bloom and I think I might like to get some of those. As a rule we don’t mess with those much, and we’re still giving away the wild ones that came with our place. The more we dig em and give em away, the more they come back, sigh.
They are smaller — the first of the lilies to bloom and then done for the season. We have just a smallish plant which is in w/ all the other lilies (red, orange, coral, white/pink) so they are not overwhelming. I didn’t realize that there were wild ones!
You’re lucky you don’t have the wild, or “privet lilies” as they’re called around here, because they are very invasive though pretty. Apparently people used to plant them around their outhouses (FM would love this!) because that was the only thing that would do well there…
Thx, as always, MM. You know me and my flower pics. Love to share and hopefully make someone smile.
Soooo… I gathered some bits of scuttlebut about that other job possibility earlier? You’ll have to keep us posted on that, and with that, I will mention it no more.
I’m not sure what other job possibility? I start my new job tomorrow, its Director of Resource Development for a local non-profit agency that helps connect volunteers with volunteer opportunities. It’s only 10 miles from my home, a VERY short commute by LA standards, plus only 30 hours per week so I can actually have a life in the margins. So I hope I love the job and they love me!
What kind of poppy is that? It looks, um, well it looks interesting….
Did you get hold of some arnica? You should do both oral and topical to start with. Worse case scenario, it’s totally harmless and can’t hurt you. But I think you will see some pretty good effects from it. Acupuncture is also good, but make sure you get a recommendation from someone you trust!
I thought you had that other interview, and in my speed reading mode, must have concluded from yours and Andi’s comments that something had happened with that. So, in my best Emily Litella voice, I’ll just say Never mind!
It’s an Oriental perennial poppy, the variety of which we have long since forgotten, since it’s been there for about 7 years. They’re spectacular while they last, which is about 3-4 days if you’re lucky and there are no hard rains. But they’re faithful bloomers! There’s another red one gearing up soon, so you’ll probably see it eventually.
Haven’t had the chance to get any arnica yet. We’re a 1 vehicle family here, and once I get off work, if Chris has to work later (and he usually does) he just drops me off. 10 mile commute for LA is pretty great… I thought you initially said 10 minutes (which is what mine is, lol) which would be astounding by LA standards!
As for the acupuncture, if I go that route, I’ll go with C’s doctor who is both an MD and does herbalist and acupuncture as well. He comes very highly recommended by several people I know.
get your Nordic butt back down here and park it for a bit. There’s cold Old Style in the fridge and believe it or not, a bottle of Asahi I forgot I had. Take your pick.
I’m a big fan of wolf howls too (lol, see my email???) Though the occasional coyote is very cool too. We actually saw one here in town last winter … he had to have come from a ways as they are not normally seen in the city. Deer, yes. Hmm, maybe that’s why he was there…?
I saw a bear in my mom’s backyard a couple of winter’s ago. While it is a pretty suburban place, they apparently have been coming down from the surrounding hills to find food. It was both incredibly cool to see, and kinda sad at the same time.
though I’d love to see one up close again. I love and very much respect them (from a distance), and they have been squeezed out of so much of their habitat it’s sad. That’s the way the deer are up here… there’s so much development on the edges of the city that they are trapped in here. Often meeting unsavory ends on the roadways, alas.
It was cool to see the bear, but so sad that they are forced into foraging in the suburbs. I lived in upstate NY for most of my childhood and never even heard that bears were nearby, let alone coming into yards. Dear are a whole other story. There were lots of dear in the yards since we lived in a wooded area, squirrels and rabbits too. I miss having the wild life near by, but it must be getting really bad for them to have bears crusing the neighborhood.
I’ve got the good kind of feeling tired, spent the day mostly outdoors doing physical work. And had a 78F sunny day which sure beats the 91F and 31mph wind last Sunday.
Find any interesting enternainment over the weekend?
That is so cool. Back when I actually lived in San Francisco, I was only a block from the zoo. It was great waking up to the Siamangs and peacocks (and ocean surf).
That was great! Wow. The house across the street from me is up for sale. It’s ok. It does have two floors, 4 br, 2 ba (though small rooms), but it is not exactly one of the nicer homes on the street. It is selling for $800,000 (a couple of months ago it would have sold for $850,000 easy).
Thanks for the response and the e-mail update! I really appreciate it. I would love to tour that part of the country. One of these days, I will.
Thanks for resending it. After logging onto my email, I find I only have over 10,000 messages waiting for me (and that is not included in the 5,000 confirmed spam messages already taken out of my inbox automatically).
I really need to get a new email address. Mine is just way to easy to spam.
Hellooooo, anyone here, just stopped into say hi and take a puff off the hooka….hi everyone, I’m still around lurking, but too lazy to write much, spending lots of time with garden and sewing and decorating. I’m starting to feel like getting active politically as the election nears and the country goes to hell in the handbasket.
Hugs to all…
And a belated hey there to Diane! I’m too multi-tasked and distracted right now, lol! Hope you had a great weekend in the garden too… we were (and still are) very busy in the planting phase, but veggies are all in!!
