this diary is dedicated to all who suffer because of war and other disasters
we honor courage in all its forms – and pray for the courage to confront evil
we love and support our troops, just as we love and support the Iraqi people – without exception, or precondition, or judgement.

ATTENTION EDITORS – CAPTION ADDITION ADDING DATE OF BIRTH A citizenship identification card issued by the Iraqi government in 1993 shows Abeer Qasim Hamza al-Janabi with a date of birth of August 19, 1991, as translated from the identity card in this handout photo from her relatives in Baghdad July 9, 2006. Five U.S. soldiers were charged in a rape and multiple murder case that has outraged Iraqis, as documents obtained by Reuters on Sunday showed the rape victim was a minor aged just 14, and not over 20 as U.S. officials say.

Rape
by Sondra Upham
I wake to a knife
on the back of my neck,
a man’s voice low
in my ear. What I am told to do,
I do. Still
the moon lights my room.
The freight of his chest
fixes me to the rough, wood floor.
His breath
brags down my throat
into my lungs, and I pray
for my soul.
I make of my body a bunker:
when he enters,
he does not touch me.
I am clean as rain.

I Might Have Dreamed This
by Kirsten Dierking
For a short time after
the rape, I found I could
move things. Energy birds
swarmed from my brain.
With a witch’s sense
of abandoned physics,
I set dolls rolling.
Back and forth. Like a
breathing sound.
Using only my night-powered
eyes, I pushed the lamp
to the dresser’s edge.
I buried the mirrors
in avalanches of freshly
laundered underpants.
I never slept.
I did all these things
lying down.

While speaking at the YearlyKos 2006 Convention in Los Vegas, former Virginia Governor Mark Warner said (and I paraphrase from memory): “George Bush, incompetent idiot, blah blah blah, went to war in Iraq when the real threat is in Iran.” (my emphasis)
There was a brief pause after his statement, and I regret that I wasn’t brave or quick-witted enough to yell “Bullshit!” into the silence. But the moment passed, Warner picked up his next thread in perfect cadence, and I bit into my box lunch apple.
So now what?
I’m gonna let him know that I think his statement is bullshit, and why. I’m starting here. If anyone knows of other ways, please put them in this thread.
Thanks.
The candle that DianeL first lit many months ago, and which has become such an important part of these diaries since, is still available here.
You can copy that image into your own comment (you can leave it on my server), craft your own image, and/or rate this one – not for mojo, but to leave a small mark after taking this moment – as a sign that you know, but do not approve, and are not resigned.

And a Candle ‘Especially’ for the Child Abeer Qasim Hamza al-Janabi
This Country not only allowed the soldier, already widely reported to have a Mental Disorder, to serve in it’s Military, but Turned Around And Dumped Him Back Into The Society With An ‘Honorable’ Discharge!!
Can anyone imagine standing in an adjacent room while a child is being raped and doing NOTHING???? Is this LIBERTY? Is this SPREADING DEMOCRACY? Is this “rebuilding”??
We do not truly support our troops because look at what we’ve allowed them to become.
BRING THEM HOME NOW!
I see many signs from Pro-War, Pro-Lies, Pro-Bush supporters that say “Killing the enemy is not murder”… We here all the time the sad, whiney stories of how our troops just had to shoot at children because the children were, GASP, throwing rocks at their tanks.
So I guess now it’s okay to RAPE the enemy, too? Loot their museums. Burn them with napalm lite, beat their children, torture their family?
So when will we be buying, “Support the Troops – SOAP”?
So where the “Sanctity of Life and Family Values” punks now?? The old “better thier children than ours” is a terrorists viewpoint of the planet… or another example of American Exceptionalism lack of logic.
he’s full of shit.
But I tell you what I would become if ANYONE came into my home and repeatedly raped, then shot my beautiful Danni in the head and then burned her small, broken body as if it was litter.
I would be an “INSURGENT”.
(As she walked away from Elementary School 6/06)
I would kill… till I was killed.
I am with you DJ! Even if Danni is not mine I would do exactly as you are saying for her sake. I am with you 150000+%. The rage we all should be having now in America is just lying docile and why??!! I can never ever understand this in all my days. We really must get more involved with our statements of resentment over all of this death and rape and murder and just everything!
no words…
I bare witness to this unspeakable grief.
How the other soldiers stood by while this poor child was violated is beyond my comprehension.
Will the world ever forgive us? Can we forgive ourselves?
When will this madness end?
Reveal unto us the path of peace and justice to ensure our ability to love again
Still our hearts and bring light into our souls as we strive to truly love our neighbors as ourselves
Focus our minds to see the true nature of our beings and bring us to new understanding of what it is truly important
Raise within us a new will to continue pressing for real and lasting peace in a world full of hate and anger
thanks for sharing that, I will make it my prayer today.
for the Iraqi children. I am sorry but I need to go off here. I can no longer support the troops. Every service person over there, shit and at home should be outraged that this is happening. EVERY f’ing American should be screaming in the streets, “NOT IN MY NAME”. I am done.
God help us all, because we don’t seem to be able to do a damn thing for ourselves right now!
Rub, thank you so much for this, and for taking the time to share all the great links. (And thank you for every one of your powerful diaries.) I’ve bookmarked this for later reading of the linked material.
I’m speechless…and only have tears.