Hi to all above who said hi, lol…garden is going through a transformation, all the flowers I had earlier have passed away, from heat or insects and I am on my third batch, I have decided to go for flowering plants rather than flowers per se and am having better success. I still have all my green plants tho and they are doing great and I’m taking a lot of cuttings and starting new plants which is gradually filling up my outdoor area, but I always say you can’t have too many plants.
Good that you can grow veggies, I have tried them before in containers and did not do very well with them, no space for a in ground garden.
Just in time!
The Little League Red Sox’ bats were stone cold today, and a little time sitting on top of a mushroom sounds pretty good right now.
Whooooo are youuuuuuu?
to ask?
Well, some people call me the space cowboy, some call me the gangster of love & some people call me Maurice.
How’s it goin out there in the woods tonight?
Oh and now I can finally say howdy to all the folks from previous lounge, thread of which I finally finished to see the time warp had kicked in….
That would be, MaryB, DJ, Manny, Boran, FM (in bed), Andi (probably in bed), GR, (who did I miss?)
Oh yeah, and the WW herself!
Hello to you, IVG. All’s well in the woods tonight, thank you. We’ve had an incredible thunderstorm this evening & we’ve cooled off nicely.
Currently faced with a problem regarding culling my books for the literacy volunteers bookstore. So many seem inappropriate.
How goes it by you? Been to your lovely garden today? Did you wear your hat?
after work, but it was still really muggy today, and the rain we were promised so loudly has never materialized. Which means I’ll be watering tomorrow night to make sure all those seeds stay nice and moist.
Culling books is never fun. And my library is so esoteric anyway, I could probably never do it. Someone’s gonna get a motherlode of French lit though at my estate sale, lol!
Gee, I’ve got quite a bit of that to dispose of here, too — in French, no less. My neighbors are generally disinterested.
Certainly hope you get your rain soon!
There’s a chance of rain here every day this week ’til Saturday. I’d be amazed if you don’t see some, too.
I’ll certainly check through, but I believe you’re safe for now.
I’d hate for wet pants to become a cafe’ theme again.
Must have been during my lurking time, when I never came in here … I think I’m glad I missed that, though.
T’was nothing distasteful. Poor Miss Olivia spilled things into her lap while at work, which inspired others to relate similar experiences.
Not a good talent to have, alas.
I’m that way about falling down.
I seem to be that way about getting up.
Do you speak for the pompatus of love?
Absolutely, growthrate — though I’ve yet to find out what it is.
What are the odds that would come up twice in one week on BT?
Wow! I’ve finally keyed into a zeitgeist!
the Blue Velvet to match the cushions
I don’t know, I’m still reeling from that Gaelic thing you served. It went right to my Irish American head — why oh why didn’t doesn’t my French or German ancestry control my alcohol tolerance.
On the other hand … ice cream …
would help pacify your resistance. I would be a scary real-life bartender, I would be experimenting during the entire shift.
Invite folks to act as guinea pigs on the house & you’d be incredibly popular.
π
like you’d make a lot of tip money. And management would love you because all these drinks use expensive brands π
Seconded! Absolutly.
I just know the difference between google and goggle (sometimes) π
Yep, Manny is the best froggy bottom bartender. We didn’t even have to have a mixing contest.
Courtesy of iDrink (no pic available, damn)
Just trying to broaden everyone’s horizons, of course!
Thx so much Manny… I knew it had gin and lemon juice but was forgetting the third thing! Those are very tasty, and remind me of grapefruit juice somewhat. May have to make one of those on the next hot day…
I’m thinking of the weekend of October 7 for the midwest meetup in Chicago — what’s that weekend like for you? Could you come?
I have absolutely no firm commitments for that at all, nor much else in that department! The advantage is, if I can plan in advance, I can request it off from work and make it work. the witching hour now is nigh
& so your wench bids all goodbye.
‘Til tomorrow, if we keep our power & phone.
Enjoy the night & thanks for the peaches.
Would you like some regalia with those peaches? If so, just holler… π
Night, and sleep well, WW. We bid you good night….
and you can raise spirits vicariously from a safe distance.
Sounds like a blast, IVG. I’ll definitely be with you .. in spirit.
:: cue moaning wind::
This is open to everyone BTW — anybody else think they could get to Chicago that weekend please chime on in.
I’ll chime on in to say I’d absolutely love to do it, but I reckon I won’t, being both extremely phlegmatic and broke.
π
I would love to have you come — but understand the limitations you’re working under.
What Mary said!
Besides, being phlegmatic is a very serious condition from which I myself sometimes suffer. But that would be a ways for WW to get there. I can’t imagine how much flying ointment it would take to propel a broom from the Catskills to Chicago… oh, and the winds when you go to land?

Thank you, maryb.
Apparently there’s a NE meetup in the works — unless I missed the latest memo — & I don’t believe I’ll get there, either.
Such a life I lead.
any chance of a exotic hookahs..being pictured?
http://www.southsmoke.com/cat_the_exotic.cfm
I’ve got my eyes set on the Abyss now. How’s the Tuesday going for you?
reading hookah 101 because I thought it was a substance
did you see the Japanese charcoal? I guess that site has everything down to the Hookah travel bag. I wonder if you can get a hookah on an airplane??
travel package looked worth the investment, it included all the charcoals, tongs, carrying case, etc. Re: the airplane, I would hate to find out a negative answer, that would be a painful item to part with permanently at the metal detector.
are you going to go to the mall later this year and ask Santa Claus for a hookah.
are we boring you kb?
or did you pass out from Manny’s experiments?
No that is what happens when you meet someone who graduated from MU.
I hope you’re dissin only the flagship school and not the whole University of Missouri system. Speaking as an UMSL grad myself.
I only talking about the “kitty kat” school in the middle of the state.
carry on then
I would rather know whether hookahs are legal in Missouri?
dunno
I was going to ask why wouldn’t they be? But then I remembered this was Missouri.
I think she just jumped the gun on the hookah lounge.
A breeze driven poppy I managed to actually get in focus despite blown petal…
Damn. Just remembered I forgot to go cut peonies tonight before it got dark. Guess we’ll have to wait until tomorrow to perfume the house up with some…
I’ve been thinking about changing my icon to either a peony or a poppy, but to dislodge Miss Pepa Queen of Everything might get me in trouble…
How’s hockey land tonight?
OH, forgot to ask, like those inner bits?
I did the firefox view image thing. π
Buffalo won in OT so on to game 7.
And what’s this … remove Pepa!? No … you musn’t … well, okay. I guess.
π
Isn’t firefox cool that way? I still owe Omir, Cali and Manny big time for their tips on getting it going.
Congrats(?) on the hockey?
I’m uploading a peony pic I think you’ll like a lot… also a view of finger rock now, as well as another campanula one.
I’ve got new blooms tonight too — I’m uploading to the b. Gold daylilies, the first of the season. π
Peony is up down below K’s comment. Are those the little bitty gold day lilies? I’ve been seeing those bloom and I think I might like to get some of those. No, I’m pretty sure these aren’t the same thing — at least they’re not invasive — the whole plant w/ leaves is about 2-3′ across.
Thx, as always, MM. You know me and my flower pics. Love to share and hopefully make someone smile.
Soooo… I gathered some bits of scuttlebut about that other job possibility earlier? You’ll have to keep us posted on that, and with that, I will mention it no more.

Good Old Emily. I really miss the early SNL days!
Thanks for the poppy info! Looking forward to seeing that red one. Are we the only late nighters around?
sorry for disappearing, the meds are kicking in for the night. I leave the lounge in worthy hands. Buenas noches a todos.
I hope you feel better tomorrow but not well enough to go to work π
Night, Manny! Thanks as always for being such a great host/bartender/raconteur!!
Take care and get some good sleep… I suspect this so-called “short” week will manage to drag on a bit too long, as they always do!
hasta la próxima!
I could use a hookah ’round about now.
but there blue tortilla chips, hummus, and hot sauce will have to suffice.
Now that I’ve checked in to the lounge, I’ll go back up and see what’s happening.
get your Nordic butt back down here and park it for a bit. There’s cold Old Style in the fridge and believe it or not, a bottle of Asahi I forgot I had. Take your pick.
Had a coyote howl just minutes ago, that’ll raise the hair on the back of your neck if it’s fairly close to the house, as this one was.
I love that sound. Actually I love wolf howls more.
How are ya tonight NDD?
I’m a big fan of wolf howls too (lol, see my email???) Though the occasional coyote is very cool too. We actually saw one here in town last winter … he had to have come from a ways as they are not normally seen in the city. Deer, yes. Hmm, maybe that’s why he was there…?

Sounds like you’ve had quite a productive group of days.
No entertainment over the weekend, just family picnics, etc. But the Opera festival season has started and I have tickets Thursday.
I’m moving over to the new cafe where it will load faster.
That is so cool. Back when I actually lived in San Francisco, I was only a block from the zoo. It was great waking up to the Siamangs and peacocks (and ocean surf).
Just popping in, late as usual. Hope everyone had a nice day and all.
Nice to see ya poppin in … care for a nice new peony?
My day was interminable, boring and very sleepy due to overdoing it yesterday in the gardening, grilled meat and beer department. π
Why thank you. It is lovely.
I had a tough one too, but now that I’ve had a chance to relax a bit, it is better. I think the best thing for one too many beers is another beer! ;>)
Did ya find my email from several days back with the link to my answer to your ND ?s
Darn, no. I so rarely check my email anymore since it is just overwhelmed by spam.
I’ll try and take a look for it though.
One of these days, I will.
here
this a probably a whole lot easier if I haven’t screwed up somehow.

Hugs right back at you Diane. I trust you had a pleasant weekend in your garden.
That sounds like a nice way to spend your time. π
Hi Diane, nice to see you stop by. Your flowers are so beautiful I can see why you’re spending time with them at this time of year.
Lounge is closing — all night diner now open.
